What Did The Dutch Name New York

To establish the Dutch footprint in the New World, they planted a trading post on the southern tip of the island and called it New Amsterdam, after their capital city in the Netherlands.

New Amsterdam was established in 1625. The settlement reached from the southern tip of Manhattan to what today is Wall Street, generally believed to take its name from the wooden boundary the Dutch built to keep out Native Americans, from whom they took the land.

Tentative Agreement Would Help ‘turn The Page On New York City’s Long

Hydro-Québec has signed a tentative agreement to help power the state of New York over the next 25 years.

Premier François Legault said Monday the deal totals more than $20 billion. He called the agreement “huge news for the environment,” given that “fossil energy will be replaced by renewable energy.”

Legault has long tried to sell neighbouring provinces and the United States on the benefits of hydro power, billing Quebec as the “battery of North America.”

The agreement which still requires final approval in both jurisdictions would see Hydro-Québec export 10.4 terawatt-hours a year over the span of the deal.

It would require the construction of a 60-kilometre line on this side of the border. The Mohawks of Kahnawake would share in the ownership of the line.

Hydro-Québec said it hopes to start construction by early 2023.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Legault said that the deal is the biggest export agreement in the history of Quebec.

He said it will allow “more financial autonomy for Quebec” and help the state of New York wean itself from fossil fuels.

This Could Be The Fourth Variant To Hit The City In 2021

New York City has already weathered rising caseloads from three coronavirus variants this year. First there was a homegrown variant, called B.1.526 or Iota, which spread rapidly from January to March. That was followed this spring by the highly transmissible Alpha variant, first identified in Britain. Then by summer came the even more highly transmissible Delta variant, which caused a small wave of infections and then subsided in October before rising again in November.

Each new variant provoked worry. But so far, the coronavirus has been diminishing as a threat, after the devastating first wave last year. The long second wave that stretched from the autumn of 2020 to this spring saw far fewer infections and deaths than the first, even as several strains of Covid-19 spread.

The pattern of diminishing waves is different than what has been seen in much of the country and owes something to New York Citys relatively high rate of vaccination about 77 percent of residents of all ages have received at least one shot.

There are other factors: Considerable levels of natural immunity from the devastation of the first wave in spring 2020. A willingness to wear masks. Widely available testing and a robust public health apparatus.

But there was no easy way to carry goods back and forth from the growing agricultural hinterlands to the north and west until 1817, when work began on a 363-mile canal from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825. At last, New York City was the trading capital of the nation.

As the city grew, it made other infrastructural improvements. In 1811, the Commissioners Plan established an orderly grid of streets and avenues for the undeveloped parts of Manhattan north of Houston Street. In 1837, construction began on the Croton Aqueduct, which provided clean water for the citys growing population. Eight years after that, the city established its first municipal agency: the New York City Police Department.

Meanwhile, increasing number of immigrants, first from Germany and Ireland during the 1840s and 50s and then from Southern and Eastern Europe, changed the face of the city. They settled in distinct ethnic neighborhoods, started businesses, joined trade unions and political organizations and built churches and social clubs. For example, the predominantly Irish-American Democratic club known as Tammany Hall became the citys most powerful political machine by trading favors such as jobs, services and other kinds of aid for votes.

The FIPS county code is the five-digit Federal Information Processing Standard code which uniquely identifies counties and county equivalents in the United States. The three-digit number is unique to each individual county within a state, but to be unique within the entire United States, it must be prefixed by the state code. This means that, for example, while Albany County is 001, Addison County, Vermont, and Alachua County, Florida, are also 001. To uniquely identify Albany County, New York, one must use the state code of 36 plus the county code of 001 therefore, the unique nationwide identifier for Albany County, New York, is 36001. The links in the column FIPS County Code are to the Census Bureau’s “QuickFacts” page for that county.

Surveillance And Testing Systems Are Strong

As new forms of the virus began to emerge across the globe early this year, New York City began cobbling together its own surveillance system. Turning to universities, hospitals and other laboratories, the city set out to analyze at least 10 percent of coronavirus cases in New York for mutations.

The Pandemic Response Lab, a private start-up that opened last year, quickly became a big player in this effort. By early this year, it was sequencing examining genetic material for mutations hundreds of coronavirus cases each week, and offering insightsinto how different variants were circulating across the city.

‘welcome To Fear City’ The Inside Story Of New York’s Civil War 40 Years On

What to Wear in NYC by Month | Packing Guide for Each Season

Stay away from New York City if you possibly can was the stark warning that greeted visitors 40 summers ago courtesy of a mysterious survival guide that symbolises one of the weirdest, most turbulent periods in the citys history

Travellers arriving at New York Citys airports in June 1975 were greeted with possibly the strangest object ever handed out at the portal to a great city: pamphlets with a hooded deaths head on the cover, warning them, Until things change, stay away from New York City if you possibly can.

Welcome to Fear City read the stark headline on these pamphlets, which were subtitled A Survival Guide for Visitors to the City of New York. Inside was a list of nine guidelines that might allow you to get out of the city alive, and with your personal property intact.

The guidelines painted a nightmarish vision of New York one that made it sound barely a cut above Beirut, which then had just been engulfed in Lebanons civil war. Visitors were advised not to venture outside of midtown Manhattan, not to take the subways under any circumstances, and not to walk outside anywhere after six in the evening.

Those comments dont get broadcast outside New York, worried the bureaus president Charles Gillett, as he announced the dispatch of his goodwill ambassadors. But Fear City that went out to the whole world.

The city was saved for the time being.
