Early Celebrations First And Second Balls

How Police Tried and Failed To Stop Capitol Attackers | Visual Investigations

The first New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square was held on December 31, 1904 The New York Times‘ owner, Adolph Ochs, decided to celebrate the opening of the newspaper’s new headquarters, One Times Square, with a New Year’s fireworks show on the southern roof of the building to welcome 1905. Close to 200,000 people attended the event, displacing traditional celebrations that had normally been held at Trinity Church. However, following several years of fireworks shows, Ochs wanted a bigger spectacle at the building to draw more attention to the area. The newspaper’s chief electrician, Walter F. Palmer, suggested using a time ball, after seeing one used on the Western Union Telegraph Building, near Trinity Church.

Ochs hired sign designer Artkraft Strauss to construct a ball for the celebration it was built from iron and wood, illuminated by a hundred incandescent light bulbs, weighed 700 pounds , and measured 5 feet in diameter. The ball was hoisted on the building’s 70 foot flagpole with rope by a team of six men. The ball would begin to drop at 10 seconds before midnight. Once it hit the roof, the ball completed a circuit that lit 5-foot-tall signs on the sides of the building to signal the new year, and triggered a fireworks show. The first ever “ball drop” was held on December 31, 1907, welcoming the year 1908.

At the internal conference election to choose party leaders in November, Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Matt Gaetz of Florida pressed Mr. Scalise about comments he made on a private conference call days after the Jan. 6 riot. During that call, Mr. Scalise agreed with Mr. McCarthy that Mr. Gaetzs comments about conservatives he deemed insufficiently loyal to Mr. Trump had been dangerous and potentially illegal.

Still, many rank-and-file lawmakers regard Mr. Scalise as a solid alternative and one seen by some conservative lawmakers as a more palatable option than Mr. McCarthy.

The Dark Horse: Representative Patrick T Mchenry Of North Carolina

Mr. McHenry came to Congress in 2005 at the age of 29 as a conservative rabble-rouser, and was frequently seen yelling on the House floor or on cable news shows.

But in the years that followed, the silver-haired, bow-tie-wearing Mr. McHenry underwent a metamorphosis. He became chief deputy whip to Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio, who later predicted that Mr. McHenry would become speaker himself one day. He pointedly took a lower-profile, behind-the-scenes approach to the job. And he developed a reputation among other lawmakers for his braininess and interest in tax and financial policy.

What changed for me was once I slowed down enough to respect the process and to respect the people that I served with in the institution, Mr. McHenry once told a local newspaper. I was able to get more done when I slowed down and had respect for others.

Mr. McHenry, who has for years been an informal adviser to Mr. McCarthy, has previously tried to scuttle the notion that he was interested in any top leadership post, saying he would rather lead the Financial Services Committee. He once gave the Republican leader a silver bowl in a joking reference to a famous scene from the crime drama series The Wire, in which a former mayor tells an incoming one that the vaunted top job is akin to eating silver bowls of feces all day.

He is the only Republican lawmaker whose name has been floated as a possible candidate for speaker who voted to certify the 2020 presidential election.

The Most Hated Man On The Internet

One of the more popular subgenres of true crime documentaries is the comeuppance story, in which a person or an organization that has behaved abominably is exposed and punished. With this three-part series, the director Rob Miller and his crew serve up a healthy portion of schadenfreude, telling the story of Hunter Moore, the man behind a popular revenge porn site and the women who enlisted the F.B.I. and a hacker collective to bring him down for posting nude photos and videos without the subjects permission. Its a gripping and satisfying tale, rich with irony.

Though a little bumpy early on it took some time for Whedon and company to find their tone once Buffy finds its footing, its unstoppable.

Public Editor Bias Warnings And Elimination

In 2003, the New York Times created the position of public editor, hiring respected and experienced journalists on two-year contracts to serve as ombudsmen who could provide accountability and transparency for the paper in the wake of the Jayson Blair scandal. The NYTs public editors regularly addressed the topic of liberal bias at the paper, and consistently found the paper to have meaningful problems with a left-leaning worldview that impacted its journalism.

In 2004, then-NYT public editor Daniel Okrent answered the question, Is The New York Times a Liberal Newspaper? with the sentence, Of course it is. He noted that on social issues such as same-sex marriage, Second Amendment rights, abortion, and environmental regulation, if you think The Times plays it down the middle on any of them, youve been reading the paper with your eyes closed.

Okrent specifically called out the NYTs coverage of the same-sex marriage debate, calling it a very effective ad campaign for the gay marriage cause. He charged that while other newspapers such as the Boston Globe and San Francisco Chronicle had written balanced articles including potential negative impacts of policy change, On a topic that has produced one of the defining debates of our time, Times editors have failed to provide the three-dimensional perspective balanced journalism requires.

Ma Raineys Black Bottom

The acclaimed stage director George C. Wolfe brings s Pulitzer Prize winner to the screen, quite faithfully which is just fine, as a play this good requires little in the way of opening up, so rich are the characters and so loaded is the dialogue. The setting is a Chicago music studio in 1927, where the Mother of the Blues Ma Rainey and her band are meeting to record several of her hits, though that business is frequently disrupted by the tensions within the group over matters both personal and artistic. Davis is superb as Rainey, chewing up her lines and spitting them out with contempt at anyone who crosses her, and Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 and won a posthumous Golden Globe best actor award for his performance, is electrifying as the showy sideman, Levee, a boiling pot of charisma, flash and barely concealed rage. A.O. Scott calls the film a powerful and pungent reminder of the necessity of art. Watch on Netflix

Final Preparations In Times Square

As the huge crowd gathers to ring in 2023, more than 100 million Americans will have their eyes on the iconic ball drop.

Organizers did some practice runs Friday to make sure everything goes smoothly.

The ball has gotten stuck before. In the 1950s, it got jammed because they used ropes. But that’s not the case anymore.

The ball is 12 feet in diameter, weighs 6 tons, has more than 2,000 crystals and 32,000 LED lights, which create a wonderful jewel in the sky.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, they will flip the switch to lift the ball. At 60 seconds to midnight, the countdown begins.

What Can I Expect

âA Man and His Watchâ

This free event is open to the public, and the standing areas allow for ample viewing opportunities no matter where you are, thanks to the video screens. However, the best ground-level views can be had along Broadway, from 43rd Street to 50th Street, and down Seventh Avenue.

Once you find the perfect viewing spot, stay put, as spaces are limited and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to return to the same area if you decide to leave. If you hope to eat near Times Square before catching the ball drop at midnight, you won’t be allowed to do so because the areas will likely be full. Additionally, there are no public restrooms in Times Square, so plan accordingly.
