Fda Endorsement Essentially Calls For Johnson & Johnson To Be 2

Here’s how many Americans have been vaccinated for Covid-19 so far

An FDA panel unanimously recommended a Johnson and Johnson booster vaccine on Friday, Oct. 15. The terms of the endorsement essentially call for the J& J COVID-19 vaccine to be a two-dose shot, rather than the one-dose shot for which its been known since it first got emergency use authorization last spring.

The panel called for a second shot to be available to people 18 and older, at least two months after the first shot.

Johnson & Johnson: Vaccine Booster Provides Rapid Robust Response

Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday, Aug. 25, announced new data the company said supports the use of its COVID vaccine as a booster shot for people previously vaccinated with their single-shot vaccine.

Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene Hit With Four More Fines For Breaking House Rule By Refusing To Wear A Mask

Watch the first health workers receive Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine in New York

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene faced four more fines Monday for refusing to wear a mask on the House floor and has racked up at least $15,500 in fines for violating the pandemic-dictacted rule.

Greene has been cited at least seven times for breaking the House rule, which was established in January. Members are fined $500 for their first offense and $2,500 for each subsequent offense. The fines are deducted from their congressional pay of $174,000 annually.

According to a Monday news release from the House Ethics Committee, Greene was disciplined four times in late September for failing to wear a mask. The committee had previously made public three earlier occasions in which Greene was fined for breaking the same rule another time in September, once in August, and a first offense in May.

New York Citys coronavirus vaccine mandate for its employees is now in effect meaning the city faces the possible loss, at least for now, of thousands of workers who have not yet gotten their shots.

But the share of employees put on leave was small. Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said Monday that 74 members of the police force are on leave out of more than 50,000 officers and civilians employed by one of the countrys biggest city police departments. Many more have sought exemptions.

About 91 percent of the citys 160,500 workers have been vaccinated, and about 6 percent remain unvaccinated and have been placed on unpaid leave.

Us Teachers Union President Supports Covid Vaccine Mandate

The head of the American Federation of Teachers union said on Aug. 8 that she supports a vaccine mandate for educators.

As a matter of personal conscience, I think that we need to be working with our employers not opposing them on vaccine mandates, AFT President Randi Weingarten said during an appearance on Meet the Press on Aug. 8. The circumstances have changed. It weighs really heavily on me that kids under 12 cant get vaccinated.

% Of Vaccinated New Yorkers Have Gotten Covid

A new analysis of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths from the city health department shows strong effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing serious illness and death, even as the highly infectious delta variant has surged over the summer.

The analysis found that between January and the first week of August, 96.9% of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 were unvaccinated, and just 0.33% of vaccinated New Yorkers have tested positive for COVID-19.

About 97.3% of all COVID-19 deaths within that timeframe have been among people who are not fully vaccinated, according to the analysis.

Even in recent weeks, when the delta variant has led to a rash of breakthrough, albeit relatively mild, cases in vaccinated people, unvaccinated people remain three times more likely to get infected and 13 times more likely to be hospitalized, according to city Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi.

Chokshi framed the release of the internal analysis as bolstering scientific evidence that the vaccines effectively combat the delta variant.

âAlthough you may have heard anecdotes about breakthrough cases, let’s keep in mind that the plural of anecdote is not data,â Chokshi said.

The data included in the analysis are in some cases not accessible through the cityâs COVID-19 data portal, and end three weeks ago, even though cases continue to rise in the city due to the delta variant and increased community spread.

Who Is Eligible For A Vaccine

What to know about COVID

The United States has cleared an important milestone in its vaccine rollout: All people 12 and older are now eligible for the coronavirus vaccine in every state, according to a Times survey.

Universal eligibility follows months where states relied on complicated phase-based plans that prioritized certain vulnerable individuals like older Americans, critical workers and those with certain medical conditions. Often, county plans differed from state plans.

What You Need To Know About Rare Breakthrough Covid

“We are continuing to investigate the number of fully vaccinated people who may have been hospitalized or passed away,” said Abigail Barker, spokesperson for the New York State Department of Health.

Even among states that track cases closely, officials cautioned data is likely incomplete. Vaccinated people who are infected but asymptomatic are probably largely missing from statistics.

Robert Long, spokesperson for Maine Department of Health and Human Services, said, “Those who have been fully vaccinated and have a breakthrough case but are not symptomatic and not part of a regular testing protocol may never be captured in these numbers.”

The CDC is now changing tactics amid new information showing that fully vaccinated people who get Covid can transmit the virus to others.

Critics of the agency like former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, said federal officials are failing to capture the overall scope of infection of Covid cases. Gottlieb told CNBC Friday, “I suspect probably one in 10 infections is actually getting reported.”

What Share Of The Population Has Been Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

The following chart shows the share of the total population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This represents the share that have received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol. If a person receives the first dose of a 2-dose vaccine, this metric stays the same. If they receive the second dose, the metric goes up by 1.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

Vaccine Requirements For Those In The Us Military And Police

In August, the Pentagon said that all 1.3 million active-duty service members will need to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. The directive covers all active-duty members of the Armed Forces or in the Ready Reserve, including the National Guard. The Department of Defense will make Pfizer shots accessible on military installations around the world. Service members who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines will still be considered fully vaccinated. There are some exemptions, including one for religious reasons, but they aren’t granted frequently.

In response to several cities requiring law enforcement officers to get vaccinated, police associations have come out openly against vaccine mandates. In Oregon, for example, police and firefighter associations are suing to block a state-level vaccine requirement.

Right now, members of the military are already required to get at least nine other vaccines — up to 17 total vaccines — depending on where they’re deployed.

Nyc Indoor Vaccine Mandate Begins

New York Citys vaccine mandate, called the Key to NYC Pass, went into effect on Aug. 17. However, it will not be fully enforced until Sept. 13.

The plan requires vaccinations for all workers and customers at indoor dining, indoor fitness and indoor entertainment venues.

Germany Tackles A Surge In Coronavirus Cases

BERLIN Officials in Germany have expressed alarm about a new wave of coronavirus infections as health authorities scramble to roll out booster shots ahead of winter.

As of Monday, there were 155 new infections per 100,000 residents over the past seven days, according to the Robert Koch Institute, Germanys federal agency for disease control. Thats around 25 percent higher than during the same period last year, despite vaccinations being available.

It should be a concern for all of us, outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel told the Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, adding that it appears that a certain recklessness has taken hold among the population again.

Unlike some other countries in Europe, Germany has not made it mandatory for any sectors of the population to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Some 67 percent of Germans are fully vaccinated, while 69 percent have received one shot so far.

The fact that, for example, 2 or 3 million Germans over 60 are still unvaccinated makes me very sad, because that could make a difference for them personally as well as for society as a whole, Merkel said.

With efforts to roll out boosters lagging, Health Minister Jens Spahn on Monday urged Germanys 16 states to reopen mass vaccination centers so that as many people as possible can receive a booster shot as quickly as possible.

All those over 60 should be invited for one, he told German radio.

No Shot No Proof No Service: Nyc Businesses Begin Checks

NEW YORK People dining indoors at New York Citys restaurants, browsing its museums or sweating in its gyms had to show proof Tuesday that they were at least partially inoculated against COVID-19 as the city began the nations largest effort yet to exclude the unvaccinated from public places.

Signs on the front door and windows of The Stop Inn, a Queens diner, warned patrons arriving for breakfast that they had to show proof of at least one vaccine shot to be allowed to dine inside.

Still, Norbu Lama, 17, said he was surprised when a server politely asked for his vaccination card soon after he slid into a booth with his parents and sister.

We didnt know we had to bring it, he said. The server appeared relieved when Lama and his family presented copies of their vaccination cards on their phone, Lama said.

The vaccination mandate, announced two weeks ago by Mayor Bill de Blasio, aims to persuade more people to get vaccinated or else miss out on city amenities like restaurants and bars, movie theaters, bowling alleys, concert halls, indoor sports arenas, and other entertainment venues.

Health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities have been eligible for vaccination in every state since the early part of 2021, and people 65 and older have been eligible for several months in every state.

The C.D.C. on May 12 expanded the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer vaccine to permit use in children 12 and older, allowing young adolescents to potentially start getting vaccinated before school starts in the fall of 2021. It is unclear when children 11 and younger will be eligible for a vaccine. Pfizer and Moderna have expanded the size of their clinical trials for children ages 5 to 11 a precautionary measure designed to detect rare side effects including heart inflammation problems that turned up in vaccinated people younger than 30.

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

We are on the way to several vaccines against COVID-19 vaccine trackers monitor the progress:

Several institutions maintain websites on which they list COVID-19 candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:

Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sinopharm/Beijing, Sinovac, Sputnik V
