A Library For All: The Story Of Brooklyns Central Library Decades In The Making
It would be hard to imagine growing up without a public library. No matter if you are in a large city or a small town, the public library has always been a place to discover new worlds. Within the library walls can be found the world we know as well as new worlds of imagination, talent, and creativity. Libraries are places where people can find help and services, be it free computer and Internet access, employment services, or general and historical information. Even if we are infrequent users of our libraries, we know they are there, thanks to generations of people who have deemed libraries necessary to the health and growth of the community.
But it was not always so. Our public library system in Brooklyn is celebrating its 125th birthday this year. Collections of books and reading materials have been gathered for use much longer than that in Brooklyn, but they were not free and available to all.
The Apprentice Library, founded in 1824, was established by manufacturer and philanthropist Augustus Graham. One of Brooklyns first libraries, it offered male subscribers access to books, maps, tools, and other instruments that would aid in the self-education of a new generation of workers. The librarys first permanent home was on the corner of Cranberry and Henry Street, its cornerstone laid by General Lafayette himself. As the organization grew, it became the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, which became the Brooklyn Museum.

The New Eastern Parkway Library
Brooklyn Public Library is in the midst of our most significant era of rebuilding in history, with one third of the Librarys system being rebuilt or renovated in the next five years. Across the borough, BPL is rehabilitating its vital neighborhood libraries with projects ranging from small restorations to full-scale renovations.
Eastern Parkway Library has served patrons for more than 100 years and is due to receive a full-scale renovation and potential expansion. An original Carnegie branch, this Classical Revival, two-story building features a limestone facade with large arched windows and is reached by a flight of steps. Inside, the library retains original details such as wood paneling, decorative plaster ceilings and a reading nook with fireplace. Located in an elegant, densely populated residential area of Brooklyn, the branch is one of the most heavily used in the system.
Beginning in 2023, Eastern Parkway Library will undergo a comprehensive interior and exterior renovation, including upgrades to all key building systems. The renovation project will provide for a potential expansion to modernize and improve the library while staying true to the buildings historic character.

Summary:
The Brooklyn Public Library was created through state legislation in 1892 and began functioning five years later. In 1901, Andrew Carnegie signed a contract guaranteeing the erection of new public libraries in Brooklyn. In November of that year, the Sites Committee posited the five areas in Brooklyn with the greatest need for Carnegie branches. The locations were Williamsburg, Fulton, Carroll Park, Bedford, and Stuyvesant .
The formerly private Brooklyn Library collection, in addition to several small independent libraries, formed the core of the Brooklyn Public Library by 1902. These independent facilities, including Brownsville, Bedford, Fort Hamilton, Washington Irving, and Flatbush, were soon housed in Carnegie buildings. Although the Brooklyn system was an independent corporation, the New York City mayor, comptroller and borough president were on the board of trustees ex-officio, and its staff was in the civil service. The Brooklyn Public Librarys main central building was not completed until 1941.

The central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, on Eastern Parkway, has what has got to be the coolest façade in the borough: a fifty-foot-tall portico, adorned with bronze Art Deco sculptures depicting fifteen classic characters from American literature, framed by two huge limestone columns covered with gilded bas-reliefs of a hissing griffin, a rising phoenix, and a spiny dinosaur, representing the evolution of art and science. The interior is another matter. The floor in the lobby used to be so grungy, I cannot even tell you, Linda Johnson, the president and C.E.O. of the Brooklyn Public Library, said the other day. The lighting was dark, dingya mess. Howevershe placed a hand on the shoulder of the woman standing next to herthat was before Toshiko.
The master plan became a four-phase, hundred-and-twenty-million-dollar project, the first part of which was completed last month. The pandemic was terrible, obviously, but it allowed us to move much faster than expected, Johnson said. She and Mori were standing outside the main entrance, wearing masks and sunglasses, waiting for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to begin. Johnson, who is very tall, wore heels Mori, who is not, did not.

BARNES & NOBLE has cappuccino Amazon.com has one-click ordering Google has more than four billion Web pages. So why venture out to the Brooklyn Public Library’s 1941 main building, at Flatbush Avenue and Eastern Parkway?
Well, the digital age has not yet killed the library, and this one has three million titles, as well as something that cannot be reproduced in bytes — the impressive, Moderne-style, wedge-shaped structure itself, which took more than three decades to complete.
Well before Brooklyn became part of New York City in 1898, it was smarting from its eclipse by Manhattan it founded its own public library system in 1892, three years before Manhattan’s began. The choice for the location of the Brooklyn library’s main building was slowed by disputes, but by 1905 it was definitely fixed at a triangular plot facing Grand Army Plaza and flanked by Flatbush Avenue and Eastern Parkway, which at the time was considered far from downtown Brooklyn.
The rest of the rooms have little character, except for beautifully machined bronze windows, with intricate worm gears and other controls it seems a miracle that these have escaped the replacement-window monster that has overrun so many other buildings.
