What Permits Or Licenses Do You Need To Fish In New York State
Before anyone can fish in any saltwater and freshwater areas in the state of New York, they have to own at least one of the following licenses or permits:
New York State Fishing License – Required of all anglers who will fish or take fish from any freshwater locations in the state of New York. There are four types of these licenses, and they are used to take freshwater fish by angling, spearing, hooking, longbow, nets, traps, and tip-ups take frogs by spearing, catching with the hands or by use of a club or hook and take baitfish for personal use, all as permitted by law. These privileges include:
- The holder of a license, tag, or stamp shall have such license, tag, stamp, or other valid proof on his/her person while exercising any privilege of that license.
- The holder of a license, tag, or stamp shall exhibit it on-demand to any police officer, peace officer, or the owner, lessee, or another person in control of the lands or waters on which the license holder is present.
- No license or stamp authorizes the holder to trespass upon private lands or waters or interferes with property belonging to another person.
- A freshwater fishing license does not allow for the taking of migratory marine fish.

Licenses Stamps And Validations: Online And Over
While fishing in New Mexico, anglers 12 years and older must possess a valid New Mexico Fishing License or Game-hunting & Fishing License. Licenses are valid April 1 through March 31 of the following year. A New Mexico Fishing License is not required on tribal reservations and private Class-A lakes.

In 2018 alone, fishing license sales generated more than $700 million across the country. One hundred percent of license fees go directly toward conservation and restoration, but licenses arent the only source of conservation funds. Each year, our Sport Fish Restoration Program distributes millions of dollars to state fish and wildlife resource agencies dedicated to restoration and enhancement projects across the country. This user-pay user-benefit reimbursement program relies on an excise tax paid by manufacturers, producers, and importers of sport fishing equipment as well as small engine and motor boat fuel taxes paid by recreational boaters. Since 1952, more than $8 billion in Sport Fish Restoration Program grant funds have been distributed to state agencies for approved grants, reimbursing them up to 75% of project costs.
