How Long Is The Musical

A Broadway musical usually lasts between 2 and 2.5 hours. It is divided into acts and there are breaks in between, so you can go out to the restroom and stretch your legs without missing a minute of the play.

Knowing the duration of the show you have chosen is essential for you to be able to organize the plan of activities you will do that day.

How To Buy Broadway Tickets At The Theater Box Office

In my experience, it does not seem to me to be the most advisable option. There are several reasons for this, which I will explain below:

  • Buying tickets for a Broadway musical at the box office means that you will have to buy them when you land in New York, so you will have to adapt to the theater’s schedule, travel there and wait in a long line to buy them.

  • This means that you will lose valuable time of your trip to New York that you could be spending touring the city or visiting some of its best museums instead of waiting in line at the doors of a theater.

  • Getting tickets at the box office will be months later than when you could have bought them at home, there will be far fewer options and perhaps at an exorbitant price. Or they will be sold out given the high demand for Broadway musicals.

What Determines Off Broadway Or Off

Off-Broadway Week / NBC New York

There are hundreds of other professional theaters across the country as well as in New York City that are not considered Broadway but that produce equally spectacular shows and musicals. For instance, Off Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theaters are scattered around Manhattan and NYC, especially in Greenwich Village.

Off Broadway Theaters typically hold seating for 99-499 people, whereas Off-Off Broadway Theaters hold under 99 people.

Historically, the Off Broadway movement began in the 1950s when theatergoers were disturbed by the high price of a ticket to see a show or musical. Theater lovers were looking for a less expensive venue to see shows. As a result, some of these Off Broadway venues have become the birthplace of some wonderfully experimental shows that have delighted audiences for years.

One final area where Broadway and Off Broadway shows differentiate is the awards qualifications. Only Broadway shows are eligible for Tony Awards while both can be nominated for Drama Desk Awards. Only Off Broadway can be nominated for Obie Awards, which celebrate the best in only Off-Broadway plays and musicals.

How To Buy Discounted Broadway Musical Tickets

  • The classic way to get discounted Broadway tickets is to wait in line at the red TKTS Booth located on 47th St & 7th Ave. It sells discounted tickets for performances on the same day. You can also download the TKTS app and check which shows have the tickets on sale that day.

In general, the earlier you get to the booth, the better as the tickets do sell out fast, but the blocks of good seats will only be released close to the playing time. You can buy up to six tickets per person at a time. But, there is a $5 – $6 fee per ticket, which is still much lower than the fees on most ticketing websites.

Besides its flagship location in Times Square, TDF operates two other booths in the city. The newest is at Lincoln Centers David Rubenstein Atrium, which is indoors and far less crowded. The other one is at South Street Seaport, the corner of Front and John Streets.

  • If there is a particular show that you want to see, check BroadwayBox for the advance purchase of discounted tickets. Some other good sources are TodayTix app, TheaterMania, GoldStar, and New York Show Tickets, which, however, costs $4 per month for membership.

  • For hot shows that you just cant get a discounted ticket to, buy it at the ticket office. At least, there, you dont have to pay the hefty service fee. Additionally, you can find deeply discounted tickets on sites like StubHub and VividSeats right before the curtain time.

The Best Broadway Shows Of 2021

At a time when a new coronavirus variant threatens to undo any modicum of progress that New York City made during the pandemic, it seems almost preposterous that live theater ever even happened this year. But it was not only restored it was exuberant.

Following necessary and long-overdue action to further diversify the Broadway stage, Black playwrights wrote every new play on the so-called Great White Way, The Grio reported in July.

With that came a plethora of rich, deeply human stories about Black and other people of color, illuminating a variety of lives that defy all moral, sexual or gender binaries.

From two Black men contemplating their lives at a crossroads to six disregarded Tudor-period women taking center stage, to Broadway confronting its own demons in a more than 60-year-old play, these productions show more than whats possible. They show whats actually already here if we only choose to look.

Along with those are the outside-of-the-box plays and musicals, including one helmed by a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and another that challenges the very limits of what a single talent can personify in one story. In spite of everything, it was an overflow of genius.

The Play That Just Won’t Leave

Although export comedy smash hit The Play That Goes Wrong made its final Broadway bow at the Lyceum theater in January 2019, theatregoers and critics adore Mischief Theatre’s first production so much that it simply moved to a long term home Off Broadway at the New World Stages! From humble off-West End beginnings at London’s Old Red Lion fringe theater/pub in 2013 , the riotously funny rib-tickler of a show has grown to become a global phenomenon, merging slapstick physical comedy with a wry sense of tongue-firmly-in-cheek British wit and a winning self awareness.

Four years later, with an Olivier Award already under its belt, TPTGW won a Tony during its Mark Bell-directed and J.J. Abrams-produced stint on Broadway and was so well received it extended its run by five months. A cross between Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python, the show expertly weaves together mishaps, accidents and pratfalls with timing so expert it’s not uncommon for the audience to gasp at the ensuing onstage chaos. It’s a play-within-a-play that takes farce to the next level and though it may seem that everything is going wrong, its underlying intelligence, technical mastery and jaw dropping stagecraft get things very, very right.
