How To Be A Model In New York

Navigating A Modeling Career

HOW TO BECOME A MALE MODEL IN NEW YORK?! (TIPS & TRICKS)
  • 1Do not sign consent forms without consulting your agent. A client may ask you to sign paperwork or consent forms. Before you sign, be sure to ask for a copy to share with your agent. You do not want to sign a form that gives a photographer or client more power over your actions or images than they should have.
  • Similarly, do not sign a contract with an agency unless the agency and the contract both seem legitimate. If you are not sure whether the contract is good, have an attorney or an experienced model read over it for you.XResearch source
  • A good agent should have your best interests in mind. She should help you navigate the legal issues in any given contract. XResearch source
  • 2Be truthful about your measurements. Don’t say you’re skinnier than you are just to get a shoot. Once there, the stylist will have problems fitting you and the truth will come out. You could potentially lose future jobs due to word of mouth, and you could find yourself without a career!
  • 3Be professional, polite, and courteous. Remember that, even though you’re not working in an office, you need to be professional.XResearch sourceXExpert Source

How To Get Scouted By A Modeling Agency

Steered by fashion’s fickle whim, the best modeling agencies are always looking for new talent, and for an aspiring model, the right agency can make a career.

Signing to a reputed agency can be a gateway to editorial shoots that bolster a model’s portfolio, not to mention catwalk opportunities and advertising campaigns. A goldmine girl can also be lucrative for agencies, which make money by taking a 20% commission of all model earnings, while also charging brands an additional 20% of a model’s rate for each booking.

Supermodel scouting stories are the now stuff of legend: Kate Moss was discovered in JFK airport, while Gisele Bundchen was found in a mall in Brazil. Adriana Lima rose to fame from a Ford modeling competition, and Karlie Kloss was first spotted in a charity fashion show.

Today, the 21 highest-paid models who earned a combined $147 million are represented by one of four agencies in the U.S. More than half the models are signed to IMG, while Women Management, The Society Management and DNA Models each manage several of fashion’s money-making elite.

Yet as models compete with movie actresses and TV stars for high-paying beauty contracts and endorsement deals, the appetite for versatile supermodels who can build a following of their own has never been greater. Agencies are now casting their eyes wider, searching music festivals such as Coachella, and scrolling, which invites aspiring models to hashtag their photos with #WLYG to be considered.

    Renee Peters 28 Nashville

The first time I decided I could be a model was when I was 14. I was actually scouted at a mall in Nashville, and my parents immediately said, No, youre not modeling. Youre too young. Youre going to stay in school.

All of high school that was all I could think about. I started modeling locally in Nashville as soon as I was done with high school. I started modeling professionally in New York when I was 21.

The girls at castings that were getting selected were all very, very skinny. And so I put a lot of pressure on myself to be that girl because I wanted to succeed. And I developed anorexia and bulimia. That lasted five or six years, and it wasnt until a couple of years ago that I realized that I had a problem.

I think that there are definitely times when agencies ask their girls to lose weight, and that is a problem. But I think a lot of it is just inherent to the industry because sample sizes are so small, and because the thinner you are, the more celebrated you are.

Every day that youre working as a model, youre objectified somehow. You know, if its just a simple term of you being a mannequin or a model, like youre not actually a person and youre just a vehicle for the clothing or the makeup or the hair. And then sometimes its even like sexual harassment. I had one guy who wanted my nipples to look hard for the shoot. He literally just grabbed my nipple and was like, See, we need it to be hard.

Get As Much Exposure As Possible

The more exposure you get to agents, scouts and clients the higher the odds become that you will be successful in finding representation and ultimately booking jobs. When you are first starting out the most important exposure is to the agents and scouts. Why? Because they are the ones that have all the clients. They are the ones who are going to promote you and get you booked for jobs.

There are several ways you can get exposure to the agents and scouts:

    • Email your photos to the agencies This can be fast, but often not effective. Almost all of the top agencies that post an email address on their website post a generic email that is rarely, if ever, checked.
    • Send your photos out by mail to hundreds of agencies This can be a very costly and time consuming method.
    • Attend a modeling convention Modeling conventions can be a lot of fun and a great way for new models to get exposure, but theyre extremely expensive, usually costing over $5000.00 to attend.
    • Create a profile with ModelScouts.com. ModelScouts.com has direct connections to all the top modeling agencies in the world. At ModelScouts you will get the exposure you need to agents and scouts representing over 250 of the worlds most powerful agencies. ModelScouts welcomes high fashion, runway, commercial print, plus-size, petite, showroom and fit models of all ages, sizes and heights.

I was about 22. There was some preceding work that would happen, but I feel like I fully surrendered to the game three years ago. I had seen images of Crystal Renn and Sophie Dahl growing up, but I didnt really know about the plus-size fashion industry or how lucrative it was or like that it was changing or that I was even invited.

When I started Instagram, I kind of just did what I like to do or to show the things I like, whether it be sneakers or weird flowers, have the little drops of myself and my style kind of fluidly throughout. That was really helpful in starting and carving out my own place.
