Avid readers of magazines like The New Yorker or newspapers like the Wall Street Journal may still keep individual subscriptions for full access to archives or to show support for their favorite publications directly.

But at $10 per month, Apples service might be attractive to casual readers who want to peruse a few articles each month from a variety of news sources.

The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times will be part of the service, Apple announced on Monday. The financial news-focused Wall Street Journal will hire reporters to produce more general news content, the Journal has reported. A monthly digital subscription to the Wall Street Journal costs $39 per month.

Magazines from Conde Nast and Hearst, including The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, are also included with Apples revamped news offering. They will be among the 300 magazines available with Apple News+, along with Wired and National Geographic.

The two publishing houses, along with Meredith Corp, which publishes People and InStyle magazines, formed an unlimited magazine-reading app called Texture that Apple bought in March 2018.

It was unclear whether Apple News+ will include both the digital and print content of the participating magazines, or complete access to newspapers content.

The New York Times, the largest U.S. newspaper by subscribers, is unlikely be part of Apples news service.

Wsj Plans To Stick With Apple News+ Because It Attracts A Different Audience

The Wall Street Journal is planning to continue its partnership with Apple News, according to recent comments by News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson. This comes after the New York Times announced last month that it would leave the Apple News platform over disagreements with Apple.

As noted by the New York Post today, Thomson made these comments during the companys recent quarterly earnings call. Thomson believes that the Apple News+ deal allows the Wall Street Journal to attract new categories of readers that it hopes will transition to a paid direct subscription over time:

That Apple News partnership allows us to focus on that tier of content and bring in a significantly new audience that we would hope to graduate to a paid WSJ subscription over time. And it is a genuinely different audience. Its actually, of late, more women than men. For The Wall Street Journal itself, its more men than women.

The Wall Street Journal has been one of the few major publications to join the Apple News+ subscription service. This allows users to pay Apple directly for a collection of premium news sources and magazines for $10 per month. Other publications such as the Washington Post and New York Times have resisted Apple News+.

New York Times CEO Mark Thompson also remarked in an interview last year that other papers should be hesitant to join Apple News+ for two primary reasons: lost subscriber revenue and giving Apple too much power in the news industry.

How To I Add Magazines To My Favorites/my Magazines

On the iPhone/iPad: Go to the Apple News+ tab and press either Browse the Catalog or one of the topics at the top. Scroll to the magazine you want and tap Follow below the cover. A pop-up appears to confirm that you are following that magazine, and it will appear in the My Magazines section.

Alternatively, press the Following tab at the bottom of the Apple News interface. Enter the name of the magazine youd like to favorite in the Channels, Topics, and Stories search bar at the top. When you see the name of the magazine pop up in the search results, press the heart icon to the right to favorite it.

On the Mac: Click on the News+ icon in the sidebar. Click either Browse the Catalog or one of the topics at the top. Scroll to the magazine you want and tap the blue Follow button at the lower right of the cover. How Do I Delete Downloaded Magazines

Get this: You cant. Magazines will automatically delete after 30 days or if storage space is limited. If think your storage space is limited, put a lot of thought into whether or not you want the latest issue of National Geographic on your device. Keep in mind that Apple also doesnt even tell you the file sizes of issues.

Is Apple News Plus A Good Deal

Times Square

Apples $9.99-a-month news service is great if you like magazines and use Apple devices, but it leaves a lot of people out. Apple News+ is great if you love magazines and reading on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. But its very locked down, requiring you to only read that content within Apple News on one of those products.

Unlimited Access To Everything

I think this is the feature that most new subscribers will be caught off guard by. You dont get access to every piece of paid content in the News app just a lot of it.

Some publications still want you to sign up for an individual subscription for their service. And some sources offer some of their content with Apple News+, but not all of it.

Be sure to check if your favorite publications are included in Apple News+ before you sign up!

The New York Times Ends Apple News Partnership And Pulls All Articles

The New York Times today announced that it is pulling out of Apple News, as the service does not “align with its strategy of building direct relationships with paying readers.”

Starting today, articles from The New York Times will no longer show up in the Apple News app. The news site says that Apple has given it “little in the way of direct relationships with readers” and “little control over the business.” Rather than allowing its articles on Apple News, The New York Times wants to drive readers to its own website and app.

“Core to a healthy model between The Times and the platforms is a direct path for sending those readers back into our environments, where we control the presentation of our report, the relationships with our readers, and the nature of our business rules,” Meredith Kopit Levien, chief operating officer, wrote in a memo to employees. “Our relationship with Apple News does not fit within these parameters.”

In a statement, an Apple spokesperson said that The New York Times only provided a few Apple News stories a day and that Apple News will still provide readers with trusted information from thousands of other publishers. “We are also committed to supporting quality journalism through the proven business models of advertising, subscriptions, and commerce,” said the spokesperson.

Apple’s News Subscription Likely Won’t Include New York Times

New York Times CEO Mark Thompson tells Reuters that relying on platforms like Apple’s can be troublesome.

Apple’s new digital news service won’t be welcomed by everyone. The New York Times, one of the biggest and most prestigious newspapers in the US, will likely not be featured in Apple’s subscription news service, expected to be announced on Monday.

“We tend to be quite leery about the idea of almost habituating people to find our journalism somewhere else,” Mark Thompson, CEO of New York Times, told Reuters. “We’re also generically worried about our journalism being scrambled in a kind of Magimix with everyone else’s journalism.”

Thompson reportedly warned that publishing through third-party distribution can be risky for publishers who might lose control of their content.

Neither The New York Times nor Apple immediately responded to requests for comment.

Apple’s launch event will take place on Monday in the Steve Jobs Theater at the company’s Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, at 10 a.m. PT. The iPhone maker is expected to announce its new Netflix-like streaming service, a subscription news service and possibly Apple credit cards.

The paid digital news service is likely a premium version of its current News app, which will allow users to view content from different publishers. Publishers have reportedly been hesitant to sign on because Apple would take 50 percent of the revenue from the service.

The Challenge Of Facebook & Co

With Apple News, Apple has entered the worldof news with a service that is read by 85 million people. As opposed to Google,Facebook and Twitter who were criticised for their sometimes negative influence over the spreadof information, Apple has so far avoided controversy.

One big reason is that while the others rely on algorithms to pick headlines, Apple uses humans. Experts claim that, when it comes to fake news, AI is not up for the job. AI cant understand fake news, because AI cant write. So, who can?

Renowned Publications Are In

In the US there are over 300 magazinesincluded in Apple News Plus, across a number of categories, includinglifestyle, entertainment, news and more. Apple has made deals with most of the major magazine publishers like Conde Nast, Hearst, Time Inc. and Meredith.

Renowned publications such as Vogue, National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal have come on board.

Heres a selection of participating titles:

  • Newspapers: The Wall StreetJournal, The Los Angeles Times
  • News & Politics: Time, The NewYorker, The Atlantic
  • Finance & Business: Forbes,Money, Inc. Magazine
  • Lifestyle: ELLE, Vogue, InStyle,Cosmopolitan, GQ
  • Science and Tech: Wired, NationalGeographic, CNET
  • Entertainment: Vanity Fair, RollingStone, People, OK
  • Sports: Runners World, SportsIllustrated

New York Times Leaves Apple News Over A Lack Of Reader Connection

The New York Times is pulling itself out from Apple News, citing a need to fight for “readers’ attention and dollars” against not only other news organizations, but also tech companies like Apple.

On Monday, stories from The New York Times stopped appearing as part of the curated Apple News feed. The disagreement also makes The New York Times the first major media company to pull out from Apple News altogether.

In an explanatory piece on its website, the publication claims it has made acquiring more subscribers a key business goal, but that Apple News has provided it “little in the way of direct relationships with readers and little control over the business.” It instead wants to push users to its website and mobile app to gain subscribers and “fund quality journalism.”

“Core to a healthy model between The Times and the platforms is a direct path for sending those readers back into our environments, where we control the presentation of our report, the relationships with our readers, and the nature of our business rules,” wrote COO Meredith Kopit Levien in a memo to NYT employees. “Our relationship with Apple News does not fit within these parameters.”

Acknowledging the existence of the Apple News app’s 125 million users, the NYT offers the view that the advertising revenue it provides is underwhelming, while at the same time complaining that Apple took a 30% cut of subscriptions sold within the app.

Two Important Players Are Missing

Vacation in New York City, New York

Just as with iTunes early day efforts to getrecord labels on board, Apples approach of publishers has had mixed results.Even though Apple was able to get some renowned publications on board, it missed out on deals with the Washington Post and NewYork Times.

In an interview with Reuters Mark Thompson, CEO of New York Times, explained his reasons not to participate as follows: We tend to be quite leery about the idea of almost habituating people to find our journalism somewhere else. Were also generically worried about our journalism being scrambled in a kind of Magimix with everyone elses journalism.

For Apple this is a big loss, because the New York Times is the biggest U.S. newspaper, with approximately 4 million subscribers.

There are pros and cons regarding Apple News Plus. Many are convinced that participating is a good idea, but how does participation look like? Are they all in? Let me give you an example based on the Wall Street Journal.

What Is Apple News+

Apple News+ is a new subscription-based addition to the existing Apple News app for iOS and macOS. While the free Apple News app largely emphasizes straight news, Apple News+ emphasizes longer-tailed magazine content, although youll also get access to content from sites like The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times that would normally be behind paywalls.

Some magazines in Apple News+ have nifty features like animated live covers that enhance the magazine-reading experience for the digital age, but a surprising number of magazines on Apple News+ are little more than PDFs.

Facts Publishers Should Know About Apple News Plus

Apple launched its new subscription service called Apple News Plus in March 2019 in the US and Canada. And you probably know that the company plans to launch this service also in the UK and Australia in autumn 2019.

As is often the case with Apple announcements the reactions after the launch ranged from a disappointment to .

Many publishers are very uncertain about this topic. Thats why I want to bring some clarity.

Keep in mind that The New York Times had to be a part of Apple News+, the $10-per-month subscription service the tech giant launched last year that was based on its 2018 acquisition of Texture. Apple reportedly keeps half of all subscription revenue from that service, with publishers splitting the remaining half based on proportional engagement.

The New York Times CEO Mark Thompson told Reuters last year, “We tend to be quite leery about the idea of almost habituating people to find our journalism somewhere else.”

Other national outlets like The Washington Post also opted out of Apple News+, although the Post still sells in-app subscriptions through Apple News, which entitles the Mac maker to a cut of those sales. The Wall Street Journaloffers a limited selection of articles within Apple News+. Even official Apple News+ partners like Conde Nast which publishes household names like Vogue, GQ, and Vanity Fair, among others have expressed skepticism regarding the relationship with Apple.

Apple News+ has struggled to gain subscribers, with the subscriber base reportedly stuck around 200,000. At the same time, the free version has garnered criticism from publishers because ad monetization has been extremely poor due to Apple’s emphasis on privacy, which severely limits ad targeting.

Who Should Sign Up For Apple News+

So with all of this in mind, who should subscribe to Apple News+? The answer ultimately comes down to your interests. If youre an avid magazine reader, then this subscription is a no-brainer. Youll get access to tons of sources for a fraction of what youd normally pay, and all of it is digital.

If youre more of a news person, however, then you might want to take some more time to consider before subscribing. Maybe you wont get access to the stories you want, your favorite publications might not be on News+ yet, or you simply might not care to read paid content as much you thought you would. Id recommend signing up and setting a reminder in your phone to cancel in a month so that you can see if its something youll use.

Im a firm believer in the future of news subscriptions like the Apple News+ model, but I think this service needs a bit more for it to be justifiable to the average user.

Last month, Apple rolled out Apple News+ where it aims to offer subscribers an all-you-can-eat subscription to popular magazines and newspapers. Apple is building Apple News+ on its Texture acquisition which offered a similar option to its subscribers.

During its Show Time event, Apple touted that Apple News+ offers subscribers with access to over 300 digital magazines and newspapers. Apple did not list the entire list of publications available on its platforms but it did highlight some of the popular magazines on its service.

If you are looking to subscribe to Apple News+ and are wondering what all magazines and newspapers are available on the service, check out the exhaustive list below. Do note that not all the magazines listed below make use of the rich Apple News format with images, GIFs, and an interactive layout.
