New York’s first significant theatre presence arose about 1750 when actor-managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street, which held about 280 people. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas such as The Beggar’s Opera. In 1752, William Hallam sent a company of twelve actors from Britain to the colonies with his brother Lewis as their manager. The company moved to New York in 1753, performing ballad operas and ballad-farces like Damon and Phillida. The Revolutionary War suspended theatre in New York, but thereafter theatre resumed in 1798, the year the 2,000-seat Park Theatre was built on Chatham Street ” rel=”nofollow”> Park Row). The Bowery Theatre opened in 1826, followed by others.

I am grateful to the Mayors Fund and our partners for their commitment to provide more youth with opportunities to participate in sports and programs where they can develop life skills to succeed on and off the pitch.”

These soccer pitches are a tremendous contribution to the mental and physical fitness of our young people. The skills they learn and the games they play provide opportunities for them to learn teamwork and empathy, said First Lady Chirlane McCray. I thank the Mayors Fund and community partners for fulfilling a promise to bring 50 new soccer pitches to neighborhoods all across New York City.”

Why It Is Great

  • Instead of playing the stereotype that all witches are wicked, this show takes the class movie and gives it a cool twist, a message not to judge people by their look or the first impressions. You will walk out of the theatre, appreciating this evil character more.

  • The music is entertaining and catchy. Some of my favorites are Defying Gravity, Popular, Dancing Through Life, and For Good.

  • The stage is incredibly beautiful and detailed, which creates an immersive experience to make you feel like being part of the show, not to mention the gorgeous costumes, magical lighting, sound design, and choreography.

Best Broadway Shows For Tweens And Teens

Reopens Thursday, October 7Booth TheatreIf you love Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, you’ll love his latest Broadway hit, Freestyle Love Supreme. The show is an improvisational hip-hop performance, where performers rap, dance, sing, riff, beatbox, and create musical numbers based on audience suggestions. Every show is a little different depending on the audience and its rotating cast of performers. This is live performance at its best. It’s raucous, funny, inspiring, and yes, a little raunchy. Recommended for ages 10 and up.

Reopens Tuesday, October 5Shubert TheatreThe only non-musical in this roundup, Aaron Sorkin’s exhilarating stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s seminal 1960 novel is a must-see for fans. Admittedly, he takes great liberties with the structure, having Scout, Gem, and Dill share narration duties as they tell the story like a memory play. But it’s a dramatically sound decision that really packs an emotional wallop as this well-known tale of lawyer Atticus Finchplayed by Jeff Daniels, who is reprising his role for the reopeningfighting racism in the Jim Crow South unfolds. Because of terrifying scenes of bigotry, copious use of the N-word, talk of rape, and an almost three-hour running time, this show is best for high schoolers. Reading the book or watching the Gregory Peck movie in advance really helps enhance the experience as you see how Sorkin brilliantly changed the narrative to suit the new medium.
