Getting Around New York

Where to Stay in New York City
  • Take the subway. Its faster! You can purchase a MetroCard at any station as an individual ride card or a 7-day or 30-day unlimited card.
  • Download the Citimapper app to tell you the fastest ways to travel throughout the city.
  • Avoid empty subway cars! Its too good to be true. Usually, the AC is broken or there is a terrible smell.
  • New York is a walking city but pace yourself, make sure to stay hydrated and give yourself enough time to rest.
  • Dont stop suddenly in the middle of a busy sidewalk. Walk to the sides before stopping, and make sure to look behind you before you stop short.
  • Get the Curb Taxi App or use Uber or Lyft: Note from Deb and Dave: Taxis and Ubers in NYC are very reasonable and make it easy to get around.

Best Cheap Mid Budget And Luxury Hotels Near Times Square New York City

Times Square hotels are plentiful and span the entire travel budget range. This area has the highest concentration of low budget rooms in NYC.

We stayed at AC Hotel for a night, which was great. It has a rooftop bar and affordable room rate. The Riu Plaza often runs discounted prices but our top pick for Times Square is CitizenM as long as you can get it at a good rate.

Top tip: If youre a photographer and cant afford to stay at Renaissance Times Square, go in to the lounge for a drink and youll get one of the most iconic views over Times Square.

Our Personal Top Hotel Recommendation For New York

Our favorite hotel in New York is the citizenM Hotel just off of Times Square, which offers excellent value for money in a perfect location. We had already stayed at a citizenM in Rotterdam before and were really impressed with it.

Each hotel only has a single room category, and all the rooms have the same layout with super-modern furnishings. Were total fans of citizenM and would recommend the hotel to anyone.

A new CitizenM recently opened in the Bowery. If youve been to New York before and dont want to stay around Times Square, then the citizenM in Bowery is a great alternative.

Flat Iron And Nomad: My Personal Pick For Best Area To Stay In New York City

    WHERE TO STAY IN NYC?

When Im considering where to stay in a new city I look for local experiences. I want farmers markets, I want unique restaurants and bars, and I want a central area with good transport links. This is why I fell in love with these two neighborhoods in New York.

Flat Iron and Nomad are neighboring areas, separated only by Madison Square Park. It is mainly late twenty-early thirties creatives and tech entrepreneurs that live here, and they bring trendy cafes, unique bars, and plenty of restaurant choices.

Plus, some of our favorite hotels in New York city are here, which means youll have plenty of options in terms of places to stay.

    Why Avoid Midtown West

Midtown West is an expensive area and incredibly busy. There are people walking and cars tooting until the early hours so its not ideal if youre a light sleeper. Its also constantly bright from all of the billboards. Obviously, its a very touristy area so you wont get much of local life here and have to deal with ticket touts trying to sell things more than you might like.

Upper East Side: Best Area To Stay In New York For Museums

The Upper East Side is a residential area on the opposite side of Central Park from the Upper West Side. Its one of Manhattans ritziest neighborhoods with grand apartment buildings and expensive private schools. 5th Avenue between 82nd St. and 105th St. is known as Museum Mile. Visitors could spend a week just going to one museum after another and still not see everything! Shoppers will rejoice all the way from Bloomingdales to the swanky shops along Madison Avenue.

    Midtown Manhattan And Times Square

We have to admit, we love staying in the heart of Manhattan at Times Square. You are within walking distance to so many top New York Attractions when staying in Times Square. Plus, when you are in New York for the first time, youll never tire of coming back to the hustle and bustle of the neon lights of Times Square.

Midtown Manhattan was the area that we stayed in when we visited New York City for the first time and we still stay there from time to time. It offers some of the best accommodation in New York and you have everything at your fingertips.

The main thing we loved about this area is that you are within walking distance of many of the famous New York attractions. It really allows you to explore a lot in a small amount of time. It may not be the cheapest area in New York City but if you want to be close to everything this area is perfect. Check out Things to do in Times Square A Walking Tour and Nearby Attractions.

Best Cheap Mid Budget And Luxury Hotels Near Soho New York City

SoHo is another area in which you can easily find a hotel to suit your travel budget. NobleDEN and CitizenM are top rated budget hotels, which we highly recommend.

We stayed at Arlo SoHo and it was fine, but in the budget price point, we suggest either of the other two if more affordable.

The Crosby Street Hotel is stunning. If you can afford to splurge and stay here, do it! Along with its Central Park sister The Whitby Hotel, they are the two top rated hotels in NYC on Booking.com.

Here are the best hotels for each budget around SoHo :

    Queens John F Kennedy Airport

Lets just get this option out of the way shall we? Both of NYCs major airports, La Guardia and JFK, are in Queens. You can get in between them via Grand Central Parkway in about 30 minutes with traffic.

There are very few reasons Id imagine anyone visiting NYC would want to stay near the airports. However, I found myself thinking I shouldve done this when I booked a midnight flight from JFK Norway in January. Let me tell you getting from midtown Manhattan to JFK in January is not my idea of a good time. If I were to do it again, Id probably stay over night near the airport because theres the very cool lookingTWA Hotel thats designed to look its an airport from the sixties!

Can I Stay Outside Of Nyc And Take A Subway Or Train In

My girlfriend and I will be driving through the area in several weeks, and we would like to visit NYC. I was wondering if it would be reasonable and cheaper to stay someone outside of the city and then take a subway or train into town each day? If so, where are good places for that?

If you put “jersey city” in the search box, you’ll find more similar posts.

Oops, forgot to mention that you should also search this forum for “Secaucus” for more posts.

You’ll save money but it takes additional time.

How much time depends on where you decide to stay, how much earlier you want to wake up in the morning and how late the trains run to get you back to your hotel

Having done both, I prefer staying in the city, but for me the budget dictates which option to choose.

Check out the links QB has provided!

Hotels in the Secaucus area are pretty nice and less expensive. The Harmon Meadows area is a nice, business/hotel/shopping area that has bus service at several stops near all of the hotels. There are some restaurants, a mall, a movie theater – and the hotels are less expensive than in the city. You are 4 miles outside of Manhattan and the parking is FREE! We’ve stayed at the Hampton Inn and the Wyndham Suites – both were around $150 this spring, although the Hampton used to be under $100!!!!!
