Side Effects Risks And Safety Of The Abortion Pill

In addition to heavy bleeding, there are other side effects of the abortion pill to be aware of. Taking misoprostol can also result in a low-grade fever, chills and hot flashes, says Dr. Cahill. Our typical guidelines suggest seeking care if youre soaking through greater than two pads per hour for more than two hours, have a fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or are experiencing severe pain that cannot be managed with heat pads and over-the-counter pain medication, she explains.

While these side effects may be unpleasant, taking the abortion pill is considered low-risk and complications are rare. In one study published in Contraception, between .7% and 4% of people who had a medication abortion required transfusion, and no patient in that study required a hysterectomy or diedRaymond E, Grossman D, Mark A, Upadhyay U, Dean G, Creinin M, Coplon L, Perritt J, Atrio J, Taylor D, Gold M. . However, deaths and serious complications have occurred over the years, but they are incredibly rare and are typically related to Clostridium infections, which may also happen in miscarriage or term pregnancies.

When To Seek Medical Help

Medication abortion is over 95 percent successful and requires hospitalization for less than 0.4 percent of patients, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Reasons for contacting providers during a medication abortion could include the aforementioned heavier bleeding and larger clots. These symptoms could indicate the pills werent fully effective or another complicating health issue. If you are one of those 0.4 percent of patients who does need to go in for further medical assistance, there will be no physical evidence youve taken pills as long as theyve fully dissolved. You are now having a miscarriage everyone at the ER should treat you accordingly, so avoid mentioning abortion, and the pills, entirely.

Can Women Travel To Get Access To Abortion Pills

Yes, because people have the right to interstate travel. Women can travel to states where abortion is legal to get either medication abortion prescriptions or pursue surgical abortion, experts noted.

However, some experts believe that conservative states may seek to halt the ability of pregnant women to get abortion care out of state.

Yet traveling can add hundreds of dollars to the cost of seeking an abortion, which typically costs about $515 for a first-trimester abortion. That may mean traveling is an out-of-reach option for many low-income women, as well as for women who have children and can’t easily travel, as well as those who can’t take time off from work to make a trip.

One provider is trying to move closer to women in states that are banning abortion. Just the Pill, a provider of abortion pills in Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming, started a mobile clinic program that operates on state borders.

“Our mobile clinics can quickly adapt to the courts, state legislatures and the markets, going wherever the need is greatest,” Just the Pill said on Friday.

The future of your right to choose may be uncertain these days, but its monetary cost may be even more so. Try googling the price of an abortion, and youll get a confounding array of numbers that start at zero and spike well into the thousands. Major factors regarding how much an abortion costs include the state you live in, how far along the pregnancy is, and what type of procedure is available to you plus, the constantly shifting landscape of health-care policy. The cost is a bit of a black box, says Rachel Jones, a principal research scientist at the Guttmacher Institute, an organization that studies reproductive health policy. Nobody really knows what it costs to provide abortions. The numbers change from facility to facility within the same state or even the same city.

In general, it costs more to get an abortion in a hostile state than a supportive one. Still, about half of all abortions in the U.S. happen in areas where theyre hardest to come by. We shouldnt need data to prove this, but its there: Making abortions difficult to obtain does not stop women from going to great lengths to get them, just as making them more accessible does not increase their appeal.

In the hours after the Supreme Court released its decision overturning the legal right to abortion in the United States, nearly 100 requests for appointments flowed into Just the Pill, a nonprofit organization that arranges for patients to obtain abortion pills in several states.

That was about four times the usual daily number of appointment requests for the organization, and many came from patients in Texas and other states that quickly halted abortions after the court ruling.

Abortion pills, already used in more than half of recent abortions in the U.S., are becoming even more sought-after in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned, and they will likely be at the center of the legal battles that are expected to unfold as about half the states ban abortion and others take steps to increase access.

The method, known as medication abortion, is authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for use in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. It involves taking two different drugs, 24 to 48 hours apart, to stop the development of a pregnancy and then to cause contractions similar to a miscarriage to expel the fetus, a process that usually causes bleeding similar to a heavy period.

How The Pill Works

The abortion pill is about 97% effective at ending pregnancy though it’s most successful when taken at 49 days or earlier, according to a report by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, headache, dizziness, fevers and chills.

Women take one mifepristone pill orally and then four misoprostol pills one to two days later. The patient places two misoprostol pills between the cheek and gum on one side of the mouth and the other two pills on the other side of the mouth and waits for them to dissolve. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which allows the lining of the uterus to break down and prevents the pregnancy from continuing. Misoprostol causes contractions that empty the uterus, basically inducing a miscarriage.

Serious complications are rare but they can include an incomplete abortion, blood clots in the uterus, excessive bleeding, infection and allergic reactions, according to Planned Parenthood. In the event of an incomplete abortion, the tissue left in the uterus might need to be removed via surgery.

Women who take the abortion pill should have access to a phone and transportation to a medical facility in the event serious complications do occur, according to the National Abortion Federation. However, it’s unclear how much access women in banned states will have to that health care if they are one of the rare patients who has complications from the pill.

First A Review Of Some Basics

Pharmaceutical abortion, a.k.a. medication abortion, a.k.a. the Abortion Pill*, consists of two medicines. Mifepristone, a progesterone blocker, breaks down the uterine lining, ceasing the pregnancys progress . Misoprostol induces contractions . Expect diarrhea or nausea , and take your preferred over-the-counter pain med. Within the next four to 24 hours , you will in old-school, blue-liquid-in-the-maxi-pad-ad parlance pass the products of conception. Bluntly, youll cramp and then bleed. Maybe a little less than you expect, maybe quite a bit more. There will be clots, probably, depending on the timing of your pregnancy and your own body. If ongoing clots are larger than a golf ball, call your doctor or health-care practitioner. You will likely have a heavy periodlike flow afterward for a week or two.

The New York City Council approved a sweeping set of measures Thursday to expand access to abortion in the Big Apple, including requiring city-run clinics to stock medications that can end a pregnancy.

It passed by a vote of 41-7 and would also require the city Health Department to be able to provide counseling and referrals to other family planning clinics if needed for other services.

New York City has always been a leader in protecting reproductive health and rights, said the measures prime sponsor, Councilwoman Carlina Rivera , who is running to represent a district that spans her district and a large swath of Brooklyn in the US Congress.

The no votes were cast by Council members Joann Ariola , Joe Borelli , David Carr , Bob Holden , Vickie Paladino , Inna Vernikov and Kalman Yeger .

The suite of measures was approved just weeks after the US Supreme Court stunned the nation by formally striking down its own landmark 1970s ruling that legalized abortion, leaving each state in charge of setting its own rules.

How Abortion Pills Work

Theyre the same in terms of actual dosages and medications they differ in who provides your pills and where you will take your initial dose, whether in a clinical setting or at home in short, if a clinician is involved at some point in the process. Either way, experts say, the steps are the same and the process is equally safe and effective, as long as you have accurate instructions. And patients, whether clinician-supported or self-managed, can always call Planned Parenthood for advice, even if they didnt prescribe your pills, says Dr. Paula Bednarek ofthe Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine.

How Is The Abortion Pill Different From Plan B

Experts emphasize that the abortion pill is completely different from the over-the-counter emergency contraception medication Plan B, and they serve entirely different purposes. While the abortion pill is used to end an existing pregnancy, Plan B is a brand of emergency contraception designed to be used within 72 hours of unprotected sex, preventing pregnancy from taking place, explains Dr. Roskin.

If someone is already pregnant, taking Plan B will not work in terms of ending the pregnancy, says Dr. White. Plan B is progesterone, and taking a lot of progesterone will actually help support the pregnancy, she says.

What About Ordering Abortion Pills From Overseas

That may be one of the lowest-risk and easiest options, experts say.

Providers like Aid Access, a European telemedicine service that prescribes abortion pills to women in the U.S., has already seen an “enormous increase” in Americans looking to obtain the medications. The surge came in the wake of the leaked draft opinion that this month overturned Roe v. Wade.

“So I would say, buckle up, women in the U.S. Just get your abortion pills in your medicine cabinet, so you have it in case you need it,” Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, who runs Aid Access, told CBS News last month.

The process with Aid Access works via an online consultation, with the service then connecting the patient with a U.S.-based health care provider who can prescribe the pills. If they face restrictions within their home state, women may be connected with Gomperts herself, who can issue a prescription online and recommend an online pharmacy outside the U.S. to fill it. The medication requires about 10 to 20 days to arrive.

“We expect to see more people ordering from Aid Access,” noted Allen.

But, she added, there is still some risk in doing this. “If a law enforcement official had reason to believe someone was doing an illegal abortion, they could go after someone ordering the pills,” she said.

In 2017, a Mississippi woman named Latice Fisher was indicted for second-degree murder after she suffered a still birth 36 weeks into her pregnancy the charge was later dismissed.
