Original Fiterman Hall Site
A 16-floor office building at 30 West Broadway opens in 1959. It is purchased in 1978 by businessman Miles Fiterman. He and his wife Shirley donate the building to City University of New Yorks Borough of Manhattan Community College in 1993.
Valued at $30 million, the building is the most valuable gift ever given to a U.S. community college at the time. CUNY, a New York State-controlled public university, renames the building Fiterman Hall in honor of the couple’s donation and repurposes it to house 40 classrooms and computer labs. The new facilities help BMCC to ease a shortage of classroom space at its main hub several blocks away.
Swamp White Oaks And The Survivor Tree
Throughout the memorial are several hundred swamp white oak trees, which, according to the 911 Memorial website, were chosen for their durability as well as their variety of heights and leaf colors.
However, there is one particular tree that stands out. Among the rubble of the fallen towers, an 8 foot Callery pear tree was found alive, but just barely.
Removed from the rubble, the tree was nursed back to health and replanted in the plaza. It has since flourished and has grown to 30 feet in height.
The tree embodies the story of survival and resilience important to the history of the World Trade Center and 9/11.
From the Survivor Tree, walk towards the glass atrium of the museum where you can view the Tridents.

Placed inside the Museum, but visible from the Memorial Plaza, are two 70-foot high, 50 ton steel beams that were part of the base of the North Tower.
These beams, salvaged from the wreckage of the fallen towers, are known as tridents because of their three-pronged tops .
National September 11 Memorial Museum
The 9/11 Memorial Museum opened to the public on May 21, 2014. The museum collection includes more than 23,000 images, 500 hours of video, and 10,000 artifacts. The atrium entrance to the 9/11 Memorial Museum houses two tridents from the steel facade of WTC 1 that you can see without paying museum admission.
The historical exhibitions cover the events of 9/11 and also explore the global mood leading up to the events of that day and their ongoing significance. The memorial exhibition displays portrait photographs of each of the 2,977 people who lost their lives that day, with an interactive feature that lets you learn more about the individuals. In Foundation Hall you can see a wall from the foundation of one of the towers in addition to a 36-foot-tall steel column still covered with the missing posters placed there in the days following the disaster. Rebirth at Ground Zero, an immersive film that follows the rise of the new World Trade Center, also has a permanent home at the museum.
Visitors spend an average of two hours at the museum. Family members of victims enter for free, while visitors can pre-order tickets online or buy them onsite.

Early Proposals For Redesign
Lower Manhattan Development Corporation
Governor Pataki established the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation in November 2001, as an official commission to oversee the rebuilding process. The LMDC coordinates federal assistance in the rebuilding process, and works with the PANYNJ, Larry Silverstein, and Studio Daniel Libeskind, the master plan architect for the site’s redesign. The corporation also handles communication with the local community, businesses, the city of New York, and relatives of victims of the September 11 attacks. A 16-member board of directors, half appointed by the governor and half by the mayor of New York, governs the LMDC.
The LMDC had questionable legal status regarding the restoration of the World Trade Center site, because the Port Authority owns most of the property and Larry Silverstein leased the World Trade Center’s office space in July 2001. But the LMDC, in an April 2002 articulation of its principles for action, asserted its role in revitalizing lower Manhattan.
Directly after the attacks
In the months following the attacks, architects and urban planning experts held meetings and forums to discuss ideas for rebuilding the site. In January 2002, New York City art dealerMax Protetch solicited 50 concepts and renderings from artists and architects, which were put on exhibit in his Chelseaart gallery.

The Fdny Memorial Wall
Located on Greenwich Street at the corner of Liberty Street, just southeast of the 9/11 Memorial hangs the FDNY Memorial Wall by artist Joe Petrovics.
This 7000 pound bronze wall is attached to the wall of Engine and Ladder Company 10, the local fire station.
It is a memorial to the 343 active NYC firefighters who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 + 1 local attorney who was a volunteer firefighter outside of the city.
The 56-foot long bas-relief sculpture depicts the World Trade Center towers in flames and scenes of firefighters executing their duties.

How Much Time Do You Need
Although a quick trip can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes, some guests may want to set aside a little more time to experience the memorial.
There are also several additional monuments nearby that are directly related to the events of 9/11, so you may want to ensure that you have at least 1 hour to see everything.

The 9/11 Museum is located right between the two monuments and you will require tickets for entry.
This location includes several exhibits covering the history before, during, and after the events of September 11th.

The National 9/11 Memorial Plaza
The long-awaited National 9/11 Memorial lies at the heart and soul of the World Trade Center site. Two 30-foot waterfall memorials designed by architect Michael Arad are in the exact locations where the fallen twin towers once soared skyward. Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” was the first design to break the plane between above- and below-ground, as the water descends toward the broken foundations of the fallen skyscrapers and to the 9/11 Memorial Museum below. Construction began in March 2006. Landscape architect Peter Walker helped actualize Arad’s vision, a serene and solemn area that officially opened on September 11, 2011.
Near the memorial waterfalls sits a large, steel and glass entryway to the National September 11 Memorial Museum. This Pavilion is the only aboveground structure on the 9/11 Memorial Plaza.
The Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta spent nearly a decade designing and redesigning the Pavilion. Some say its design is like a leaf, complementing Santiago Calatrava’s bird-like Transportation Hub nearby. Others see it as a glass shard permanently embeddedlike a bad memoryinto the landscape of the Memorial Plaza. Functionally, the Pavilion is the entrance to the museum underground.

Years After: The Transformation Of Ground Zero
Healing never happens as fast as the hurt. The smoldering bramble of concrete and steel at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan took only minutes to amass, but it took years to decide just what to put in its place.
Leave it empty, out of respect? Rebuild, as an act of defiance? “I think they should do something that kind of preserves the other towers, like, the memory of them,” one woman said.
The stakes for stitching up Ground Zero’s gaping wound were monumental.
“There’s been no project in our lifetimes that’s had the combination of an emotional component like Ground Zero, and the physical size of it,” said Paul Goldberger, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his architectural criticism in The New York Times. He kept a watchful eye as a host of different plans were proposed for those 16 acres land that was as hallowed as it was valuable.
“To have just rebuilt and not to have commemorated in some way would have been callous and cruel and stupid,” Goldberger told correspondent Lee Cowan.
Which is why, at its heart, sits the calm of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The sound of falling water drowns out the chaos of the city.
The names of those lost encircle footprints seemingly made by the ghosts that once stood there.
The public space around it is open, and bright, and living.

Deutsche Bank Building Site
A 40-floor office building and elevated plaza owned by U.S. banking firm Bankers Trust opens at 130 Liberty Street in 1974. Known as Bankers Trust Plaza, the steel tower has a facade of black aluminum and darkened glass. It is renamed the Deutsche Bank Building after the German bank buys Bankers Trust in 1999.

Original Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Site
Site of future Vehicle Security Center
After years of negotiations over the fate of the Saint Nicholas site, local and state authorities reach a preliminary agreement with Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in July 2008 for the church to be rebuilt in a future park one block east of the buildings original location. The deal calls for the archdiocese to transfer land rights for the destroyed churchs 155 Cedar Street plot to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, so that the bi-state agency can begin excavating the site to build an underground Vehicle Security Center for the new World Trade Center complex.
In return for the land transfer, the Port Authority agrees to provide the archdiocese with $20 million to rebuild the church on a larger plot at the new location, and agrees to spend a further $20 million to $40 million in building a platform to support the new building above the Vehicle Security Center.
But negotiations to finalize the deal break down in March 2009. The Port Authority moves ahead with excavation work at the former church site in mid-2010, saying it cannot wait any longer to start building the Vehicle Security Center that will serve as a vital underground artery for the rebuilt World Trade Center complex. The archdiocese sues the Port Authority in February 2011, accusing it of trespassing and violating terms of the preliminary land deal.

Mr. de Blasio said the aggressive measure, which takes effect Dec. 27 and which he described as the first of its kind in the nation, was needed as a pre-emptive strike to stall another wave of coronavirus cases and help reduce transmission during the winter months and holiday gatherings.
Omicron is here, and it looks like its very transmissible, he said in an interview on MSNBC. The timing is horrible with the winter months.
New York City has already put vaccine mandates in place for city workers and for employees and customers at indoor dining, entertainment and gyms. Nearly 90 percent of adult New York City residents now have at least one dose of the vaccine.
But Mr. de Blasio said the city must go further to combat another wave of the virus in New York City, once the center of the pandemic. Some private employers have required employees to get vaccinated, but many others have not.
They have won in court state court, federal court every single time, the mayor said on MSNBC. And its because theyre universal and consistent.

One World Trade Center
One World Trade Center rises from Ground Zero the location of the September 2001 terrorist attacks. The building was originally called Freedom Tower, but it was later changed to its current name for marketing reasons. Precisely because the building has such high symbolic value, the design and implementation phases took quite a long time. There were many designs and conflicting ideas. We were starting to wonder why there was so little progress at the construction site during our 5 visits subsequent to 9/11.
Ground Zero Rebuilding Still Continues In New York 20 Years After 9/11
NEW YORK Two decades after its destruction in the Sept. 11 attacks, the work to rebuild the World Trade Center complex remains incomplete.
Two planned skyscrapers, a performing arts center and a church are still unfinished at the site, which plays host Saturday to the annual ceremony honoring nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
Visitors to the commemoration will find a place that no longer has the feel of a construction zone, though, even as the work continues.
The memorial plaza with its twin reflecting pools opened in 2011. One World Trade Center the spire originally known as the Freedom Tower opened in 2014, as did the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum. An underground transit hub and shopping mall opened in 2016. Three other glassy towers built to replace those lost in the attack are open.

After hijacked planes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11, Marriott staff evacuate hundreds of guests. They also help hundreds of workers fleeing the North Tower through the hotel’s lobby, directing them to an exit at the southern end of the hotel onto Liberty Street.
The fall of the South Tower at 9:59 am creates a huge gash in the center of the hotel, cutting it in two as seen in a photo taken by American freelance photojournalist Bill Biggart from West Street. The North Towers fall at 10:28 am kills Biggart seconds after he takes the photo and demolishes most of the rest of the hotel, except for a small section of several floors at its southern edge. Biggart is the only professional photographer killed in the attacks.
Two Marriott employees and at least 41 firefighters are killed at the hotel, according to a New York Times analysis published in 2002. The New York Times also quotes a Marriott spokeswoman as saying 11 registered hotel guests are unaccounted for.
