Nyu Langone Reports Smaller Gains In Fiscal Q3 Earnings
NYU Langone Health saw profits shrink in the nine months that ended May 31 compared to the same period of its previous fiscal year, though it remained in the black.
The health system reported a net gain of $260 million, or a 5.3% operating margin, which was a drop from $436.5 million, or an 8.7% operating margin during the previous fiscal year. The lower profits were attributed to the impact of Covid-19 as well as the absence of one-time revenue items this fiscal year, including the conversion of its prior malpractice insurer into a publicly traded company, a settlement with a union for recoupment of benefit overpayment and released assets.
The earnings included $313.2 million from the Covid-19 relief Cares Act in March and $41.6 million in philanthropy, which allowed it to stay in the black. Without those funds, NYU Langone would have recorded a loss of $94.8 million, or 2.1%.
On a combined basis, including results from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Health System, there was a net gain of $78.7 million, which includes assistance from the Cares Act and philanthropy. Without the assistance, NYU Langone Health would have recorded a combined loss of $295.9 million, for an operating margin loss of 4.5%.

New Yorkpresbyterian Opens Maternity Hospital In Upper East Side Tower
New YorkPresbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center on Sunday opened a maternity hospital offering 75 private rooms for the newest New Yorkers and their moms.
The hospital is located on the top six floors of the $1.1 billion David H. Koch Center, which offers ambulatory care, at 1283 York Ave., near East 68th St., across from Weill Cornell’s main campus. The Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns was supported by a $75 million gift from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation.
Weill Cornell began admitting patients there Sunday morning and plans to begin transferring patients from its Greenberg Pavilion to the new unit when it’s safe to do so, said Dr. Laura Riley, the hospital’s obstetrician and gynecologist-in-chief and chair of OB/GYN at Weill Cornell Medicine.
The facility will triple the space of Weill Cornell’s maternity-care unit and allow it to perform 7,000 deliveries a year, up from about 5,100, in the 246,500-square-foot space.
“What’s unique is that once you deliver, the postpartum rooms are private, and you can have your own space to learn how to breastfeed, to bond with your baby and start your family unit essentially immediately after delivery,” Riley said.

Before I gave birth I heavily Googled information on New York Presbyterian Private Rooms but came up empty for the most part. Even when I took the tour the private rooms were occupied so we could only peek in the door. When I gave birth there in July 2017 I took pictures so I could share them with other Moms who would Google the same thing!
Some quick information that you probably want to know:
I gave birth to a healthy baby girl on July 2, 2017 at New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan. Here is our birth story that includes delivery room pictures!
The price of the private room is $385 a night. 99% of insurance will not cover a private room. Before we got the private room my husband had to pay the hospital directly with his credit card so you must pay first! Private rooms are basically treated like hotel rooms.
The following morning after giving birth you will be bombarded with hospital staff and unwelcomed visitors. I had 30 minutes sleep the first night because I was alone with our baby for the first time and couldnt keep my eyes off her! At 7:30 AM nurses and other people started to enter my room constantly. No lie but from 7:30-9:30, at least 10 different people came in, ranging from nurses, food , hospital photographer selling their services, city WIC office, birth certificate information people, etc.

Facing those kinds of shortages, certain hospitals will have no choice but to cut back or ration certain procedures.
In Buffalo, the Erie County Medical Center plans to suspend elective in-patient surgeries and not take intensive-care patients from other hospitals because it may soon fire about 400 employees who have chosen not to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Officials at Northwell Health, New Yorks largest provider of health care, estimate that they might have to fire thousands of people who have refused to get vaccinated.
And while the vast majority of staff members at New York Citys largest private hospital network, NewYork-Presbyterian, had been vaccinated as this week, more than 200 employees faced termination because they had not.
Weekly virus testing will not be allowed under the current mandate for people who refuse the vaccine.

City Organizations Receive Grants For Covid Relief
The Physician Affiliate Group of New York announced on Thursday that it received a grant from the New York State Health Foundation that would fund its Frontline Emotional Supports Program.
The group received $50,000 as part of the foundation’s $5 million commitment to funding Covid-19 response and relief efforts, which included grants to 30 organizations ranging from $50,000 to $200,000.
The group’s support program includes resiliency and mental health training as well as stress- and grief-management resources for physicians and health care providers. The funding also will help the group launch an individual outreach program for its members in partnership with mental health organization Vibrant Emotional Health, said Jorge Montalvo, chief operating officer of Physician Affiliate Group of New York.
Veteran support organization The Mission Continues was also awarded $50,000 in July. The grant allows it to partner with the city Department of Veterans Services to engage in Mission: VetCheck, an initiative to ensure veterans’ mental health, food and testing needs are met during the Covid-19 crisis. The Mission Continues has a team of 25 members engaged in outreach in the city, said Nick Zevely, senior director of external affairs at the organization.
“This grant will empower The Mission Continues to support this vital mission, which provides a link between veterans and the services, agencies and opportunities available to them during the pandemic,” Zevely said. S.S.

Nursing Home Hearing Will Force Zucker Industry To Defend Pandemic Response
The state Legislature is convening the first of two hearings this morning that will examine Covid-19’s rapid and deadly spread through New York nursing homes, with state Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker and representatives from nursing homes expected to defend their response to the disease.
More than 6,500 nursing home residents died or are presumed to have died from Covid-19, representing about one-quarter of all fatalities in the state. Of course, older people and individuals with underlying conditions have been more vulnerable to the disease. But state lawmakers have questioned why nursing homes weren’t better able to protect residents.
The Cuomo administration’s March 25 order for homes to admit patients from hospitals also has been singled out as jeopardizing residents’ health, most emphatically by Republican lawmakers. The Health Department sought to rule out that argument with a report released earlier this summer that said asymptomatic workers most likely spread the illness before widespread testing protocols were implemented.
In an interview, Assemblyman Richard Gottfried said he is interested in probing the broader set of circumstances that put nursing home residents’ lives at risk. Those include the understaffing and underfunding of long-term care and a lax attitude toward the enforcement of safety standards by the Health Department, he said.
