In a town so steeped in the past, its no surprise that the inns and resorts have stories, too. Below are three places Ive stayed, plus some recommendations for a few I havent.

So far, The Inn at Cooperstown is my favorite of all Cooperstown accommodations. The inn was built in 1874 as part of the upscale Fenimore Hotel. It was designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, the same architect who designed the Dakota Apartments and Plaza Hotel in New York City. The Fenimore Hotel became the Inn at Cooperstown in 1985.

Conveniently located just off Main Street, everything about the inn is comfortable and beautifully decorated. What I loved most was the friendly and helpful innkeepers and staff. And of course, who doesnt love a wide Victorian front porch lined with comfortable rocking chairs?! A bicycle room is also available for those traveling with their bikes.

Be sure to check their website for their unique Experience Packages.

The high-end choice for your Cooperstown stay, The Otesaga Resort Hotel opened in 1909 and has been owned by the same family since its inception.

The Otesaga is about a 10-minute walk from Main Street.

Where To Stay In Cooperstown

The Best Hotel in Cooperstown: The Otesaga Resort Hotel

I would go back to Cooperstown just to stay at the Otesaga Resort again its the type of hotel thats a destination in itself. The rooms are elegant but the mood is casual enough that you dont feel self-conscious bringing the kids, especially in the outdoor areas.

Built in 1909, its a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Perhaps because it has old bones the rooms are big, with high ceilings and big windows with ideal lake views. For once the three of us didnt feel like we were tripping over each other.

There are tennis courts and a dock where you can borrow canoes, SUPS and kayaks.

A good-size heated pool is surrounded by a nice stone patio, but it wasnt quite warm enough to swim in when we were there thanks to some cold nights .

The hotels second-best feature is a rolling lawn where they sometimes put out games like cornhole or croquet and where we saw kids running around while their parents lingered over drinks after dinner.

The best feature is the large balcony with rocking chairs. Its nice for watching the boats go by in the summer and for appreciating the area foliage in fall. If wed had more time I would have been happy to spend an hour there with a pint of local beer and a good book.

Other lodging options in Cooperstown include motels, B& Bs and small inns.

The Inn at Cooperstown is a B& B right in town where you can comfortably bring kids.

Follow The Cooperstown Beverage Trail

Upstate New York is no stranger to craft beverages. Saranac Brewery in Utica has been in operation since 1888. In addition, most regions in the state have established beverage trails.

In fact, as I learned at the craft beer exhibit at The Farmers Museum, the history of hops is closely intertwined with the history of New York State, especially Cooperstown. The region was once the hops-growing capital in North America. That means you can honor the towns past by sampling as many craft beers as you can.

Currently, eight craft beverage establishments make up the trail, including breweries, wineries, and a distillery. The 37-mile trail is a perfect way to not only sample locally made beverages but also to take a road trip through the heart of Central New Yorks rural landscape. The following businesses make up the beverage trail. Check the website for additional maps and information.

If you can only make it to one, I highly recommend Ommegang for their brewery tour, café, and fabulous Belgian-style beers.
