The homicide spike did not reach into affluent enclaves of Westchester or Long Island but the New York Post did, says New York magazines report.
This ignores a few issues. First, a good percentage of those voters commute into the city, avoiding the seriously mentally ill camped out in Penn Station or Grand Central. Or they may want to come into the city, to see a Broadway show, eat in a nice restaurant. At least they used to.
But most importantly, does that mean that they shouldnt worry for the condition of their state overall? It is black and Hispanic New York City residents who bear the brunt of the majority of crimes. Progressives say white suburbanites are racist to worry about crime, but wouldnt it be racist not to care about the victims?
Justice Thomas Was Not Where Mayer Says He Was
In every example Mayer cites in her article where Ginni Thomas is involved with a group advocating a public policy position or making a filing in the Supreme Court, Ginni Thomas is not a party nor has an interest that would be substantially affected by the outcome of a Supreme Court decision.
In one example, Mayer even falsely claims that Justice Thomas attended a luncheon, Impact Awards. Ginni Thomas emceed the event where awards were given to conservative leaders. Mayer writes that a guest at the luncheon, Jerry Johnson, who was then the president of the National Religious Broadcasters, later recalled that the Justice sat in front of him and was a happy warrior, pleased to be watching his wife running the show.
Mayers claim is 100 percent false. Justice Thomas was not at this Impact Award ceremony. In fact, he has never attended an Impact Award luncheon ceremony. I spoke with Johnson, and he told me Justice Thomas was not at this luncheon. Moreover, Johnson told me that neither Mayer nor anyone from the magazine ever attempted to contact him to ask him if he saw Justice Thomas at this event or made these statements.

Liberalism made the modern world, but the modern world is turning against it, an article in The Economist lamented last year, on the occasion of the magazines hundred-and-seventy-fifth anniversary. Europe and America are in the throes of a popular rebellion against liberal élites, who are seen as self-serving and unable, or unwilling, to solve the problems of ordinary people, even as authoritarian China is poised to become the worlds largest economy. For a publication that was founded to campaign for liberalism, all of this was profoundly worrying.
In terms of its influence, The Economist has long been a publication like no other. Within a decade of its founding, Marx was describing it as the organ of the aristocracy of finance. In 1895, Woodrow Wilson called it a sort of financial providence for businessmen on both sides of the Atlantic. For years, the magazine was proud of the exclusivity of its readership. Now it has nearly a million subscribers in North America , and seven hundred thousand in the rest of the world. Since the early nineties, it has served, alongside the Financial Times, as the suavely British-accented voice of globalization .

Eric Adams Is To Blame
When Democrats and the media arent blaming The Post, they are pointing the finger at Mayor Eric Adams, who put crime at the center of his campaign last year, thereby establishing a bipartisan consensus that New York was experiencing a crisis of public safety, New York magazine said.
Establishing. You mean recognizing exactly what was happening? Adams won the race because he understood the moment. And were heartened that this week he announced a plan to treat the homeless mentally ill, even if they must be forced into psychiatric beds to get better. Because letting a person who isnt in their right mind just live on the streets or in the subway is the opposite of compassion.
Democrats had a better-than-expected midterms nationally, holding onto the Senate and flipping some state legislatures.
They are sore because they lost the House by a slim margin, thanks largely to GOP gains in New York state.
But any analysis as to why must go beyond slogans and look at the substance. It wasnt the coverage of crime that lost the midterms, it was crime itself.
Stop blaming the messenger. Fix the problem.
View Of The World Cover
Saul Steinberg created 85 covers and 642 internal drawings and illustrations for the magazine. His most famous work is probably its March 29, 1976, cover, an illustration most often referred to as “View of the World from 9th Avenue“, sometimes referred to as “A Parochial New Yorker’s View of the World” or “A New Yorker’s View of the World”, which depicts a map of the world as seen by self-absorbed New Yorkers.
The illustration is split in two, with the bottom half of the image showing Manhattan‘s 9th Avenue, 10th Avenue, and the Hudson River , and the top half depicting the rest of the world. The rest of the United States is the size of the three New York City blocks and is drawn as a square, with a thin brown strip along the Hudson representing “Jersey”, the names of five cities and three states scattered among a few rocks for the United States beyond New Jersey. The Pacific Ocean, perhaps half again as wide as the Hudson, separates the United States from three flattened land masses labeled China, Japan and Russia.
The illustrationhumorously depicting New Yorkers’ self-image of their place in the world, or perhaps outsiders’ view of New Yorkers’ self-imageinspired many similar works, including the poster for the 1984 film Moscow on the Hudson that movie poster led to a lawsuit, Steinberg v. Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., 663 F. Supp. 706 , which held that Columbia Pictures violated the copyright that Steinberg held on his work.

How Do You Report On Bannons America
The New Yorker Festival is a moneymaking event. The publication brings in famous and/or interesting people, has them sit on panels with New Yorker journalists, and charges readers who are interested in attending. Several other major publications, including the Atlantic and Vox, host similar events.
These kinds of events are, by their very nature, difficult to manage. They need to be attractive to audiences, which means booking interesting and/or controversial speakers. The events need the speakers to show up, which often means paying them, and they might not want to walk into the lions den of an adversarial interview in front of a live audience.
At the same time, the interviews themselves cant betray the core journalistic mission of the publication they cant somehow do reporting and brand promotion at the same time. That means the journalists onstage shouldnt just suck up to the speakers and sing their praises though thats all too often what happens but rather should respectfully challenge their ideas and arguments.
This was the spirit in which the Bannon speech was arranged. Initially, the idea was to have Bannon on a podcast, but Remnick realized that a sit-down with Bannon would be an interesting addition to the festival. He openly advertised that he would be challenging the former White House senior strategist on stage.

In general, the regular audiences for most television and print news outlets tend to be older than the public as a whole. Yet there are some notable exceptions. As was the case two years ago, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show have the youngest audiences of the 24 news sources tested: 43% of Colberts regular audience is younger than 30, as is 39% of the Daily Shows regular viewers. Just 23% of the public is 18-to-29.
Regular readers of the New York Times also tend to be younger than average. Nearly a third of regular Times readers are younger than 30.
In contrast, political talk shows, particularly conservative talk programs, have older audiences. Large majorities of the regular viewers of Sean Hannity and The O Reilly Factor are 50 and older. Just 43% of all Americans are 50 and older. And while just 17% of the public is 65 and older, 42% of regular Hannity viewers and 40% of regular OReilly viewers are in that age category.
Liberal talk show audiences also skew older, but not as dramatically. Still, among regular Hardball watchers, 59% are 50 or older, and 28% are at least 65. Among regular Rachel Maddow viewers, 57% are 50 or older and 25% are at least 65.
Men dominate the regular audiences of the financial publications included in the survey: 73% of the regular readers of the Economist and Bloomberg Businessweek are men as are 71% of regular Wall Street Journal readers.

Liberal Democracy In Retreat
Democracys spread over the past few centuries has rarely been linear, instead ebbing and flowing with the competing forces of autocracy. Some political scientists divide democracys progression into three waves: the first beginning in the 19th century the second beginning in the aftermath of World War II and the third beginning in the mid-1970s, which crested with 42 liberal democracies, a record high, in 2012. Today, only 34 liberal democracies exist, down to the same number as in 1995, according to V-Dem.
As The Timess Amanda Taub has explained, this recent democratic decline which some scholars say constitutes a third wave of autocratization, the first having begun in the 1920s and the second in the 1960s has been primarily driven not by coups or revolutions, but by the actions of legitimately elected officials: Once in power, unscrupulous leaders can sometimes manipulate the political environment to their own benefit, making it more likely that they will be victorious in future contests. By winning those elections, they gain the stamp of democratic legitimacy even for actions that ultimately undermine democratic norms.
To varying degrees, the decline of liberal democratic norms and institutions is visible in almost every region:

Maybe not unheard of, but certainly more rare. There was a tremendous focus on improving the streets and subways under Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg and yes, even Bill de Blasio. Because despite his absentee mayoralty, he understood that none of his socialist pipe dreams were possible if people didnt feel safe. So he kept the proactive policing of Bill Bratton and his acolytes.
To the same point, the Times claimed that The Post Splash violent crimes across its front page, however rare they may still be.
But we dont run stories about random pickpockets on the front page there have been a number of recent crimes that have shocked the conscience. Here are some of the incidents that we covered in the past few months:
- A 61-year-old FDNY lieutenant, a 24-year veteran of the force on her way to lunch, was randomly stabbed to death in a frenzy by a madman.
- Eight innocent bystanders were shot in one month, including a 16-year-old girl and a 70-year-old grandma. All of them are black, many of them women.
- A Hispanic woman was brutally beaten, randomly, in a subway station by a homeless ex-con to the point where she might lose an eye. I dont give a st, said Waheed Foster, the man who did it, and who also beat his foster grandmother to death. So what?
- A shoplifter was arrested 101 times and let go almost every time because of bail reforms.
We believe that others have abdicated their responsibility to the public.
New Yorker Should Have Followed Economist And Stood By Its Invite To Bannon

I am no fan of Steve Bannon, his ideology or his dime-store philosophy. However, the nativist ideas Bannon and his ilk espouse have to be confronted and defeated by better, intellectually superior ideas. If the New Yorker was planning on subjecting Bannons views to serious scrutiny and rebuttalas opposed to giving him an open platform to offer his views uncheckedit could potentially be a productive exchange.
Unfortunately, by withdrawing his invitation, the New Yorker has unwittingly played directly into Bannons hands. He can now use the New Yorkers revocation of his invitation for his far-Right propaganda, bragging to the public that the liberal intelligentsia has no respect for freedom of speech or rigorous, intellectual debate. Frankly, from a public relations perspective, the magazine did not cover itself in glory. Having issued the invitation , the magazine should have followed the path chosen by the Economist, which also invited Bannon to speak at a similar gathering: to stand by its invite, guarantee robust questioning, and refuse to give into the echo chamber.
In other words, the New Yorker should not back down from a fight.

Now Back To The New York Piece
Freedlander wrote, sitting down with the mainstream press has come to be seen by Republican primary voters as consorting with the enemy, and approval by the enemy is the political kiss of death.
Politicians from both sides, but especially among the right, have always distrusted the media. But they also knew it was important to cooperate with the media. And if you had hopes to be a major player on the national scene, working with the media and agreeing to major profiles were a part of the game.
Maybe not anymore.
Freedlander wrote, No one I spoke to for this article thought the current situation was likely to change. The era of the political profile for Republicans, at least might be over.
Interestingly, the one who still might court the media is the one who helped spark the latest enemy of the people slam of the media: Donald Trump.

An Example Of Ignoring The Media
Freedlanders story goes along with an incident that happened last week in the state where I live Florida. The Republican Party of Florida held something called the Sunshine Summit. On Saturday, there was a dinner that included Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Sarasota Herald-Tribunes Zac Anderson reported that many media outlets were barred from the event.
Anderson wrote, Journalists working at Politico and Florida Politics said on Twitter Thursday that they also havent been able to get press credentials to cover the Summit. A New York Times reporter tweeted that the event is not going to be open media or livestreamed. A Miami Herald reporter tweeted about also being among the Sunshine rejects. Anderson also reported that among national publications, The Wall Street Journal was credentialed, but The New York Times and The Washington Post were not.
DeSantis spokesperson Christina Pushaw then mocked the media by tweeting, It has come to my attention that some liberal media activists are mad because they arent allowed into #SunshineSummit this weekend. My message to them is to try crying about it. Then go to kickboxing and have a margarita. And write the same hit piece you were gonna write anyway.
Her kickboxing and margarita line was in reference to something former White House press secretary Jen Psaki once said on The View when Republicans blocked a new voting rights bill filibuster.
