Hunter Biden Laptop Story
Social media networks and initially limited the spread of the Post story on their platforms, citing policies restricting the sharing of hacked material and personal information this decision proved controversial, with many critics, including Republican U.S. senator Ted Cruz of Texas and a Harvard Law School lecturer, deriding it as censorship. NPR reported that Twitter initially declined to comment how it reached this decision or what evidence it had supporting this. The New York Times initially reported that the story had been pitched to other outlets, including Fox News, which declined to publish it due to concerns over its reliability. The New York Times also reported that two writers at the Post, Bruce Golding and one other, declined to have their names attached to the story, and ultimately the story only listed two bylines: Gabrielle Fonrouge, who “had little to do with the reporting or writing of the article” and was unaware of the byline prior to the story’s publication, and Emma-Jo Morris, a former producer for Fox News’s Hannity who had no prior bylines with the Post. In response to the concerns about the veracity of the article, former Post editor-in-chief and current advisor Colin Allan responded in an email to the Times that the senior editors at The Post made the decision to publish the Biden files after several days hard work established its merit.”

Is The Nytimescom An Epic Fail
Many are pointing at NYTimes.coms $40 million paywall system and laughing. But I think they miss the point. For anyone who is even a little bit savvy, this paywall is going to be a minor inconvenience at bestas easy as hopping an unmanned turnstile. But I really think that NYTimes.com has their priorities straight on this one.
Their challenge: find a way to make money from their online contentwhich gets millions of hits a day, Im surewithout plastering it with obnoxious ads or creating a subscription-only model that essentially excludes it from search engine indexes, which are likely responsible for much of NYTimes.coms new online readership.
The folks at New York Times are not morons. They didnt think that everyone was instantly going to hand over their wallets. They didnt think that marginally clever folks in the blogosphere wouldnt devise and publish ways to skirt their paywall. I assume that they anticipated this type of activity and calculated it into their business model. I think its easy to underestimate the sheer volume of traffic that NYTimes.com garners. If 999 out of 1,000 people see that paywall and click away or hack their way around it, that still leaves one person who decided that access to some of the finest journalism on or off the web via NYTimes.com is worth $15 a month.
So, to NYTimes.com, I say Thanks! Thanks for doing what a business has to do without making your website completely suck. I just might end up subscribing.

Its The Sign Of The Times
In fall of 2016, the Foley Library unveiled a new subscription to The New York Times newspaper. Since then, both professors and students have been utilizing this service in fascinating ways.
John Kafentzis, a professor in the Integrated Media department at Gonzaga University, uses the NYT subscription to teach his students about current events. Kafentzis directs his students to the NYT to prepare for weekly news quizzes. He feels that it is a very reliable source for national news.
I find the breadth of things that they are doing are interesting both for my own information and also to show students whats going on in the news world. Things like their interactive graphics, the VR that they do, they are always trying new things and their website is especially strong, Kafentzis said.
The New York Times is revitalizing ways to acquire news. Through their new Virtual Reality app, it is possible to discover news in immersive ways. The app offers a 360-degree view of various news stories creating an in-depth and high-tech news experience. As part of the Foley Library subscription, all Gonzaga students have access to this application now too. Classes in all departments are utilizing the new subscription. Kafentzis believes that every student can find value in reading the news. I think that whether youre in PR or Journalism you need to stay up with whats going on in the world, he said.

Content Coverage And Controversies
The Post has been criticized since the beginning of Murdoch’s ownership for sensationalism, blatant advocacy, and conservatismbias. In 1980, the Columbia Journalism Review stated that the “New York Post is no longer merely a journalistic problem. It is a social problema force for evil.”
The Post has been accused of contorting its news coverage to suit Murdoch’s business needs, in particular avoiding subjects which could be unflattering to the government of the People’s Republic of China, where Murdoch has invested heavily in satellite television.
In a 2019 article in The New Yorker, Ken Auletta wrote that Murdoch “doesn’t hesitate to use the Post to belittle his business opponents”, and went on to say that Murdoch’s support for Edward I. Koch while he was running for mayor of New York “spilled over onto the news pages of the Post, with the paper regularly publishing glowing stories about Koch and sometimes savage accounts of his four primary opponents.”
According to The New York Times, Ronald Reagan‘s campaign team credited Murdoch and the Post for his victory in New York in the 1980 United States presidential election. Reagan later “waived a prohibition against owning a television station and a newspaper in the same market”, allowing Murdoch to continue to control the New York Post and The Boston Herald while expanding into television.
