Voters Tell Cbs2 What Issues Made Them Vote The Way They Did
Polls are open in New York for the first of two summer primaries. On Tuesday, voters will decide their candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and Assembly.
Voters that spoke to CBS2’s John Dias had done their homework. While many of them said they know no politician is perfect, they also know the reasons why they’re voting for their candidate, and the issues they want to see resolved.
Using their direct link to democracy, New Yorkers far and wide were coming out to cast their vote on Primary day.
On the ballot is the race for governor. On the Democratic side, Gov. Kathy Hochul is running against Congressman Tom Suozzi and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. On the Republicans ballot is former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, businessman Harry Wilson and Congressman Lee Zeldin.
Voters said they know why they’re voting the way they are, with top issues on their minds.
“The guns and killing of our children,” one said.
“Immigrant rights are key. Workers’ rights,” another said.
“You can’t buy anything,” Gervasi said. “Shopping used to take me 20 minutes. Now, I’m there an hour, looking at this price and price, and that’s not fair.”
Political experts predict voter turnout this year could increase, following two recent decisions by the Supreme Court, one on guns and the other on abortion rights.
“I think the country is at its most dangerous moments in its history,” one voter said.
It’s what got Bronx resident Sheryl Barrett to the polls.
State Political Party Revenue
State political parties typically deposit revenue in separate state and federal accounts in order to comply with state and federal campaign finance laws.
The Democratic Party and the Republican Party maintain state affiliates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and select U.S. territories. The following map displays total state political party revenue per capita for the Democratic state party affiliates.
South Carolina Runoff To Pick Democratic Senate Challenger
South Carolina’s Democratic Senate runoff is between state Representative Krystle Matthews and Catherine Fleming Bruce, an author and activist.
Flemming Bruce emerged as the front-runner in this month’s three-way Democratic Senate primary with nearly 35 percent of the vote with Matthews in second with just over 33 percent.
Matthews, who was elected to the state Legislature in 2018, has the backing of other lawmakers. An author and preservationist, Flemming Bruce was appointed as the foreperson of a State Grand Jury probe into corruption.
Both are running on platforms of expanding universal health care, protecting voting rights and other progressive priorities. The winner will take on Republican incumbent Tim Scott. The last time the state elected a Democrat to Senate was in 1998.

Can I Vote If I Am An Immigrant

If you have become a naturalized U.S. citizen since moving here, you can vote.
Otherwise, you cant vote in New York yet. A coalition of nonprofit organizations has been pushing to expand city voting to nearly 900,000 immigrants across the five boroughs, including green card holders, DACA recipients and people with certain work permits.
Paul Westrick, senior manager of democracy policy at the New York Immigration Coalition, said: Its a huge population of New Yorkers who may not have the piece of paper that theyre a citizen, but theyre New Yorkers. We have folks who are woven into the fabric of New York City and who are being taxed but not represented.
The expansion has broad support in the City Council, among a few borough presidents, numerous local state and federal elected officials and even from some mayoral candidates, but it will not pass before this years elections. If the measure passes later, it would mean non-citizen immigrants with certain statuses could vote in New York City municipal elections, but not in statewide or national contests. Keep your eyes out for 2023.
How Are Candidates Polling
Hochul holds a strong lead over her opponents, with 55% Democratic support in a poll conducted online from June 20 to 22 by John Zogby Strategies, as reported to Forbes. Suozzi holds 22% support, and Williams 19%.
Among the GOP candidates, Zeldin is polling the best statewide, with 34.5% of likely Republican voters statewide saying theyd support him in the upcoming primary, according to the Zogby poll.
Guiliani, Astorino and Wilson are maintaining lower levels of statewide Republican support, with 28%, 16% and 14%, respectively.

The governor and lieutenant governor primary races might have taken center stage on Tuesday night, but this years Democratic primaries included several dozen competitive Assembly races too, and it was another election year that tested just how far left-leaning candidates could go in the states lower legislative chamber.
As initial results started to come in, some of the progressive challengers appeared to be off to a rocky start, with several of the left-wing insurgents backed by the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America falling behind incumbents or more moderate opponents. As City & State reported earlier this month, progressive candidates were expected to have a tougher time achieving upset victories this year. After all, the 2018 and 2020 elections demonstrated that incumbents shouldnt underestimate progressives.The results reported on Tuesday night still dont include all the absentee ballots that will be counted but it seemed that few, if any, races were close enough that mailed-in votes could be decisive.
Initial results showed several of the incumbent Assembly members in contested primaries with comfortable leads or even projected wins. Just before midnight, The Associated Press called races for Assembly Members Jeffrey Dinowitz and Michael Benedetto in the Bronx, Angelo Santabarbara in Schenectady, and Deborah Glick and Inez Dickens in Manhattan.

Republican primary voters in Colorado resoundingly rejected Donald Trumps brand of politics Tuesday, choosing more moderate nominees for key offices over a group of candidates that had embraced the former Presidents lies about election fraud.
In Illinois, however, GOP voters sided with Trump, choosing the conservative state senator he had endorsed as their nominee to take on Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and picking Trumps preferred candidate in a down-state congressional contest.
Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma and Utah held primary elections Tuesday. Mississippi and South Carolina held runoff elections, while Nebraska held a special election to replace former Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, which was won by Republican Mike Flood.

Colorados election deniers are denied by GOP voters
Many Republicans in Colorado were aghast at the prospect of Tina Peters, the indicted Mesa County clerk who has parroted Trumps falsehoods about voter fraud, taking over the states elections machinery. On Tuesday, those GOP voters rejected Peters bid to take on Democratic Secretary of State Jena Griswold. Instead, they nominated Pam Anderson, a former county clerk who has defended the integrity of Colorados vote-by-mail system.
But Illinois embraced Trumps candidates

Zeldin Projected Winner In New Yorks Republican Governor Primary
He will face off with New Yorks Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul this fall, who won her primary on Tuesday over New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., NBC News projected. Hochul is currently serving out the remainder of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomos term after Cuomo resigned from office last year in a sexual misconduct scandal.
Zeldin faces an uphill battle in the overwhelmingly Democratic state, which has not elected a Republican governor since former Gov. George Pataki won a third term in 2002.
Meanwhile, Giulianis campaign closed with his father, who is at the center of the investigation into the Jan. 6 attack for his involvement in Trumps efforts to overturn the election, accusing a grocery store worker of assaulting him at a campaign stop on Sunday. Video showed that store clerk giving him what appeared to be a stiff pat on the back. The elder Giuliani said after the incident that he could have been killed.
That grocery store worker, Daniel Gill, 39, was initially charged with second-degree assault, but prosecutors later downgraded the charge to misdemeanor assault with intent to cause physical injury, according to court records. Prosecutors did add two other misdemeanor counts, third-degree menacing and second-degree harassment, records showed. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, suggested Tuesday that Giuliani exaggerated his claims
Expert Breaks Down The Key Races
Usually, there’s a low turnout for primary elections, but with two major Supreme Court decision happening recently, experts think the changes will surely drive more people to the polls.
It’s a big day for New York – primary day. On the Democratic side, Gov. Kathy Hochul is running against Rep. Tom Suozzi and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
Republicans Rob Astorino, Andrew Giuliani, Harry Wilson and Rep. Lee Zeldin are facing off.
Many issues are on the minds of voters, like the economy and crime.
“We know the economy always jumps to the top of the pack in national. And crime always jumps to the top in local and city. So I think we’re in a wide open space here,” said Columbia University professor Eshter Fuchs.
When voters head to the polls, two recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court – one on guns, and the other on abortion rights -will also make all the difference, increasing turnout, which could change the end result.
Zeldin, who is the official GOP nominee, also has to worry about losing voters to Giuliani.
“Well, this is an interesting question about who Andrew Giuliani’s base is. So he and Zeldin really are fighting for the same voter,” Fuchs said.
And if more moderate to liberal Republicans, known as “Rockefeller Republicans,” show up, it’s a win for Wilson.
“Wilson will benefit,” Fuchs said. “He’s the moderate.”
State Assembly primaries are also on the ballot, where Eric Adams and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are both looking to flex their political muscles.

Now The Focus Turns To Congress
Primary season in New York is far from over in some ways it has just begun. New Yorks politics will next veer into primaries for the key House midterms, a chance for voters of all stripes to make their voices heard at the federal level after last weeks landmark Supreme Court decision ending the constitutional right to abortion.
Primary day for New Yorks House races is set for Aug. 23.
When Are The Primaries
New Yorks gubernatorial primaries will take place on Tuesday, June 28. Early voting began across the state on Saturday, June 18.
A primary for New York Assembly members will also take place on June 28. Primaries for New York congressional representatives and state Senate members is scheduled for Aug. 23.

Matthews Wins South Carolina’s Democratic Senate Runoff
South Carolina state Representative Krystle Matthews has won the Democratic nomination for Senate, beating Catherine Fleming Bruce in Tuesday’s runoff.
The Associated Press called the race for Matthews, who had nearly 57 percent of the vote over author and activist Fleming Bruce, according to the most-recent count.
Both Black women, Fleming Bruce emerged from the primary earlier this month ahead of Matthews, who managed to pull off a win in the primary.
Matthews will not take on Republican incumbent Tim Scott, the only Black Republican Senator who is favored to win re-election.
Construction CEO Joe O’Dea has won the Republican nomination for Colorado’s U.S. Senate seat.
The Associated Press is projecting O’Dea the winner over state legislator Ron Hanks, who was present at protests outside the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The most-recent vote count had O’Dea ahead with 57 percent.
O’Dea has presented himself as a “conservative outsider” focused on clamping down on crime and inflation while supporting the police and military.
Hanks, who echoed Donald Trump’s exhaustively disproven claim the 2020 presidential election, wouldn’t commit during a debate earlier this month to accepting the results of the primary race, the Colorado Sun reports.
O’Dea will face Democratic incumbent Michael Bennet, who was appointed to the seat in 2009 and won a full term a year later and was reelected in 2016.
