Victims Of Domestic Violence
N.Y. Election Law allows victims of domestic violence to apply for a confidential registration by delivering a sworn statement to their local county Board of Elections stating they are a victim of domestic violence and they wish to have their voter registration record kept confidential because of the threat of physical or emotional harm to themselves or a family or household member. Big news: Just last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signeda law that gives people back their right to register to vote as soon as theyre released from prison. That includes everyone still on parole or probation, even those convicted of a felony.

In 2018, Cuomo issued an executive order that granted the right to vote to most but not all people on parole through a partial pardon process. It was a little confusing, so the new law clears it up and makes the right permanent for anyone who has been formerly incarcerated.
To be clear, because there is a lot of confusion and misinformation about this: State law now says if you were incarcerated and now youre out, you have the right to register to vote.
When someone is released from prison, they do need to re-register to vote, even if they were a registered voter before they were incarcerated.

Primary Elections are held so that voters registered with a qualified political party may select their party’s nominees to the general election for partisan offices. Because a primary is a party election, only voters registered with one of the parties qualified to conduct a primary in New York City may vote in their party’s primary.

The rules about who is eligible to vote and in which primary can get a little confusing. New York is a closed primary state. This means that you can only vote in the party primary for which youre registered. Even though you can make the request right now to get an absentee ballot, you wont actually get your ballot in the mail until at least the last week of May. Thats because Board of Elections officials are still determining which candidates will be on the ballot, and they have a policy of not sending out ballots until 32 days before the election.
So, if you try to track your ballot online and it says pending, dont worry. It should be sent out next month.

The term party preference is now used in place of the term party affiliation. A candidate must indicate his or her preference or lack of preference for a qualified political party. If the candidate has a qualified political party preference that qualified political party will be indicated by the candidates name on the ballot. If a candidate does not have a qualified political party preference, Party Preference: None will be indicated by the candidates name on the ballot.
Similarly, voters who were previously known as decline-to-state voters are now known as having no party preference or known as NPP voters.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in New York were held November 6, 2018 to elect a U.S. Representative from each of New York’s 27 congressional districts. The elections coincided with the gubernatorial election, as well as an election to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. Contested primaries were held June 26, 2018. On Election Day, Democrats gained three New York House seats, and the Democratic Party retook control of the House of Representatives. Democrats won a total of 21 New York House seats, while Republicans won six.
To Vote In The June 22 Election You Have To Register With A Party
If you want to vote in the primary election next month, you need to register with a party. This is because New York has whats called a closed primary.
For example, to choose from the 13 Democratic candidates for mayor, you need to be registered as a Democrat. If youre not affiliated with a party or youre registered as an independent, you cant vote in the primaries.
According to city Campaign Finance Board officials, there were nearly 5 million registered voters in New York City as of March. Of those, about 3.3 million are registered Democrats and eligible to vote in the Democratic primaries. Just under 500,000 are registered Republicans in the city who may vote in Republican primaries. About a million voters are either registered with a third party or have no party affiliation, so they cant vote in the primary. If you want to vote , check your party.

New York Nixes Democratic Presidential Primary Due To Virus
ALBANY, N.Y. In an unprecedented move, New York has canceled its Democratic presidential primary that was scheduled for June 23 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Democratic members of the States Board of Elections voted Monday to nix the primary. New York will still hold its congressional and state-level primaries on June 23.
Commissioner Andrew Spano said he had pondered at length, reaching a decision just Monday morning. He said he worried about potentially forcing voters and poll workers to choose between their democratic duty and their health. While there will still be other offices on the ballot, Spano reasoned it made sense to give voters an opportunity to choose in contested races but not to have anyone on the ballot just for the purposes of issues at a convention.
New York Democratic Party chair Jay Jacobs has said that the cancellation of the states presidential primary would mean a lower expected turnout and a reduced need for polling places.
It just makes so much sense given the extraordinary nature of the challenge, Jacobs said last week.
Local election officials and voting groups have called on the state to use federal funds to purchase cleaning supplies and protective gear, and boost staff ahead of 2020 elections.
The decision to cancel a Democratic primary is left up to Democratic state election commissioners.
