White Woman Who Called 911 On Black Bird
A white woman who in a 2020 incident that went viral has lost a lawsuit accusing her former employer of illegally firing her and making her out to be a racist.
U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams on Wednesday rejected Amy Cooper’s claims that her former employer, investment management company Franklin Templeton, defamed her when it repeatedly said the firm did not tolerate racism.
Abrams further said Amy Cooper had failed to prove that she was fired due to her race or gender and without the kind of investigation that had once been conducted on allegations of another employee’s misconduct.
Amy Cooper lost her job after a video was shared on social media showing her calling 911 on bird-watcher Christian Cooper and telling police that an “African American man” had threatened her life and the life of her dog.

S To 1950s: Moses Rehabilitation
In 1934, Republican Fiorello La Guardia was elected mayor of New York City. He unified the five park-related departments then in existence. Newly appointed city parks commissioner Robert Moses was given the task of cleaning up the park, and he summarily fired many of the Tammany-era staff. At the time, the lawns were filled with weeds and dust patches, while many trees were dying or already dead. Monuments had been vandalized, equipment and walkways were broken, and ironwork was rusted. Moses’s biographer Robert Caro later said, “The once beautiful Mall looked like a scene of a wild party the morning after. Benches lay on their backs, their legs jabbing at the sky…”
Renovations in the 1940s and 1950s include a restoration of the Harlem Meer completed in 1943, and a new boathouse completed in 1954. Moses began construction on several other recreational features in Central Park, such as playgrounds and ball fields. One of the more controversial projects proposed during this time was a 1956 dispute over a parking lot for Tavern in the Green. The controversy placed Moses, an urban planner known for displacing families for other large projects around the city, against a group of mothers who frequented a wooded hollow at the site of a parking lot. Though opposed by the parents, Moses approved the destruction of part of the hollow. Demolition work commenced after Central Park was closed for the night and was only halted after the threat of a lawsuit.

A New York Judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by the woman who went viral in 2020 for calling 911 on a Black birdwatcher in Central Park, ending a wrongful termination and defamation case the woman had launched against her former employer, Franklin Templeton.
U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams of the Southern District of New York said Amy Cooper, who became known as Central Park Karen, did not present substantial evidence that she was fired by the global investment firm because of her race and gender.
This argument merits little attention. None of Franklin Templetons public statements made any mention of Plaintiffs race, Abrams wrote in her opinion.
Nor had the company defamed her by condemning the incident when she called police on a Black man who had not threatened her, the judge ruled.
It is well-established that an accusation of bigotry is a protected statement of opinion, rather than a defamatory statement of fact capable of being proven true or false, Abrams wrote.
In viral video in May 2020, Amy Cooper was seen in New Yorks Central Park calling the police on Christian Cooper, who is Black, after the birdwatcher asked her to leash her dog.
Amy Cooper told police that an African American man was threatening her and her dog in Central Park.
She later apologized for the incident, acknowledging she was in the wrong because Christian Cooper had not threatened her and she was supposed to leash her dog there.

Christian Cooper, who has no relation to Amy Cooper, told NBC News at the time that he asked her to put her dog back on a leash, which is the policy for the Ramble area of Central Park. Amy Cooper later told NBC New York that she had overreacted and was sorry for the incident.
The video of the May 25, 2020, incident was seen by millions on the internet within hours of being posted, however, and sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for Amy Cooper to be held to account over her actions as they dubbed her the “Central Park Karen.” The video was also taken the same day a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd, prompting global protests about racial injustice and police brutality.

In her lawsuit, Amy Cooper had argued that the company’s statements suggested Franklin Templeton had access to undisclosed facts justifying its position that were not clear from the viral video of the incident.
However, Abrams wrote that “nothing about Defendants May 26 Statement suggested that the opinions contained therein rested on facts undisclosed to the audience.”
The contents of the viral video, as well as the dialogue surrounding it both in the media and on social media, were already matters of public knowledge, the judge said, rendering the defendants statements inactionable as pure opinion.”
