The Yankees finished the regular season 92-70 and in 2nd place in the American League East, and the story is exactly the same for the Red Sox. The only thing giving the Yankees a slight edge is a better record on the road with 46-35.
It was a dramatic finish for both teams on Sunday, where each one needed a win to punch their ticket to the Wild Card Game. The Yankees took a thrilling 1-0 walk off win over the Rays to clinch their postseason berth, while the Sox rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Nationals 7-5.
The winner of Tuesdays classic rivalry will go on to play Tampa Bay in the American League Divisional series.

The PIX11 broadcast schedule for the 27-time World Series champions started on April 18, when the Yankees hosted the defending American League Champions Tampa Bay Rays. The game was the first of 21 regular season broadcastsof Yankee games airing exclusively on PIX11. Other key matchups include:
- Friday, July 2 The Yankees will host the New York Mets in the first game of the Subway Series against their crosstown rival.
- Friday, July 23 The Yankees will travel to Boston to face the Red Sox. This is the first of three games between the Yankees and the Red Sox on PIX11 in the 2021 season. The other two games will be on August 17 and Sept. 24.
- Wednesday, Sept. 29 PIX11 will wrap up its 2021 Yankees broadcast schedule with an away game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In addition to airing regular season games, PIX11 will produce pregame specials for many of its primetime Yankees broadcasts, featuring the PIX11 Sports Team of Andy Adler, Joe Mauceri and Justin Walters.
All New York Yankees games broadcast on PIX11 will include second audio program and will be Closed-Captioned.

Voit missed the tail end of the season with left knee inflammation. The issue was expected to keep him out for multiple weeks if the Yankees advanced in the playoffs, but it evidently isn’t an injury which is expected to be still bothering him in February.

Yankees’ Jameson Taillon: Scheduled For Ankle Surgery
Taillon will undergo ankle surgery in late October, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
Taillon hit the injured list in early September with a right ankle tendon injury. He returned for a pair of brief starts at the end of the season but wasn’t fully healthy. The procedure is expected to take five months to recover from, giving him an expected return date in late March. If everything goes smoothly, he could be ready for game action by Opening Day, but even a slight delay will likely send him to the injured list to open the season.

ESPNs Jeff Passan alluded to this yesterday in saying that the Yankees might be the favorites to land Justin Verlander. The Yanks had multiple scouts in attendance to watch Verlander throw his bullpen session and they came away very impressed with what they saw.
There are rumors going around now that the Yankees are talking about a potential two-year deal with the former Cy Young winner. Verlander will be 39 years old by the time the season starts, but hes made it clear that he intends to pitch for several more years if his arm holds up.
The Yankees seem serious about signing Verlander and Verlander appears very interested in New York. A decision could come as soon as tonight if not tomorrow, but the expectation is that we will know where Verlander is going regardless by the end of the week.
Now, one thing to keep in mind is what Noah Syndergaard signed for today. The deal he got surprised many in the industry and if hes commanding that kind of premium, Justin Verlander is going to want more. Given the tight rope the Yankees are trying to walk, that could perhaps force them to balk at the price.
If that were to happen, I would expect New York to shift towards acquiring pitching via trades with the premiums on free agents being so high. This should be a fun week for Yankees fan and dont be surprised if at some point you see that Verlander is going to be wearing pinstripes.

It wouldn’t be a 2021 New York Yankees game without some late-inning drama, right?
I think this Wild Card Game will come down the wire, similar to the final two ballgames New York played at Fenway two weekends ago.
Cole goes five-plus innings, giving up a few runs but racking up double-digit strikeouts. The only reason Aaron Boone calls to the bullpen in the sixth is Cole’s pitch count is in the triple digits and Boston is starting to put together more quality at-bats seeing him a second and third time.
Rafael Devers has had so much success against Cole this year, too. It’s hard not to imagine him giving Boston an edge early against the Bombers’ ace.
Meanwhile, New York’s offense starts slow against Eovaldi, but is able to break through in the middle innings, making this a bullpen game for both sides.
At that point, as much as they’ve been inconsistent this year, I’m putting my faith in New York’s ‘pen. This unit that Boone has at his disposal is the best it’s been all year. Plus, the best arms from that group have been lights out over the last several games and weeks.
While the score remains knotted, Boone summons Jonathan Loáisiga and Chad Green to keep the bats in position to strike. That’s when someone steps up in the bottom of the order, setting the scene for leadoff hitter Anthony Rizzo to drive in the eventual game-winning run.
