Pass Required Certification Tests

Candidates seeking initial teaching certification in New York must pass several general and subject-specific tests. Testing requirements include:

  • edTPA: This test assesses elementary or secondary teaching skills, including curriculum development, classroom instruction, and student evaluation methods. Teachers must record their work in the classroom and actively self-reflect on their performance.
  • Educating All Students : This exam tests a teacher’s ability to teach students with disabilities, non-native-English-speakers, and diverse student populations.
  • Content Specialty Tests: Teachers must choose a content specialty test according to their desired teaching subject. Separate tests are required for individual subjects. Students seeking generalist certification can take the multi-subject test for early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary education.

Continuing Teacher And Leader Education Requirement

Educators who hold one or more of the following certificates are subject to the continuing teacher and leader education requirement:

  • Professional certificate in the classroom teaching service
  • Professional certificate in the educational leadership service
  • Teaching Assistant Level III certificate

Examples of educators who do not need to complete the CTLE requirement include, but are not limited to, educators who:

  • Hold only Permanent certificate
  • Hold a Statement of Continued Eligibility and Permanent certificate, and does not also hold a Professional or TA Level III certificate and
  • Have “Registered – Inactive” status .

The registration and CTLE requirements do not apply to educators who hold a certificate in the pupil personnel service or hold a Teaching Assistant Level I or Level II certificate.

There is one CTLE requirement per educator , regardless of the number of certificates held that are subject to CTLE. Educators who are subject to CTLE and practice in an applicable school throughout their five-year registration period must complete 100 clock hours of acceptable CTLE.

There are several levels/types of teacher certification in New York state. Ultimately, a master’s degree and at least three years of teaching experience are required for professional teacher certification. Previously, teachers had five years to complete a master’s degree. As of February 2004, New York state allows three years to complete a master’s degree, with a one-year extension possible.

Alternative Certification “Transitional B” Program

For example, if you are a person who already graduated from college but did not graduate from an approved teaching program, you could complete an Alternative Certification “Transitional B” Program. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5 and passed the NY state exams, you will qualify. Teacher Certification Reciprocity in New York

In addition, if you hold teaching certification in another state and are interested in moving to New York State to teach, you may be eligible to obtain certification through the interstate reciprocity pathway. New York Teachers Licensing Application Process

Once all of the requirements for New York teacher certification have been completed, applicants should submit their application to the Office of Teaching Initiatives using the online TEACH portal. The office receives most applications in June, July, and August, so its recommended to send in all information three to four months in advance of your estimated date of employment. The required steps to obtain a New York educator certificate are as follows:

Foreign Language And General Education Requirements

Study Guide for the NYS EAS (Educating All Students) Teacher Certification Exam

All undergraduate students must demonstrate proficiency in foreign language by fulfilling one of the following requirements:

  • successful completion of a one-semester college-level foreign language course or the equivalent or
  • having earned a score of 85 or higher on the New York State Regents examination in a foreign language.

A certificate of completion is not issued nor required by the NYSED when these competencies are met through coursework which appears on a university transcript. The NYSED states the following on their website: For applicants completing New York State registered teacher education programs leading to certification, workshop completion will not display in the workshop table on the NYSED TEACH system. Once a recommendation from the institution is made, the requirement will appear as checked off. The training is a required component of the program, and no additional training is required.

Your application is most likely listed as Ready for Review. Ready for Review means just that your application hasnt been reviewed by an evaluator at the NYSED yet. The system defaults to deficient or unmet for some requirements until the application is evaluated, it actually means that those requirements have not been reviewed yet. Please see NYSED Experience Requirements. Have your employer submit the Verification of Paid Experience Form to the NYSED. The evaluation will change once your counseling experience and application is reviewed.

Alternative Certification In New York

New York has an Alternative Teacher Preparation Program targeted at mid-career and career-changing professionals. This program consists of an introductory section followed by certification tests and then mentored, paid employment as a teacher. New York City also offers the New York City Teaching Fellows program, which is a subsidized masters degree fellowship targeted at increasing the number of highly trained teachers in the NYC public school system.

I Hold Early Childhood B

As answered in question 12 above, the NYSED allows already certified teachers to apply for additional certificates on their own, not through Steinhardt, you may view the requirements on the NYSED Search Certification Requirements site. To add Childhood Ed 1-6 and/or Students with Disabilities 1-6 you will need to re-apply to the NYSED online and mail them your transcript. You are not applying for extensions, but rather stand alone certificates in Childhood Ed 1-6 and/or SWD 1-6.

The NYSED requires at least 6 credits that must address the Childhood Ed developmental level, which you may have already completed as part of your program. If you have, go back to the TEACH Online system, apply for the additional Initial Certificate online following the instructions on the website.

If you were certified prior to the NYSED’s new DASA workshop requirement, you will need to complete the DASA workshop prior to the issuance of any additional or new certificates, please see details.

According to the NYSED, if you’ve taken the old non-grade range specific Multi-Subject CST, you will not need to take and pass the new Multi-Subject 1-6 CST.
