What To Pack For New York No Matter The Season

Your camera and its charger. A good DSLR makes a huge difference for taking good photos although phones are catching up steadily!

I use the Nikon D3300, which Ive had for some years now. Its one of the better low-end DSLRs and I absolutely love the photo quality. If youre more into photos, consider purchasing camera with a wide angle lens.

An umbrella. Its best not to get caught in the rain, so bring your own umbrella with you, so you dont end up buying ugly plastic ponchos like many tourists do. Luckily, there are typically many awnings to duck underneath!

Plug & Converter. If youre coming from anywhere but North America or Japan, you need the right plug for the US. In America, we use the two pronged American outlet, however if youre bringing heavy-duty hardware , its good to have a converter to ensure that you dont fry your electronics.

I recently bought a new adapter for my travels and I love having two USB ports for my phone and other electronics to charge simultaneously with my computer.

Phone charger and a battery bank for your phone. Youre probably planning to be sharing videos/photos and using your phone for google maps. Dont forget your charger as using data, location data, and finding wifi can burn through your phone battery.

Your pajamas of course.

Socks and underwear. In general, a pair per day is a good general idea although one spare is good in case your shoes get wet.

What To Wear In New York In Summer

Many New Yorkers escape to the beach in the summer, leaving the city extremely laid back. The temperature spikes in July with an average of 76°F / 25°C, but this can fluctuate and decrease at night, so youll need to be prepared if youre out all day. That said, it can get very hot and humid in the city in the summer, and sometimes it stays hot into the night.

On top, think cropped camis, deep V halters, and blouses. Pair them with equally cool and comfy maxi skirts, culottes, and light denims. Playsuits and jumpsuits can be great, but avoid tight body cons of any design, as its icky to get sticky when youre on the go for hours.

Easy denim with gorgeous sandals and a breezy top will be your uniform. Add dresses or skirts to the mix to keep cool.

Mid-summer Manhattanites are AC-crazy. This is the case for pretty much everywhere indoors, but is particularly pertinent when youre spending the day in and out of multiple freezing shops.

A light outer layer is essential I opt for thin trench coats as they are equally cost/heat/trend effective, but a crew neck sweater or hoodie will do the job.

Mix Patterns And Fabrics

Just like colors work every which way, so do patterns and fabric. When in New York, be brave. Be bold. Be daring. Its no longer uncommon to dress odd, adds Greenawalt, unlike when I was growing up, when it was all about fitting in. So wear lace with leather, chiffon with pleats. Mix floral prints with pin stripes or polka dots, have two intricate designs clash, layer one on top of another. True, girls have an easier time pulling this off, but womens magazine have tried to limit this trend. If you wear a patterned bottom, have something muted on top, they say, or mix different textures but of the same color. Blah. No. Boring. It takes just one subway stop and a close observation of those who step on and off to realize it doesnt translate here.

Pretty much anything goes here, concurs Elle Fure, fashion blogger who also works at Vogue. No other city in the world embraces novelty the way New York does. It encourages you to experiment, to set yourself apart from everyone else trying to set themselves apart. Its a city that really understands that style stems from individuality and thereby fosters it.

Dress Like A Photographer

No professional female photojournalist had access to the battlefields or front lines during World War I, according to Englands Imperial War Museums, and Christina Broom was no exception.

Nevertheless, Broom hailed as Britains first female photojournalist and her colleagues took some of the most compelling photographs of the era. Broom extensively photographed the womens rights movement in the U.K., and her photos of the homefront provide us with a uniquely feminine perspective on the toll of war.

Here, Broom poses next to a display of her photographs in a picture taken by her daughter.

Locals wear such a wide range of things that packing might be easier if you keep in mind the things you should avoid wearing in New York City. It’s rare to see New Yorkers walking around in flip-flops, stiletto heels and other footwear that offers little support. Walking long distances is normal, so locals wear shoes that don’t fall apart or hurt after half a block. Clothing that looks dated, like pleated shorts or shirts with shoulder pads, sticks out too.

Perhaps the one item that screams “tourist” more than any other is a New York souvenir T-shirt or sweatshirt, like those printed with the popular I Heart New York logo. By all means, buy one to take home, but don’t wear it on the city streets. If you want to wear something printed with a New York-specific message, pick a shirt or hat printed with the logo of one of the city’s sports teams. Wearing a Mets or Knicks shirt won’t tip everyone off to the fact that you’re a tourist.

Are New Yorkers Unfriendly

Depends. Most people are busy, a lot are stressed out, but for the most part people are nice. If you ask for directions, people almost always will help you out.

If your idea of rudeness is strangers not saying hello, then prepare to be disappointed. Unfortunately, its not practical to say hi to everyone if there are 8 million other people. Other than that, New Yorkers are generally decent people.

What To Wear In New York City In Fall Or Spring

Quick summary of what to pack for spring or fall in New York City for one week.

  • Peacoat/Light jacket
  • 1-2 pairs of Jeans
  • Hat, scarf, and gloves depending on weather .

I have jackets for every season. My fall and spring jacket for New York City is a medium weight wool peacoat that I can fit a sweater underneath for winter. Although some people would wear a peacoat year-round, I typically save my peacoat for fall from October onwards or before April.

You can always wear an open peacoat in September or April if youre concerned about packing too many clothes for New York. I sometimes find that this can be too warm.

When its less chilly, I often wear a light jacket around New York City . Im not that prone to getting cold, but this works well for March/April shoulder season in New York City.

1-2 pairs of jeans. Luckily, jeans dont get too dirty after one day of wear and theyre perfect for when theres a slight chill in the air, but you want a jacket. You dont need to plan to pack a lot for spring in New York City.

A mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve t-shirts. New York City is colder towards the end of fall and early spring than a lot of people realize. I recommend bringing maybe 2 of each depending on how cold you get and the weather then. You can always layer with a sweater underneath your jacket.

When In Doubt Wear Black

New Yorkers are known for embracing neutralsblack most obviously, but also shades of navy, ivory, and gray. Neutrals instantly make even the most experimental silhouettes sleek and wearable. Plus, when your closets full of them, getting dressed is a snap . Try Helmut Lang, Theory,Alexander Wang, and Rag & Bone to check out how exciting neutrals can be. Mixing different textures and playing with proportion is the NYC secret to keeping non-color from looking drab.

What Do People Wear To Visit New York City

Pack the right clothes for your visit to New York City.

Question: What do a bikini, a parka and flannel pajamas have in common? Answer: You could see them all being worn by occupants of a single subway car in New York City. But despite New York’s reputation as a haven for nonconformists, the majority of people you pass on a visit to the Big Apple will be dressed in normal clothing. That doesn’t mean they’ll dress the same way people in your hometown dress, though. Blend in by dressing in a way that’s equal parts comfortable and cool.
