Gain The Necessary Experience
Once you have passed the Uniform CPA Exam in its entirety, you will need to meet the experience requirements set forth by the New York State Board of Education, Office of Professions, and the State Board of Regents before getting your CPA license. The Division of Professional Licensing of the New York State Board of Education, Office of Professions will not evaluate your work experience until after you have successfully completed the educational requirements for licensure and taken and passed the Uniform CPA Exam.
a. Gain one year of full-time experience, or the equivalent in part-time work, in the accounting field. Full-time work experience is defined as a five-day work week consisting of between 35 and 40 hours. To be acceptable for New York State licensing purposes, part-time work experience is defined as no fewer than 20 hours per workweek. This will count as one week of full-time experience for every two weeks worked.
b. Make sure the experience meets the requirements. Acceptable experience involves the provision of accounting services or consultation. Candidates must exercise skills related to:
- Accounting
- Financial or tax consulting
All work must be performed under the supervision of a CPA licensed in a U.S. jurisdiction or a public accountant who is licensed to practice in New York State. Work that counts toward the experience requirement may be performed at:
- A public accounting firm
- An educational institution
- A private industrial firm or organization
Affording Student Loan Payments And Post Graduation Salary
Can I afford to attend NYU? In the end, the answer comes down a determination if you will earn enough to comfortably pay back a student loan with your post graduation salary. This is an extremely important point to consider. In order to afford student loan payments and still meet all your other costs of living, it is recommended not to borrow more than you can pay back using 10% of your monthly income earned after graduation. If you’re considering attending New York University, you need to carefully consider if it will be realistic to make the post graduation loan payments based on your expected salary.
Using the 10% of salary threshold, an annual income of $168,689.76 would be needed to afforda $1,405.75 monthly payment in the example $147,336.00 loan modeled above. You will need to determine if it is at all realistic that you will be earning this type of salary after graduation. This assumes a loan payback over 10 years. Who Pays For The Free
The state will increase spending on higher education to cover the cost of the program. The governor’s office said it expects it to cost $163 million in the first year, before it’s fully phased in.
SUNY and CUNY will not be expected to pick up any of the cost for at least the first four years. A special part of the legislation protects the state’s investment in the colleges for that time period. A SUNY spokeswoman said the school does not expect to see any revenue losses under the Excelsior Scholarship because of that protection.

Get Your New York Cpa License
After passing the Uniform CPA Exam and fulfilling the experience requirement, you will be ready to submit your New York State CPA license application. Verify completion of all requirements for licensure in New York:
a. Checklist
- Earn a bachelors degree or higher by completing an accounting program that consists of at least 150 undergraduate semester hours.
