Brainstorming Powerful Essay Ideas

Once again, you never want to write about how much you want to live in New York City. There are plenty of schools that share NYUs geographic location. Furthermore, there are thousands of students who want to live in a city as diverse, resource-rich, and historic as New York City.

Your goal is to set yourself apart from the rest of the applicants. Your story will help you do this.

Dig deeper.

Write down what you care about. What

  • makes you happy?
  • are you inspired by?

Dont hold back here either. Be completely honest with yourself.

In the college admissions process, you may be able to lie to yourself, but its hard to lie to the college admissions committee. Its not worth the risk.

Be honest about what you care about, and it will shine through in your essay. Once youve come up with your list, look through your research from Step 2. What does NYU care about? Perhaps, youve learned that they care about the arts, curiosity, intercultural exchange, and open-mindedness.

Do you

  • care about the arts? Are you curious?
  • enjoy learning from and learning with people from cultural backgrounds different from yours?
  • consider yourself to be open-minded?

Why, or why not? Once again, the key here is to be honest.

Dig deeper. Explore your values, memories, interests, and hobbies.

Students often say that their anecdotes arent interesting. Thats fine!

An English teacher, your favorite teacher , and a friend who is always honest are great choices for additional readers.

A great English teacher knows the mechanics of the English language very well and will be honest with you about how your essay looks and sounds.

  • Bad punctuation is a death knell, and awkward words and phrases could move your essay from the wow weve got to take him/her pile to the snooze/meh pile.

Pick an English teacher with whom you have a good/neutral relationship, and approach them with the utmost respect and humility.

  • Remember, they dont have to read your essay. Theyre doing you a favor.
  • Ask them to mark it up for you, if they have time, and to give their honest thoughts and opinions.
  • If they really like you, they may do this several times. After the process is said and done, be sure to send them a thank you card.

Your favorite teacher may not be your English teacher, but theyre just as valuable because they usually have a really good sense of your likes, dislikes, as well as your authenticity. In other words, they can tell if youre lying or trying to be something youre not.

You need someone who knows you well and can tell you if youre being honest in your essay. Your favorite teacher may also be able to remind you of things about yourself that youve forgotten.

Pick a friend who isnt afraid to tell you that your writing is terrible, or that you could have worded things a little better.

Sat Score Vs Gpa For Admissions

There is ongoing debate among education experts over whether SAT/ACT scores should be given more consideration than a students high school GPA. Some college admissions offices say they believe the GPA packs more of a punch as it measures a students efforts, focus, and consistency over four years, versus the SAT score which is determined by a students performance in a matter of hours.

Those same college admissions offices, however, are actually giving serious consideration to SAT scores behind the scenes. Although its true that the GPA is the only numerical value that can reveal a students hard work, self-discipline, and intellectual growth over time, it only measures a students standing within their own school as opposed to the nationally standardized comparison that the SAT/ACT score offers. The GPA also can reflect teacher bias or grade inflation, where the SAT and ACT are administered and evaluated by a neutral, credible third party.

While the GPA is still an important indicator of a students academic potential in the college admissions process, the SAT/ACT score still tends to trump all at colleges that require test scores.

Great Schools That Don’t Require Sat Or Act Scores

  • The SAT and ACT are two of the most common metrics schools use to determine who they allow in.
  • But many students suffer from crippling test anxiety, which can impact scores and lower their chances of attending their college of choice.
  • Recent studies suggest that standardized tests disproportionately favor white and wealthy students.
  • Here are 30 universities that don’t require SAT or ACT scores.
  • Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more stories.

For many prospective college students, taking the SATs and ACTs is a nerve-wracking, anxiety-producing experience. While the SAT can certainly help some students by potentially acting as a type of equalizer for those with lower high school grades, a growing bodyof research shows that placing so much weight in these types of exams can cause crippling anxiety.

In 2018, Jennifer Heissel, an associate professor at the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School, studied stress levels from a group of New Orleans elementary school students before and after they took a standardized test. The findings did not bode well for the exams. The test increased the children’s cortisol levels, which in turn led to poor results.

“We found that the kids who had large responses in changes in their cortisol performed worse on high-stakes test,” Heissel told INSIDER.
