Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal’s Shorepower

Since 2016, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal offers shore-power services. The shore-to-ship electric power supply project was first announced in 2011. Cunard’s liner RMS Queen Mary 2 was the first-ever vessel – officially pluged-in on November 12, 2016.

Costs were ~USD 10 million and involve substantial infrastructure improvements. Ship operators must spend ~USD 1 million to make a vessel shorepower-ready. Demand on the energy grid is substantial too. A typical container ship in port uses about as much energy as a single terminal at Bostons Logan Airport, while RMS Queen Mary 2 requires 13 megawatts .

Sailing On The Disney Magic Out Of New York City

If youre sailing out of New York City, that means youre sailing on the Disney Magic. Sailing on the Disney Magic is a little underrated in my opinion. Sure, its an older and smaller ship, but the experiences onboard really are magical! Rapunzels Royal Table is still one of my favorite dining experiences onboard a Disney Cruise Line ship, and they even have a Broadway-style show dedicated to the lost Princess. Yes, its a smaller ship, but that can be good in a lot of ways. There are fewer people, its easier to get around, and overall it just has a more homey feel to it.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal Overview

Cruise Ship In New York Harbor

Awarded Best US Homeport by TravelAge West magazine, New York City has been serving cruise passengers longer than any other US city. In 2004, to secure its position as a first-class passenger terminal, the City of New York began a program of $200 million in capital investment at the cruise terminals. The upgrades at Manhattan Cruise Terminal allow Pier 88 and Pier 90 to serve the worlds biggest ships. An additional $4 million investment in Passenger Boarding Bridges is being made to handle the worlds newest and largest ships.

Manhattan Cruise Terminal now includes modern adjustable gangways and expanded pier aprons to load and unload passengers and supplies with greater speed, comfort, and efficiency. The redeveloped terminals also segregated embarking and disembarking passengers onto separate levels, allowing for more efficient use of passenger space and reducing congestion.

Port Inland Distribution Network

The Port Inland Distribution Network involves new or expanded transportation systems for redistribution by barge and rail for the shipped goods and containers that are delivered at area ports in an effort to curtail the use of trucks and their burden on the environment, traffic, and highway systems. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey , New Jersey Department of Transportation , and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission , are involved in initiatives to review and develop this network. To instantiate PIDN, the PANYNJ signed an agreement November 29, 2003 with the Port of Albany to provide twice weekly barge service. By 2014, the service had been discontinued.

In 2018, service between Newark and Brooklyn to Port of Davisville in Rhode Island was initiated.

Where Can You Park In New York City For A Disney Cruise

What to Expect on a Disney Cruise From New York City

If youre taking a Disney Cruise you can park at the New York City Terminal. So now that you know where youre going, its a good idea to figure out how you are getting there! Personally, I cannot drive in New York City. I mean, I can, but if I want my sanity to remain intact, then, well I cant. But if you are braver at heart than me, and want to drive in NYC and park at the terminal, heres what you should know. Parking is $40 per day, which can be pretty pricey depending on the length of your cruise but the terminal parking is also the most convenient if you want to drive there yourself. Parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis and it fills up pretty quickly from what locals had told me. They dont accept reservations and they open parking at 9 am. You can read all about parking at the NYC terminal here.

There are other options for parking as well and a quick google search can lead to you the other options available for cruising out of New York City.

There are other numerous ways to get to the terminal ifdriving is not your chosen mode of transportation. Depending on how you plan totravel, where youre traveling from, and what airport you may be flying into, there is no shortage of options.

The trick is finding the option that will get you there withlittle fuss that also doesnt cost a lot of money.

Land Reclamation And Ocean Dumping

Channelization and landfilling began in the colonial era and continued well into the 20th century.

Early materials were shellfish and other refuse, and later construction debris from projects such as the New York City Subway and Pennsylvania Station. Rubble from the bombing of London was transported for ballast during World War II. New land has been created throughout the port, including large swaths that are now Battery Park City, Ellis Island, Liberty State Park, Flushing MeadowsCorona Park, and the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

From 1924 until 1986, sewerage sludge was hauled by tugboat and barge to a point 12 miles offshore in the Atlantic. From 1986 to 1992 it was dumped at a site 106 nautical miles from Atlantic City, after which ocean dumping was banned.

Barges were also used to transport waste to Fresh Kills Landfill, the world’s largest, which operated from 1948 to 1991. Both operations were known to be detrimental to Long Island and Jersey Shore beaches, notably the 1987 Syringe Tide.

Checking In For Your Disney Cruise In New York City

Cruise to New York City with Princess | Princess Cruises

Once you get to the port, the next step is checking in! Maybe its just the layout of the terminal or maybe cruisers out of New York tend to arrive earlier, but the lines were very long when we arrived at 10:30 am. From the time we got to the port, got through security, and checked in, it took about an hour. Im sure this varies from trip to trip but this was our experience.

First, youll go through security, and then youll be separated into check-in lines in the next room based on your Castaway Club status. Be sure to have all of your boarding documents ready. Theyll activate your Cruise card and grab a quick photo. Then you can hang out in the terminal until your boarding group is called. The waiting area was really full by the time we got through checking in, so we sat in overflow seating outside of the designated Disney area, but Cast Members are easily identifiable and will walk up and down the aisles updating passengers with the boarding groups being called.
