Gender Discrimination In Employment

How I Had an Abortion at Home in Texas | NYT Opinion

Discriminatory practices used by the paper long restricted women in appointments to editorial positions. The newspapers first general female reporter was , who described her experience afterward: In the beginning I was charged not to reveal the fact that a female had been hired. Other reporters nicknamed her Fluff and she was subjected to considerable hazing. Because of her gender, any promotion was out of the question, according to the then-managing editor. She remained on the staff for fifteen years, interrupted by World War I.

In 1935, Anne McCormick wrote to Arthur Hays Sulzberger: I hope you wont expect me to revert to womans-point-of-view stuff. Later, she interviewed major political leaders and appears to have had easier access than her colleagues. Even witnesses of her actions were unable to explain how she gained the interviews she did.Clifton Daniel said, Im sure Adenauer called her up and invited her to lunch. She never had to grovel for an appointment.

Walter Duranty’s Famine Coverage And Pulitzer

Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time. Criticism rose for his denial of widespread famine, known in Ukraine as the Holodomor, in the early 1930s in which he summarized Soviet propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: “Conditions are bad, but there is no famine”.

In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Duranty’s work. Von Hagen found Duranty’s reports to be unbalanced and uncritical, and that they far too often gave voice to Stalinistpropaganda. In comments to the press he stated, “For the sake of The New York Times’ honor, they should take the prize away.”The Ukrainian Weekly covered the efforts to rescind Duranty’s prize. The Times has since made a public statement and the Pulitzer committee has declined to rescind the award twice, stating that “…Mr. Duranty’s 1931 work, measured by today’s standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Board’s view is similar to that of The New York Times itself…”.

    Accusations Of Liberal Bias

In 2004, the newspaper’s public editor Daniel Okrent said in an opinion piece that The New York Times did have a liberal bias in news coverage of certain social issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage. He stated that this bias reflected the paper’s cosmopolitanism, which arose naturally from its roots as a hometown paper of New York City, writing that the coverage of the Times‘s Arts & Leisure Culture and the Sunday Times Magazine trend to the left.

If you’re examining the paper’s coverage of these subjects from a perspective that is neither urban nor Northeastern nor culturally seen-it-all if you are among the groups The Times treats as strange objects to be examined on a laboratory slide if your value system wouldn’t wear well on a composite New York Times journalist, then a walk through this paper can make you feel you’re traveling in a strange and forbidding world.

Times public editor Arthur Brisbane wrote in 2012:

When The Times covers a national presidential campaign, I have found that the lead editors and reporters are disciplined about enforcing fairness and balance, and usually succeed in doing so. Across the paper’s many departments, though, so many share a kind of political and cultural progressivism for lack of a better term that this worldview virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times.

    How Much Does This Matter

Firstly, the Times isnt ending its relationship with Apple entirely. Naturally, it will still have its own iOS app on the App Store, for example, but it also plans to continue working closely with Apple on podcasts such as The Daily.

More importantly, however, The New York Times hasnt had a significant presence on Apple News in quite some time, since it actually began pulling back on its participation over a year ago, and over the past year, the Times has only offered Apple News a few stories per day, according to a statement from Apple.

In other words, theres already been so little Times content on Apple News that you might not even notice that its gone.

However, the bigger concern isnt whether youll miss The New York Times in Apple News, but whether a decision like this on the part of such a major news publisher is going to simply be the first step in a bigger exodus from Apples News service. The Times historically marches to the beat of its own drum within the publishing industry, but this is definitely a decision that other companies are going to sit up and take notice of, and it could inspire those who are on the fence to have the courage to pull out as well.

A Video Game Free Content And Apps

In May, 2007, The Times was said to be the first newspaper to offer, as a part of its editorial content,a video game called Food Import Folly. The game is now hosted on another website, butcan be found here.

The Times had started charging viewers for access to editorial columnists and critics,to boost revenues, but on Sept. 17, 2007, the paper announced that it would make all content free. The theory then, widely accepted, was that there would be more potential advertising revenuefrom the increased traffic on a free website. Also, columnists and reviewers were complainingthat their articles werent being widely dispersed around the web, since only a limited subscriptionaudience could see their writings. In 2008, The Times leaped into the mobile universe, makingits website available on the iPhone and and iPod Touch.

Youll Stress The Health Care System

Trial of the century: How the Lindbergh baby stole all the headlines ...

Over the weekend, nearly a quarter of the more than 5,000 hospitals that report into the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said they were suffering a critical staff shortage.

Thats a larger number than any other time during the pandemic, the data showed.

Staffing shortages are expected to grow even more as frontline health care workers are either infected or forced to quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19. The dearth of health care staff couldnt come at a worse time more than 138,000 Covid-19 patients were in U.S. hospitals as of Saturday, according to HHS.

In addition, the HHS data found that ICUs across the country are more than 80 per cent full, with almost 30 per cent of the beds being used to treat COVID-19 patients.

Elective surgeries are being cut, and health care officials are worried that the nations health system wont be able to do its job.

The health care system is not just designed to take care of people with Covid. Its designed to take care of kids with appendicitis and people who have heart attacks and get into car accidents, Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown Universitys School of Public Health, told CNN on Sunday.

And all of that is going to be much, much more difficult because we have a large proportion of the population that is not vaccinated, plenty of high-risk people who are not boosted, he added.
