In this episode of pricing page teardown, Price Intelligently CEO Patrick Campbell and General Manager Peter Zotto look at what has been driving that growth, and where the New York Times are truly failing.

The New York Times Pricing Matrix

A different pricing structure might bring me back. But hey, maybe in the end, there is no pricing structure for the New York Times that makes sense for me to come back.

I get that. But at the very least, dont make me or any consumer have to produce something like this to figure out the basic cost:

Thats a chart of all the New York Times main subscription rates, as best I can tell, for the moment. You wont find anything like it on the New York Times site in places you might look, such as here or here, not that shows print alongside digital. Its worse when it comes to the print editions, where you often arent told flat-out what the regular rate will be when a trial ends. Consider this:

If you want to figure out the regular price of any of those options, after the subscription expires, you have to do the math. Sure, the math isnt hard but why not spell it out at least in the fine print?

Gender Discrimination In Employment

Discriminatory practices used by the paper long restricted women in appointments to editorial positions. The newspaper’s first general female reporter was , who described her experience afterward: “In the beginning I was charged not to reveal the fact that a female had been hired”. Other reporters nicknamed her Fluff and she was subjected to considerable hazing. Because of her gender, any promotion was out of the question, according to the then-managing editor. She remained on the staff for fifteen years, interrupted by World War I.

In 1935, Anne McCormick wrote to Arthur Hays Sulzberger: “I hope you won’t expect me to revert to ‘woman’s-point-of-view’ stuff.” Later, she interviewed major political leaders and appears to have had easier access than her colleagues. Even witnesses of her actions were unable to explain how she gained the interviews she did.Clifton Daniel said, ” I’m sure Adenauer called her up and invited her to lunch. She never had to grovel for an appointment.”

How To Avoid Paying The Sucker Rate For A New York Times Subscription

the understatement: Digital Subscription Prices Visualized ...

The assistant managing editor for new products and strategic initiatives at the New York Times made a minor strategic error last week. On Nov. 10, Gerald Marzorati blurted out at a Timespanel discussion on digital media that the paper had north of 800,000 subscribers paying north of $700 a year for home delivery who dont seem to know that. During the recession the paper raised the home-delivery rate 5 percent, Marzorati said, but only 0.01 percent canceled. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that theyre literally not understanding what theyre paying, Marzorati said. Thats the beauty of the credit card.

The blogosphere was titillated that a top Times editor would admit that Times readers arent savvy consumers. Seven hundred dollars, after all, is about what Apple will charge you for a 64-gigabyte iPad on which you can now read the entire Times free of charge provided you have a Wi-Fi connection. For $29 more, you can buy a 32-gigabyte iPad that you can use with either a Wi-Fi or a cellular connection. The Times app will stop being free early next year, but no way will the subscription price be anywhere near $700. Meanwhile, you can use your iPad to also read the Washington Post app and the Wall Street Journal app . As noted previously by Slates Jacob Weisberg, you dont really have to get the iPad apps to read these newspapers online, because the screen is big enough to make their Web sites decently readable.

New York Times V Sullivan

The paper’s involvement in a 1964 libel case helped bring one of the key United States Supreme Court decisions supporting freedom of the press, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. In it, the United States Supreme Court established the “actual malice” standard for press reports about public officials or public figures to be considered defamatory or libelous. The malice standard requires the plaintiff in a defamation or libel case to prove the publisher of the statement knew the statement was false or acted in reckless disregard of its truth or falsity. Because of the high burden of proof on the plaintiff, and difficulty proving malicious intent, such cases by public figures rarely succeed.

Walter Duranty’s Holodomor Coverage And Pulitzer

Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time however, he has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in which he summarized Russian propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: “Conditions are bad, but there is no famine”.

In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Duranty’s work. Von Hagen found Duranty’s reports to be unbalanced and uncritical, and that they far too often gave voice to Stalinistpropaganda. In comments to the press he stated, “For the sake of The New York Times’ honor, they should take the prize away.”The Ukrainian Weekly covered the efforts to rescind Duranty’s prize. The Times has since made a public statement and the Pulitzer committee has declined to rescind the award twice stating, “…Mr. Duranty’s 1931 work, measured by today’s standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Board’s view is similar to that of The New York Times itself…”.

Some New York Times Subscribers Actually Pay More Than $1000 Per Year

Full-price 7-day print subscription outside the NY Metro area can cost more than $1,000, says a paper spokesperson

The New York Times has long been the gold standard of journalism in the United States, but for an unknown number of print subscribers, regular daily access to it is coming at a solid gold price as well.

During remarks at UBS 46th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference, Times COO Meredith Levien revealed the pricey subscription fees while remarking about how business was doing for the print side of the news outlet.

Print still has a very clear place in the lives of subscribers, she said, noting that some Times readers were ponying upwards of 1,000 a year for the paper.

The Times confirmed the numbers, but said it was reserved only for readers outside the New York City metro area.

The annual full-price 7-day print subscription outside the NY Metro area can cost more than $1,000, a spokesperson told TheWrap on Monday.

The same spokesperson did not respond to follow up inquiries about how many subscribers were paying that figure or what made it so expensive. A representatives at a Times general care center that handles accounts was willing to break it down.

The last three Januarys there has been a rate increase, and I suspect there will be one this January, he told TheWrap.

Will The Times Change

Now that one of the Times own writers has helped expose this unethical design practice, the company should clearly remove this dark pattern.

But how does an organization avoid unintentionally using dark patterns or other coercive design practices?

Waiting for regulators to tell companies exactly what they can and cannot do risks ham-fisted legislation that limits innovation. It also puts the onus of companies to wait to be policed rather than doing the right thing right now.
