How Much Is A Movie Ticket In New York

Assigned Seats Are Enforced

How much are you willing to pay for a movie ticket? – The (Movie) Question

All three theaters I visited required me to choose my seats while buying tickets, which was pretty standard even before COVID-19. IFC Center enforced social distancing by taping off seats in the auditorium that hadn’t been reserved, while my server at Nitehawk, a dine-in theater, double-checked my ticket to make sure I was in the correct spot.

Although no one at AMC came into my showing of “The Mauritanian” to ensure everyone was seated safely apart, fortunately, my small audience of seven had enough common sense to sit in separate rows. There were also posted signs around the auditorium that if you feel uncomfortable with your reserved spot, you are “free to move to a socially distant seat after the feature presentation starts.”

Get Ready For $30 Movie Tickets

The abysmal new comedy Vacation includes a sequence where Ed Helms and his family go swimming in a Georgia hot spring that turns out to be loaded with human sewage. Just imagine how delightful it would be if you could actually savor that smell that in a movie theater.

Well, lucky New Yorkers are being promised they will be able to actually smell movies that stink like Vacation by the end of the year. The Regal chain just announced that a couple of its Manhattan theaters are being equipped to dispense 4-D effects, which include not only smells but vibrations, wind, fog, rain and lighting effects to enhance movies for a hefty added charge, of course.

New York City moviegoers are going to be in for an incredible cinematic treat later this year, promises Rob Del Moro, Regals chief technical and theater operations officer.

Well, anything you say, Rob. All I know is that a ticket to see Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation in the only US movie theater auditorium equipped for 4-D costs $23.50. Add an additional surcharge for 3-D, and higher base ticket prices in New York, and youre talking about a ticket approaching $30.

Movies that intentionally stink up theaters date back to at least 1929, when the manager of a Times Square theater showing The Broadway Melody had equipment installed to spray perfume into the auditorium during musical numbers. Unfortunately, the scents lingered for weeks afterwards.

This latest cash grab really stinks.

History Of Regal Theatres

Regal cinemas as its known today started only in 1989. No longer does Regal stand on its own, but rather its joined together with two other chains Edwards Theaters and United Artists Theaters. All three cinema brands are owned and operated by a single parent companyRegal Entertainment Group.

Edwards Theaters was founded in 1930 by William James Edwards Jr. It was a family owned business primarily run in California. After achieving magnificent popularity amongst movie goers, they Edwards Theaters were able to host, for a brief period, prime time movie premieres for a few of the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

Unfortunately, Edwards passed away in 1997 and was succeeded by his son, William James Edwards III. By that time of his death, there were over 90 Edwards cinemas in the country, boasting well over 500 screens. His successor was quick to announce a massive expansion, intending to double the size of the company.

However, it was not to be realized. This rushed expansion brought the company to sudden bankruptcy in the year 2000.

United Artists Theaters is closely linked to the United Artists film production company of which Charlie Chaplin himself was a part of. The theater chain was opened in 1924 and was headed by Joseph Schenck.

Originally part of UA Studios, the company began to drift away and become its own company. By the 1970s it was a part of the United Artists Communications group.

Military Student And Other Discounts

Many Regal Cinemas offer exclusive discounts for both active military personnel and students with valid IDs. Unfortunately, Regal arent too keen on sharing which locations offer them, or specifically how much the discounts are.

Browsing their FAQ page leads us to the following answer:

For student and military discount availability, please enter your zip code under the Find Tickets and Showtimes section of the homepage. Scroll down to the theatre you plan to visit, and click on the theatre name. At that point, locate the movie you are inquiring about and click on the gold showtime. The page that is presented will provide you with pricing information, as well as student and military discount availability.

Not much help, unfortunately! We recommend you call up a few of the Regals near you and confirm over the phone or in person whether they provide discounts for military or students, whichever youre after.

On the other hand, Regal are proud to be part of the worldwide move to offer extremely discounted tickets on select days at select locations. Here is just a few example of the discounted days:

Buying your movie tickets online might make things really convenient, but that convenience will cost you. Currently that fee will cost you $1.42 per ticket.

How Much Is An Average Cinema Ticket In Manhattan

I’m staying close to Times Sq and I was wondering how much the average cinema ticket is. I’m a huge cinema fan and I’d love to watch an American film in the country it is produced. I saw some article that a ticket is $20 which sounds excessive but I suppose proportionate to the average central London cinema ticket. Can anyone confirm?

$12-14.50 in Manhattan depending on theater and time of day. More for 3D and IMAX.

Times Square it will be closer to $15-$17.

Shawn

I’ve only been to the Regal and AMC theatres across the street from each other on 42nd St. From memory, I think Shawnito’s $15 or so for regular movies, up to $20 for 3D ones. I like the AMC’s amenities a bit better, larger theatres, better seats.

If you go to an AMC theater before noon, tickets are discounted, $8.75 instead of the usual $14.75. There’s two AMC theaters close to Times Square, one at 34th and 8th and another by Lincoln Center. The only problem is you’d have to wake up and go to a show before noon 🙂

Also, depending on what time of the year you visit, keep an eye out for the Tribeca Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Rooftop Films, and any number of other film series that might have special events or free screenings.

Matinees are the best way to save a few bucks. Some theaters have even better rates for the first showing of the day as well.

Theater How Much Did Your Seat Cost

  • Read in app

By David Leonhardt

AS they file into their orchestra seats just before 8 p.m., there is little to suggest that they have not all paid the same price. They are about to watch the same Broadway show, after all, and they will all be sitting in the most expensive section of the theater.

But tucked in their pockets or folded in their hands, their tickets tell a different story, one that many producers would like to keep somewhat quiet. Sitting just feet from one another, sometimes in the same row, are theatergoers who have paid dizzyingly varied prices for their seats.

With the help of the Internet, many people are buying tickets with discounts similar to those at TKTS, but doing so well in advance and avoiding the Times Square booth’s famously long lines. Others continue to pay the list price at the box office or slightly more at Telecharge or Ticketmaster. A small number of people are even paying the theater two or three times the normal price to secure prime seats at the last minute, a service that was once available only from scalpers.

This revolution in variable pricing has changed the business of Broadway. Outside of a few well-known discount sources, people long paid the same price for the same seats. But now the purchase of a theater ticket has come to resemble the purchase of an airline ticket. For complete control — the ability to choose your seat and the date you sit there — you will probably pay top dollar. In most other cases, you can make a deal.
