Nonprofit Teams With Swimming School To Provide Free Lessons In Brooklyn

This sinks!

New York Citys free swimming programs have been torpedoed again this summer by a national shortage of lifeguards, the Parks Department said.

Due to the national lifeguard shortage, unfortunately we will not be hosting swim programs, including lap swim, senior swim, and Learn to Swim, at our outdoor pools this summer, the city agency posted on its Twitter account Monday afternoon.

The department said its 52 outdoor pools will remain open each day for general swim from 11am-3pm and from 4pm7pm.

Pools across the country have struggled to hire guards in a tight labor market. Around a third of the countrys 309,000 pools are in danger of being unable to even open, according to the American Lifeguard Association.

Big Apple parks officials canceled outdoor swim programs in 2020 due to COVID-19 and again last summer due to hiring challenges.

It sucks, said Grisel Rodriguez, 33, a substitute teacher, Sunset Park resident and mother of an 8-year-old.

Those programs were free and it was helpful to parents especially in this community who come from low income households, she said. I know many kids who learned how to swim here so its unfortunate.

The news comes on the heels of the deaths of two NYC teens who drowned while swimming in Jamaica Bay in eastern Queens. The boys, both 13, drowned when a sandbar they were standing on collapsed and they became submerged.

Melendez, 60, said officials should be offering higher rates for lifeguards.

  • After the lottery is drawn, any remaining spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis through a walk-in registration at the classs location. Walk-in registration will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 17 for the fall session, Saturday, January 16 for the winter session, and Saturday, April 2 for the spring session.

Will My Child With Special Abilities Benefit From Swimming Lessons

Lessons can also be therapeutic and, for many swimmers with special abilities, very calming. Water can soothe sensory overload and give swimmers a feeling of weightlessness and relief from physical discomfort. Other benefits include balance, coordination, strength, and range of motion. Its not uncommon for parents to notice confidence and self-esteem boost, either. When your child learns how to swim with SafeSplash, they receive all the benefits of swimming in a safe, and supportive environment.

Individualized lesson plans are structured based on the goals and the interests of the swimmer.

Children with special abilities best succeed with flexible, patient, empathic teachers who use individual-focused methods. SafeSplash brand Certified Adaptive Aquatics instructors have experience teaching the necessary skills at the appropriate time for children with a variety of special abilities, including:

How The Lottery Works

Due to the high demand of the Learn to Swim program, NYC Parks grants spots through a random lottery system. And the lottery for ALL sessions is open NOW! The lottery actually opened on June 10, but dont panic you still have plenty of time to sign up. Before we get to dates and deadlines, lets dive into how the lottery process works. First, NYC Parks is truly committed to offering free swim classes to as many people as they can, but would you want your kids swim classes to be overly crowded? Of course not. Thats why they offer three different sessions during the summer, in addition to a fourth for advanced swimmers, in all of the NYC boroughs.

Spring Swim Program Details

The Parks Department offers free swim lessons at indoor city pools, with classes for toddlers ages 1.5 to 5, for kids ages 6 to 17, and adults. The full list of participating pools by borough is available on the Parks Department’s website. Important note: If your child is age 1.5 to 5, you are required to be in the water with them during lessons . Children who miss more than two consecutive lessons are dropped from the class.

The spring swim session runs from March 21 through June 11, with a mandatory water test on Saturday, March 21. Registration opens at noon on Monday, March 2 and runs through Monday, March 9 at noon.

Parent & Child Swim Classes

Stage 1: Water Babies P/C 6-18 mos. Using songs, games, and play children learn water-based motor skills such as kicking, arm movements, floating, and blowing bubbles. All activities are designed to make babies more comfortable in the water.

Stage 2: Water Tots P/C 18-24 mos. Swim skills, such as breath control, proper kicking and arm movement, jumping into and climbing out the pool are taught. At this age, repetition is key in learning. Focusing on a few skills per class and repeating them in a fun way is the best way for Tots to learn.

Stage 3: Advanced Water Tots P/C 24-36 mos. For toddlers who are comfortable in the water, this parent/child class begins to transition children to unassisted swimming. Essential skills such as kicking, arm movement, breath control, and floating on both the stomach and back. Swimmers must be comfortable with putting their face in the water to be in this class.

A swim evaluation is not necessary for the above levels.
