New York Absentee Ballot Rules
- Absent from your county or, if a resident of New York City, absent from New York City, on Election Day
- Unable to appear at the polls due to illness or physical disability or because you are the primary care giver of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled
- A resident or patient of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital
- Detained in jail awaiting Grand Jury action or confined in prison after conviction for an offense other than a felony.
When To Submit Your Request
If sending your absentee ballot application or letter requesting an absentee ballot by mail, email, fax, or electronically, it must be received by the Board of Elections at least 15 days before the election. However, we suggest that you apply as early as possible.
If submitting your absentee ballot application or letter requesting an absentee ballot in person, your request must be submitted no later than the day before the election.
What Happens If I Vote By Mail And In Person At My Polling Place
If that happens, your in-person vote at your polling place counts, according to the state.
Your local board of elections is required to check the poll book the thing you sign when you show up to vote before opening absentee ballots. If you signed in to vote in person, your absentee ballot will be tossed.

Voting At A Different Polling Station

How Does An Absentee Ballot Work
An absentee ballot is a paper ballot which, when requested by you, is mailed directly to your residence or address in which you have requested it be mailed. Once you receive the ballot, mark the ballot according to your choices for each office following the instructions on the ballot.
