Sheep Meadow Really Did Once Have Sheep
The park’s iconic sheep meadow truly once was populated by sheep, at Olmsted’s insistence: “For aesthetic purposes, he wanted sheep,” said Kamil. “Gray and white to offset themselves against the green grass.” The sheep were stored at the Tavern on the Green, next to a dairy, and let out on to the meadow to graze twice daily.

What About Other Cities
Now that we have answered the question How big is Central Park? we need to look at the parks of other cities. And other city parks are huge.
The largest city park, according to the world atlas, is Chugach State Park in Alaska. When we expand our searches out of cities to all parks, we see the top five largest national parks are in Alaska. This may be an unfair comparison given that much of Alaska is an icy tundra. But even in the mainland, other locations have much larger parks than New York City.
Even when comparing the size of Central Park to other major cities, it is tiny. San Franciscos Golden Gate Park stretches 1.583 square miles. While the extra .2 square miles doesnt seem like a lot, the difference becomes exponential when considering the difference in population size. There are less than 1 million people in San Francisco, compared to New Yorks 8 million.

Heading north from the Central Park Zoo toward the heart of the park, youll discover the Bethesda Terrace. On the southern tip of the lake and surrounded by trees, the tiled arcade and grand staircase are surrounded by natural beauty. As you approach the Bethesda Terrace, stroll through the mall, where old-growth elm trees line the wide path, providing shade in the summer and a gorgeous burst of color in the fall.

Enjoy A Beer At The Tavern On The Green
Still known as the Sheep Meadow, the lush 15-acre pasture in the southern part of Central Park was once home to hundreds of fluffy sheep who brought a touch of the English countryside to the heart of New York City . Although there have been no grazers on this ground since 1934, the lawn is still known as the Sheep Meadow. And the beautiful Victorian barn that once sheltered the flock was converted into the Tavern on the Green.

American Revolution And The Early United States
Manhattan was at the heart of the New York Campaign, a series of major battles in the early American Revolutionary War. The Continental Army was forced to abandon Manhattan after the Battle of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776. “In the 1850s, the pathways of the roads were designed to be curved so you couldn’t race in your horse and carriage,” says Kamil. Now, he points out, “The New York Times last year ran an article about people racing bikes in park and injuring people.” Those curves don’t slow cyclists too much, some of whom top 32 miles per hour on the 6-mile loopas they, essentially, race. Olmsted and Vaux anticipated the urge to pick up speed in their park, but couldn’t have anticipated this particular change in societal habits. As Kamil notes, “Every controversy we’ve got, it’s nothing new.”

In 1853, the New York State legislature passed the law to set aside 750 acres in Manhattan for America’s first major public landscaped park. Although it’s true that some rich New Yorkers simply wanted a beautiful park similar to those in London, thus making New York a world-class destination, “I’m a little more cynical,” says Kamil. “Much of the land in what is now the park was useless for much of the 19th century, so I’d argue that the park was chosen to bolster property values of the land surrounding the park.” Central Park’s rocky, craggy stretches were “impossible to dynamite,” he points out, so the land wasn’t used, and it wasn’t easy on the eyes for nearby residents. “It’s nice to say, ‘Oh, yes, it allowed us to compete with European cities,’ but as is true of many things in New York, it was actually done for profit.”

S To 1950s: Moses Rehabilitation
In 1934, Republican Fiorello La Guardia was elected mayor of New York City. He unified the five park-related departments then in existence. Newly appointed city parks commissioner Robert Moses was given the task of cleaning up the park, and he summarily fired many of the Tammany-era staff. At the time, the lawns were filled with weeds and dust patches, while many trees were dying or already dead. Monuments had been vandalized, equipment and walkways were broken, and ironwork was rusted. Moses’s biographer Robert Caro later said, “The once beautiful Mall looked like a scene of a wild party the morning after. Benches lay on their backs, their legs jabbing at the sky…”
Renovations in the 1940s and 1950s include a restoration of the Harlem Meer completed in 1943, and a new boathouse completed in 1954. Moses began construction on several other recreational features in Central Park, such as playgrounds and ball fields. One of the more controversial projects proposed during this time was a 1956 dispute over a parking lot for Tavern in the Green. The controversy placed Moses, an urban planner known for displacing families for other large projects around the city, against a group of mothers who frequented a wooded hollow at the site of a parking lot. Though opposed by the parents, Moses approved the destruction of part of the hollow. Demolition work commenced after Central Park was closed for the night and was only halted after the threat of a lawsuit.

S To 2000s: Restoration
Under the leadership of the Central Park Conservancy, the park’s reclamation began by addressing needs that could not be met within NYC Parks’ existing resources. The Conservancy hired interns and a small restoration staff to reconstruct and repair unique rustic features, undertaking horticultural projects, and removing graffiti under the broken windows theory which advocated removing visible signs of decay. The first structure to be renovated was the Dairy, which reopened as the park’s first visitor center in 1979. The Sheep Meadow, which reopened the following year, was the first landscape to be restored. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, the USS Maine National Monument, and the Bow Bridge were also rehabilitated. By then, the Conservancy was engaged in design efforts and long-term restoration planning, and in 1981, Davis and Barlow announced a 10-year, $100 million “Central Park Management and Restoration Plan”. The long-closed Belvedere Castle was renovated and reopened in 1983, while the Central Park Zoo closed for a full reconstruction that year. To reduce the maintenance effort, large gatherings such as free concerts were canceled.
