Supreme Court Says Constitution Protects Right To Carry A Gun Outside The Home

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a New York gun law enacted more than a century ago that places restrictions on carrying a concealed handgun outside the home an opinion marking the widest expansion of gun rights in a decade.

Because the State of New York issues public-carry licenses only when an applicant demonstrates a special need for self-defense, we conclude that the States licensing regime violates the Constitution, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the courts 6-3 majority.

The opinion changes the framework that lower courts will use going forward as they analyze other gun restrictions, which could include the proposals currently before Congress if they eventually become law.

The majoritys expansion of what the Second Amendment protects will have monumental ramifications far beyond carrying firearms in public on everything from age restrictions to assault weapons bans to limits on high-capacity magazines, said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law.

Were in for a whole new slew of litigation challenging any and every gun-control measure in light of the analysis in todays ruling, Vladeck said.

Critics say the ruling will impair sensible solutions they think can curb gun violence.

Holiday Markets During Christmas In New York

Depending on where youre traveling from your experiences with holiday markets might be a little different compared to what youre gonna see in New York City. As a German expat living in New York, I found it very interesting that there are no such things as Glühwein or anything like that on the best Christmas Markets in NYC. Holiday markets in NYC mainly sell handmade goods, accessories and of course food. The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park is one of the most famous markets in the city.

Another great holiday market in the city is the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. This one offers a romantic atmosphere with over 100-holiday booths .

A little more Downtown the Union Square Holiday Market has more of a European feel to it. More of how I remember holiday markets in Germany. Besides the 150 food vendors, New York artists are also stationed here and show off their skills .

What About Travel Between Regions In Different Phases

The reopening plan says that regions should not allow businesses to reopen if they prove to be a draw for large numbers of nonlocal visitors, but its not clear what the metrics for that will be. The plan also says that regions must coordinate reopening plans with surrounding regions, but again, its not clear how that will actually play out.

New York City Will Reopen 100% On July 1 Mayor Bill De Blasio Says

  • New York City will fully reopen starting July 1, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced.
  • The city as of Wednesday had administered more than 6 million doses of Covid vaccines, with roughly 36% of the city’s adult population fully vaccinated, according to city data.
  • “We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full strength,” the mayor said.

New York City will fully reopen starting July 1, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday.

“We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full strength,” de Blasio said in announcing the date on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

It’s the first time the city will be fully reopen in more than a year. The first shutdown began March 2020 when the city became the U.S. epicenter in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would like to see the city reopen before the date pitched by de Blasio. “I don’t want to wait that long. I think if we do what we have to do we can reopen earlier,” Cuomo said, according to NBC New York.

Restaurants, gyms, shops, hair salons and arenas will open at full capacity. Smaller theaters could reopen over the summer and Broadway is on track for opening by September. Schools will be back at “full strength” in the fall.

New York City has recorded 923,953 coronavirus cases and 32,461 virus-related deaths as of Wednesday.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether mask mandates will stay in place through the summer.

What Requirements Must Each New York Region Meet To Begin/continue Reopening

In order to reopen, regions must first meet a variety of criteria, including, most importantly, these seven health-related benchmarks regarding infection, death, and hospitalization rates, health-care-system capacity, and test-and-trace capacity.

Hospitalization and death rates

  • A 14-day decline in coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths from the virus on a three-day rolling average.
  • 15 or fewer total new confirmed cases of COVID-19 or five or fewer new deaths from the coronavirus on a three-day rolling average.
  • Fewer than two new coronavirus patients admitting to hospitals per 100,000 residents.
  • As of June 22, New York reported 10 deaths, the lowest number since mid-March.

Health-care capacity, after elective surgeries resume

  • 30 percent of both total hospital beds and ICU beds must be available.
  • Hospitals must have a 90-day stockpile of PPE.

Testing and contact tracing

In order to reopen, regions must have:

  • Capacity to conduct 30 diagnostic tests per month for every 1,000 residents, via an appropriate number of well-advertised testing sites depending on the regions population, and testing needs to prioritize people who show symptoms or have been in contact with people with confirmed cases of COVID-19.
  • At least 30 contact tracers for every 100,000 residents, or more if projections warrant that.

The progress of the regions in the seven health-related benchmarks is being tracked by the state on a regional monitoring dashboard.

Proposal To Replace Arena

On July 12, 2010, Town Supervisor announced an “alternate zone” for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum property that downsized the Lighthouse Project to half its proposed size and made the project, according to Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and the developers, “economically unviable for both the developer and owner of the site.” As a result, Wang, Mangano and the developers decided they would no longer pursue the project.

On May 11, 2011, the Islanders and Nassau County executives announced that county residents would vote on a referendum for approval of a $400 million public bond issue for a new plan to replace the Coliseum. The plan, including the construction of a new $350 million arena as well as a $50 million minor league baseball ballpark nearby, was presented by Wang as a last-ditch effort to keep the Islanders on Long Island. However, voters in Nassau County rejected a proposal by a 57% to 43% margin on August 1, 2011.

On October 24, 2012, the Islanders announced the team would move to the in after their lease expired at the end of the 20142015 season. The Islanders played their final game at the Coliseum on April 25, 2015, beating the 31 in Game 6 of the first round of the playoffs against the forcing a Game 7, held in and won by Washington, ending the Islanders’ run at the Coliseum in Game 6 of the Islanders scored the final NHL goal in the building, an empty netter at 19:07 of the third period.

When Will Schools Reopen

On July 13, Governor Andrew Cuomo laid out the criteria for reopening schools in New York State. A region must be in phase four and the areas daily infection rate, on a 14 day average, must be below five percent.

We all want schools to open but it has to be safe. In NY we will decide based on the data.Schools will reopen if a region is in Phase 4 & daily infection rate remains below 5% .Schools close if regional infection rate is greater than 9% after August 1.

Archive: Governor Andrew Cuomo

The guidance, put together by the State Education Department, came with a raft of safety guidelines for when schools reopen, including mandatory masking, daily temperature checks, and a focus on cleaning classrooms, buses, and common areas.

The key decision, about whether schools open in-person at all this year, will not be made until the first week of August. Until then, local districts will develop plans on how to reopen. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced his plan last week. It centers on a blended learning model that has students in the classroom two or three days of the week and learning from home on the other days.
