Should Everyone Go To College
- Read in app
What do you plan to do after high school? Do you plan to go to college, take a gap year, start a training program, begin working or something else?
Do your parents, classmates and teachers support your plan? Have they helped guide you toward your post-high school goals? Or have you mostly had to figure them out on your own?
In The Misguided Priorities of Our Educational System, Oren Cass writes that the United States spends a disproportionate amount on college-bound students and much less on those who seek an alternative path:
Students, read the entire article, then tell us:
Do you think everyone should go to college? Or should our society offer students more alternatives to higher education? Why?
Is what Mr. Cass describes in this Op-Ed article true in your school? Is it mostly focused on preparing students for college by, for example, emphasizing academic achievement, providing college counselors, offering trips to college campuses and giving application help? Is there any support for students who dont plan to attend college? Or are they mostly on their own in figuring out what they will do after high school?
Mr. Cass writes, We spend too much money on college students and not enough on everyone else. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

Affording Student Loan Payments And Post Graduation Salary
Can I afford to attend NYU? In the end, the answer comes down a determination if you will earn enough to comfortably pay back a student loan with your post graduation salary. This is an extremely important point to consider. In order to afford student loan payments and still meet all your other costs of living, it is recommended not to borrow more than you can pay back using 10% of your monthly income earned after graduation. If you’re considering attending New York University, you need to carefully consider if it will be realistic to make the post graduation loan payments based on your expected salary.
Using the 10% of salary threshold, an annual income of $168,689.76 would be needed to afforda $1,405.75 monthly payment in the example $147,336.00 loan modeled above. You will need to determine if it is at all realistic that you will be earning this type of salary after graduation. This assumes a loan payback over 10 years. You can change the terms of this example loan using the student loan calculator below.

The state will increase spending on higher education to cover the cost of the program. The governor’s office said it expects it to cost $163 million in the first year, before it’s fully phased in.
SUNY and CUNY will not be expected to pick up any of the cost for at least the first four years. A special part of the legislation protects the state’s investment in the colleges for that time period. A SUNY spokeswoman said the school does not expect to see any revenue losses under the Excelsior Scholarship because of that protection.
Primary And Secondary Education
The New York City public school system is the largest in the United States. More than 1.1 million students are taught in more than 1,700 public schools with a budget of nearly $25 billion. According to Census Data, NYC spent $19,076 each year per student in 2013, more than any other state compared to the national average of $10,560. Per student spending has continued to increase.
Among New York City public high schools are selective specialized schools.
A small portion of land that is between Pelham and Pelham Bay Park, with a total of 35 houses, is a part of the Bronx, but is cut off from the rest of the borough due to the way the county boundaries were established the New York City government pays for the residents’ children to go to Pelham Union Free School District schools, including Pelham Memorial High School, since that is more cost effective than sending school buses to take the students to New York City schools. This arrangement has been in place since 1948. As of 1997 one student at Pelham Memorial and five students in elementary and middle school lived in this section, and New York City paid Pelham School District $15,892.86 per year for the high school student and $8,650.08 per year for the other students.
