Shelter Island has become more popular recently, following the renovation of an 1872 inn with 37 rooms suddenly there is somewhere to stay! This Long Island Beach has summer visitors who rented or owned a house locally or day visitors before that.
It is a small island covering only 27 square miles but offers plenty of things to do.
Get some exercise hiking along the trails, kayaking, cycling or just relax with some birdwatching.
If you are simply going to relax and take in the sun, its a fine spot to do just that there will be no one to argue with you.
The Us Cities At Risk Of Flooding
Rising sea levels pose a serious threat to cites like Boston, New York and Miami Beach. So what are they doing to protect themselves?
Tropical storm Harvey may have bared its teeth at Houston, but other cities in the US have felt the pangs of nervousness. Several cities are vulnerable to the fiercer storms and sea level rise that are being fueled by climate change.
Cities, by their very nature, struggle during flood situations. Water that would have been soaked up by grass and other vegetation washes off the concrete and asphalt of urban areas and, if not properly diverted away, can inundate homes.
Add in, as in Houstons case, lax rules around property zoning and a federal flood insurance system that repeatedly pays out for damage to poorly situated houses, and its clear cities have much work to do to cope with the changes upon them.
Harvey brought a huge amount of rainfall, but cities now face flooding threats even without a major storm. Rare events are going to become more common in the future strictly due to sea level rise, said William Sweet, an oceanographer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .
We are already seeing flooding in property and the streets in Charleston, Norfolk and Miami on sunny days, driven by the tides. That is a looming crisis that is only going to grow more severe over time.
So which cities are at risk and what are they doing about the threat?
Fort Tilden Beach Queens
Its only on the weekends in the summer that this beach in Queens shows much sign of human activity, even though it is so close to hugely populated areas.
There are ferries that take visitors close to the shore and beach buses made for the job.
There is little in the way of infrastructure and no lifeguards, so you are on your own.
You will need to take your own picnic with you and some visitors really do make a meal of that.
The beachs appeal is its seclusion, but you need to plan properly if you are to get everything you want from the place.

Coney Island Beach Brooklyn
As one of New York’s most popular beaches, Coney Island has it all. This beach at the tip of Brooklyn is easily accessible by subway trains and has two amusement parks featuring the Cyclone roller coaster and a boardwalk, and the iconic Nathan’s Famous Hot dogs. The original Nathan’s Coney Island restaurant that opened in 1916 is still at the corner of Surf and Stillwell, home of the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest that takes place on July 4th weekend.
While the beach is still the main attraction, events like the famous Mermaid Parade in June draw crowds from all across the city. The parade is the largest art parade in the United States and celebrates the arrival of summer.
At the nearby New York Aquarium, you may not find mermaids, but you’ll definitely get your fill of marine life. The aquarium, now part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, is the oldest aquarium in the United States and features 350 marine species, including 18 species of sharks from around the world. Regardless of the weather outside, the aquarium is open year-round.
Water Purity And Availability
New York City is supplied with drinking water by the protected Catskill Mountainswatershed. As a result of the watershed’s integrity and undisturbed natural water filtration system, New York is one of only four major cities in the United States the majority of whose drinking water is pure enough not to require purification by water treatment plants. The city’s municipal water system is the largest in the United States, moving over one billion gallons of water per day. The Croton Watershed north of the city is undergoing construction of a $3.2 billion water purification plant to augment New York City’s water supply by an estimated 290 million gallons daily, representing a greater than 20% addition to the city’s current availability of water. The ongoing expansion of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3, an integral part of the New York City water supply system, is the largest capital construction project in the city’s history, with segments serving Manhattan and the Bronx completed, and with segments serving Brooklyn and Queens planned for construction in 2020. In 2018, New York City announced a $1 billion investment to protect the integrity of its water system and to maintain the purity of its unfiltered water supply.

Orchard Beach And Promenade The Bronx
A lot of New York City visitors don’t realize that the Bronx in the north part of the city has its own beaches. The best among them is Orchard Beach that features a lovely promenade along the waterfront.
Located in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronxwhich is accessible by subway by taking the 6 train to its northernmost stopyou can access this public area by taking the Bx12 and Bx5 buses during the summer or the Bx29 to the City Island Circle in the winter.
Midland Beach Staten Island
This Staten Island beach is fairly inaccessible but some beachgoers regard that as an advantage.
It serves the local neighborhood primarily, with plenty of activities going on handball and shuffleboard are two of the favorites.
The wide boardwalk encourages cyclists and people who want to jog or take a relaxed stroll.
The only way to get to Midland is to go by car or use local transport, which means taking two buses.
Though its not for everyone, it means you are guaranteed relative peace because it will be largely people from the neighborhood hanging out there.

New York City’s beaches opened Memorial Day weekend, and lifeguards remain on duty through Sunday, September 12, 2021. The city prohibits swimming outside those times because lifeguards are not on duty. Long Island and other area beaches included here are generally open through Labor Day.
Three Beach Areas On Staten Island

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and Beach span two and a half miles in the South Beach and Midland Beach neighborhoods of Staten Island. Filled with plenty of art, nearby facilities, and gorgeous beaches with relatively smaller crowds, this beach is a great destination for families visiting the city.
This destination can be accessed by taking the R train to the 86th Street Station. Here, you’ll have to take the S53 bus to Sand Lane and Hyland Boulevard, then transfer to the S52 Bus to Father Capodanno Boulevard and Sand Lane, where the beach boardwalk starts. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the beach from Manhattan.
Another great beach is located in Wolfe’s Pond Park, which offers visitors the chance to explore the nearby wildlife preserve and open space of the park as well as the beach. You can take the S78 to Tottenville at Cornelia and Highland Boulevard or the Staten Island Transit subway to Huguenot Avenue to get here.
Another epic park on Staten Island, Great Kills Park, features four beaches: New Dorp Beach Cedar Grove Beach Oakwood Beach and Fox Beach. You can take the S76 to Oakwood Beach and then the S86 to Ebbitts Street and Cedar Grove Avenue for access to Great Kills Park.

Main Beach East Hampton
Along with Cooper’s Beach, Main Beach has regularly topped the list of the nation’s best beaches. This oasis in East Hampton is within walking distance to many accommodations in the area.
Main Beach offers bathrooms and lifeguards. At the Pavilion, relax in the shade, find a locker to store items, get refreshments, and grab a bite to eat at the snack bar. There are plenty of shops and restaurants on Main Street to explore, as well as local attractions like Home Sweet Home Museum and an old-fashioned windmill at Old Hook Mill.
If you are staying in the area, bike to the beach to avoid the hefty parking fee of $30. Kayak, surfboard, and paddleboard rentals are available from outfitters in town some even offer lessons if you decide to hone your skills on the water.
Jacob Riis Beach Queens
The Scene: Nicknamed the “People’s Beach,” this shore just west of Rockaway is enjoying a resurgence thanks to its vibe and out-of-the-city feel. Expect lots of 20-somethings, along with families, many of whom pitch tents and stay the whole day.
Attractions and Bathrooms: Managed by the National Park Service, Jacob Riis is home to an Art Deco bathhouse that now houses the aforementioned Bazaar. There’s also golf, ball courts, and great kite flying, thanks to the ocean breeze. As for bathrooms, there are two on the East Beach and one on the Westall fairly spacious and clean. Want to stay the night? Try glamping at nearby Fort Tilden via Camp Rockaway.
Food: The eats at the Bazaar are artisanal and expensive, but delicious. Think Ample Hills ice cream, homemade barbecue, and fresh seafood, plus alcohol. You can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas here, but there’s a limited supply.
Cost: The beach is FREE, but there’s a $20 parking fee if you drive.
Operating Hours: Daily 6am-10pm
Getting There: If you’re a masochist, you can take the 2 subway train to the Q35 bus. For the rest of us, the ferry from downtown Manhattan’s Pier 11 is the best option, though 2021 service has yet to start. You can also catch an NYC Ferry to a free shuttle bus or the aforementioned Q35.

Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area
Those who scoff at New Jersey are missing out. Sandy Hook, a Gateway National Park at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore, has something for everyone: wide, sandy beaches manned by an army of lifeguards fishing and nature walks history and the ever-popular nude beach Gunnison. Its a 45-minute ride on the Seastreak ferry from downtown Manhattan to the beach, with views of the city skyline the whole way.
