State laws have held people liable for damages if they started a fire that burned out of control. But a new California law will remove the liability risk for private citizens and Indigenous people who set controlled burns, which are low-intensity and can prevent catastrophic blazes. The law comes into effect Jan. 1. recognizes the value of this Indigenous knowledge and this experience of Native people with fire, so much so that they have said that we are on par with California-certified burn bosses, said Margo Robbins, a member of the Yurok tribe in Northern California and executive director of the Cultural Fire Management Council. If you’re looking for good wings go someplace else!

Visited for the first time after hearing their hot wings were suppose to be amazing. I was very disappointed! The flavor was okay and they were lightly breaded, I liked that. But beware if youre looking for the saucy & spicy wings that Im used to at Long Wongs, forget it. I ordered 2 dozen hot bone-in wings, and I know hot is an opinion but these were straight mild, my 3 year old ate 4 without a problem and hes not one for spicy foods. Also, I expected them to be saucy but they seemed as if they were lightly sauced to keep the breading from getting soggy, which it was anyway. I happen to prefer sauce sitting at the bottom so I can roll them around & have them extra saucy and super hot. Another disappointment were the side of curly fries I ordered, for $4 I expected a bit more, I got a small handful of fries. Usually curly fries will be seasoned, these were not.

So if your forced to go here because Long Wongs is just too far I would suggest trying the Suicide Wings if youre looking for spicy . Tues & Thurs they have wing specials, which may make their sub-par wings worth it.

I was here the first week of January and I had a great lunch with my Coworkers. I ordered some wings with celery. I think this place has the best wings in town.I like how they have the T.V. settings inside the restaurant. I sure…recommend this place to everyone.More

The service was great. The prices fair. The food was good. We watched TV and visited with other patrons. Just a really nice place.

Our family comes here regularly after practices and the occasional Saturday afternoon. Teddy and Katie are our favorite servers and always pleasant. Drinks are made well and food is always very good.

That is about all I can say. The food was mediocre at best and we had wings. Skip the Asian wet sauce on your wings. It was awful. The fried zucchini was decent but not anything to write home about. The waitress was the best…thing about our meal. Amber was exceptional.More

My husband, brother in law and I went to the restaurant last night. We were seated promptly and our waiter was quick and attentive. Our food came out quickly and was hot and tasty. I liked our experience there.

Wings are quite enjoyable with your choice of beer/drink. Sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful evening weather. Super happy that the establishment is non-smoking. This will be my new hang out spot for some adult fun!

Dear Hannah: A Restaurant Advice Column

Where do I take another native NYer to impress them?

    Thanks,

    Born & Raised

Hey there. I dont personally know the born-and-raised New Yorker youre trying to impress, which parts of the city theyre already familiar with, or what it might take to melt their tiny, 917-area-coded heart.

Impressive is one of those subjective words I use all the time, and I propose we eradicate it from our vocabularies on account of being nonsense. For example, I know someone who finds shrimp cocktails endlessly impressive because shes enamored with the union of shellfish and sundae cups – surely not everyone else feels that way, right? Yes, I admit that someone is me.

So, to answer your question, I wrote about one restaurant in every borough unlike anything else in this city, as well as one recently-opened special occasion spot where you can have a big blow-out meal if thats your speed. These are the sorts of eating experiences thatll work as source material for a story you tell at a party five years from now.

Aside from the fine dining option, these restaurants will cost you anywhere from $5 to $40 per person. Anyone who tells you that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a meal to blow someones mind is simply lying to you, and you should tell them to please go away. In any case, native New Yorkers have enough savvy to detect this-only-feels-nice-because-its-expensive bullsh*t.

It Must Be Saving Lives: Could A New York Law Help Unhoused People In California

Good morning, and welcome to the Essential California newsletter. Its Monday, Dec. 6. Im Justin Ray.

I have a confession to make.

All newsletters I sent last week were composed in New York City, either in a hotel near Times Square or at my buddys place in Jackson Heights, Queens.

I lived in the city for seven years before I moved to Los Angeles. During my trip last week, I had many fun moments, like enjoying drinks at the Monster, a piano bar in the West Village, and listening to Jeff Buckleys haunting cover of Hallelujah in Times Square. Unfortunately I didnt get to enjoy a shawarma at Mamouns on MacDougal Street.

Something that stood out to me during my visit was the fact that I saw no tents during my entire stay.

The issue of homelessness is a complicated, controversial onein California. There have been many solutions proposed: tiny houses and converted shipping containers city-sanctioned tent encampments or increasing collaboration among local leaders.

One solution sometimes discussed is replicating New Yorks right to shelter law, which requires New York to provide a place for unhoused people. The law was established 40 years ago.

I want to tell you the story behind the law, because its riveting. Then, I wanted to talk about how feasible it would be for California to adopt a similar mandate.

The case, Callahan vs. Carey established New York states obligation to house homeless men in 1981 .
