Is Public Transportation In New York Safe

Is NYC Safe RIGHT NOW? | What You MUST Know

Another famous sight of New York is its public transport. This has also been featured in films.

Its very likely youll find yourself using it at some point during your trip.

The iconic subway is an intricate web of lines and stations that can take you pretty much everywhere in the city for a snip. Get yourself a metro card and join other New Yorkers, tapping in and out of stations.

Also, get an app to help you navigate the subway. Youll need help trust us. Theres also an official website, Subway Time, which has times and any delay reports.

During peak hours, getting on the subway can be overwhelming. Its common to not make eye contact with people. Keep yourself to yourself. Be aware of your surroundings.

When it comes to using the New York subway at night, a good tip is to stand close to the metro card booth and near to the sign that says off hours trains stop here they tend to be busier spots. Dont ride in empty carriages always opt for busy ones or the conductors car .

Then theres a bus service which runs across all five boroughs. You can also use the metro card on this. They are popular with commuters and can get SUPER busy in rush hour.

The downside of buses is that they get affected by traffic. There are over 6,000 buses that ply 320 routes around the city, so you should be able to get wherever you want to go pretty easily.

The same sort of rules apply: watch out on busy buses for pickpockets, and be careful riding the bus late at night.

New York City Murder Stats

In 2020 New York City reported 468 homicides, which gives it a murder rate of 5.31 per 100,000 residents. The national murder rate is 5 per 100,000 people. New York Citys murder rate is slightly higher than the national average.

468 homicides was a 46.7% increase over 2019 where 319 homicides were reported. New York City also saw a 97% increase in shooting incidents.

New York officials attribute the increase in homicides and shootings to changes in bail reform laws, slowdowns in court proceedings, reductions in arrests and increased gang activity.

As of Nov 21, 2021, there have been 427 homicides reported, which is a 1.2% decrease year over year from 2020.

New York City experienced its highest homicide count in 1990 where 2,262 murders were reported.

Be Careful About What Train Stop You Utilize

If you decide to use the subway to get around, that can save you a lot of money. Hiring a cab or an Uber is a way to travel in style, but its much more expensive. A single cab ride for a few city blocks can easily cost you more than $20.

The trains can take you virtually anywhere in the city you want to go, but when you board one, try to figure out your stop. There are maps posted in nearly every train car, and you can count out how many stops you should pass to get to your destination. You can also carry a subway map with you that you can consult if you need to do so.

If you get out at the wrong stop, it should be a simple enough matter to wait for the next train and get back on so you can correct the mistake. You might also get off in a dangerous neighborhood, though.

The fact is that there are some neighborhoods that are pretty dangerous, and tourists seldom go there. You might be okay in daylight, but you dont want to leave the station and wander around after dark. If you do happen to hop off at the wrong stop, stay in the station and try to catch the next train instead of heading topside, where you risk a potential mugging.

Dont Pay With A Wad Of Cash

Updated 2021

Its extremely unlikely that youll get mugged in NYC, but it does happen from time to time to a minority of people. If you take out a giant stack of 20s or 100-dollar bills to pay for something, you might catch someones attention. This person may want to take your money from you .

You have a lot of options to pay for things here if this type of dangerous situation becomes real. When it comes to medical service in the United States people get what they pay for. Extensively documented research has shown that black and Latino communities are not only more likely than white people to be exposed to COVID-19, require hospitalization, but also die due to the medical facilities and inadequate equipment at the hospitals they have access to.

On the other hand, at the private medical centers in Manhattan, Patients have access to cutting edge technology, specialized drugs and around the clock care. Most of these patients, however, have some of the best insurance plans that cover COVID-19 treatments.

For foreigners who have insurance that covers COVID, it is strongly recommended to double-check with the insurance broker to what extent they will be covered in case they get sick. Many of these companies have multiple only if restrictions on their plans.

Nyc Plowing Ahead With Public Safe Injection Sites

The two new Overdose Prevention Centers and two more planned will apparently resemble those medical labs where one gets blood drawn. Charles King of Housing Works, which hopes to open a site, told Gothamist/NYC that he envisions a setting with white partitions and a mirror, such that addicts can self-inject hard drugs such as heroin but be observed by nurses or an EMT, in case of an overdose.

But there are still good reasons to be concerned about such facilities. As David Murray, longtime chief scientist at the federal Office of National Drug Control, has said, safe injection sites may not actually be safe: The new generation of fentanyl-laced street drugs may be so potent that overdose-reversal drugs may not be effective. The Harlem and Washington Heights sites, to be operated by OnPoint NYC, will, per the citys feasibility study, offer walk-ins the opportunity to have their drugs tested for fentanyl or impurities to minimize risk. But would such testing be required? What if addicts decline such a test? And what if, despite precautions, someone dies in a safe injection site? Such concerns have prompted opposition to such facilities from Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, who has said that government should not be involved in taking on that type of liability.

Murray notes, Addicts may shoot up in safe injection sites but those are not open 24 hours a day. They will continue to inject drugs elsewhere.

New York City Allows Opening Of Safe Illegal Drug Use Sites First In The Nation

New York City became the first city in the country to allow supervised drug use sites where people can use illegal drugs without threat of arrest, under the watch of trained staff, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.

Two sites that already function as needle exchange clinics â in Washington Heights and in East Harlem â opened as so-called Overdose Prevention Centers on Tuesday.

That day, at least five people overdosed while using drugs under supervision in the two clinics, according to published news reports. A spokesperson for the city’s health department declined to confirm the exact number of overdoses. In a news conference Wednesday, de Blasio framed the overdoses, which were reversed and resulted in no deaths, as proof of concept for the sites.

“Five people who could well have overdosed someplace else with, no medical support, and we well know we could have lost one, two or all five of those people,” he said.

The initiative comes as overdose deaths have hit historic highs during the pandemic both in New York City and nationally. Between March 2020 and March 2021, about 2,245 people died of overdoses in New York City, a figure 40% higher than the previous 12-month period, according to CDC data.

The safe use sites, however, will ultimately benefit the communities around them, lowering infection rates for diseases like HIV and hepatitis C, said Pedro Mateu-Gelabert, an associate professor at the City University of New Yorkâs School of Public Health.

Texas Seized Enough Fentanyl To Kill 200 Million People This Year Alone Officials Say

Smoking crack cocaine is officially sanctioned at the safe injection sites Mayor Bill de Blasio brought to Manhattan this week in a move thats infuriated the centers neighbors and has at least one business owner packing his bags.

People are allowed to bring the substance that they prefer to use here and they are permitted to consume the substance in the manner of their choice, East Harlem site director Kailin See confirmed.

We are there to make sure that no medical emergency occurs and to connect them into care if they need that, she said, adding that many of her clients use drugs laced with fentanyl including heroin, cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, amphetamine and K2.

The nonprofit is one of two in Upper Manhattan that became the countrys first legal shooting galleries when they opened Tuesday.

And they have had an immediate effect but maybe not the one de Blasio, who has just four weeks left in office, was hoping for as business owners still left standing try and dig out from the pandemic.

One merchant near the second center, in Washington Heights, said the junkie haven is forcing him to move his retail shop out of the neighborhood.

Now theyre going to promote the drugs and people dont have to worry if they get sick or theyre going to die because theyre gonna have medical people that are gonna take care of them so that they dont overdose and die so that they can do their drugs again tomorrow? the shop owner said.

How Dangerous is New York City? – NYC Safety

New York City is not generally considered to be a dangerous place to visit or to live, but there are certain neighborhoods that are safer than others. The City of New York’s interactive crime map shows the most crimeincluding burglaries, assaults, rapes, murders, and robberies reported to local police departmentsconcentrated in the areas of Washington Heights and Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan Hunts Point and Tremont in The Bronx Clinton Hill and East New York in Brooklyn and Hillside in Queens. On the map, you can filter the results by date range and crime type.

Tourists should focus their travels on low-crime areas such as Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Upper West Side, and Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. Even so, it would be impossible to travel to a section of New York City that is entirely crime-free. During the daytime, almost all areas of Manhattan are safe for walkingeven Harlem and Alphabet City, though you may consider avoiding these neighborhoods after dark. Times Square is a great place to visit at night and it stays populated until after midnight when theater-goers head home.

Mayor de Blasios announcement of two so-called safe injection sites for drug users one in Washington Heights and another in East Harlem makes New York the first US city to legally permit such facilities.

The hope is, of course, to save lives. But the city will also be taking a side in a pitched legal and moral debate about the effectiveness of such sites and, in fact, authorizing facilities that will be operating in violation of federal drug law. An upcoming court case based on a similar proposal in Philadelphia will reveal whether the Biden administration will move to permit such harm reduction facilities nationwide.

The underlying assumptions of the harm reduction movement are clear. Drug addicts will continue to seek and use increasingly powerful, illegal street drugs and its better to provide clean needles and the on-site overdose reversal drug naloxone than let them join the more than 100,000 Americans who died from an overdose in the year that ended in April, a tragic new record.
