The Nyc Grid Has Streets And Avenues And Theyre Very Different

The first thing you need to know is that in the gridded part of Manhattan, which is most of everything above Houston Street, there are two kinds of roads: streets and avenues. They run perpendicular to each other, never parallel. Knowing where you are on this coordinate system will tell you where you are in the city.

In NYC, avenues run north-south, while streets run east-west.

Streets You Need To Know About In New York City

Welcome to New York. It’s been waiting for you.

Walking the streets of our fair city is one of the best pastimes we know of . Here are the 12 streets around the boroughs that, for one reason or another, hold a special place in our hearts.

Jones Street, Manhattan

I have a dream of recreating the cover of the iconic Bob Dylan ‘Freewheelin’ album with my wife, on Jones Street. I grew up with the album. Moving to NYC when I was 25 largely involved the image of myself as Dylan on that cold winter day in the early 1960s. Corny, I know. Ive been begging my wife to do this with me for years. — Buck Wolf, Executive Crime & Weird News Editor

Dekalb Avenue between Cumberland and Carlton, Brooklyn

I love this block for many reasons: the food, the shops, the park view and the dogs that line outside of a certain coffee shop every morning. It has everything you could want and is quiet but not dull, beautiful but still practical. One of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn, Martha, serves really special Asian-inspired farm-to-table fare on this block. A few doors down, the coffee shop Bittersweet not only serves excellent coffee, but also sells Dough doughnuts, as well as massive croissants and baguette sandwiches. They also sell dog treats, which, combined with the water bowls the shop leaves outside, attracts all the dog-owners — and their pups — who are on the way to or from Fort Greene Park, which is just across Cumberland Street. — Alison Spiegel, Associate Food Editor

Q. Address numbers in Manhattan are intuitive on the cross streets, but not so much on the avenues. Why is that?

A. Old habits are hard to break. In this case, you can thank a group of Fifth Avenue bigwigs who didnt want to update their letterhead.

The process of numbering Manhattan addresses dates back to 1793, when the city instituted a system first used in Philadelphia three years earlier: odd numbers on one side, even numbers on the other, both ascending in the same direction.

There was a critical flaw, unfortunately: each subsequent building on the same street received the next number, regardless of whether it was adjacent to the previous structure or separated by vacant land. When new buildings were constructed in between, the system fell apart.

The city adopted its grid plan in 1811, allowing for more uniform development of the growing metropolis. In 1838, using Fifth Avenue as the dividing line, cross streets were given East and West designations, as in West 41st Street. North of 13th Street, address numbers increased as one moved away from Fifth Avenue in either direction along the cross street.

The addresses on the block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, for example, took the numbers 1 through 99 between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, 100-199 and so on.

The avenues, however, would not be similarly tamed.

Avenues run north and south, their numbers ascending from east to west. In much of Manhattan, First Avenue runs along the East River, while 12th Avenue, on the other side of the island, runs along the Hudson River, and is also known as the West Side Highway.

Youll note that this numbering system means there are some odd intersections in Manhattan. Yes, theres a First and First the corner of East First Street and First Avenue in the East Village. Maybe youve heard that Ramones song 53rd and 3rd? Its title means 53rd Street and Third Avenue and East 53rd Street, we know, because Third Avenue comes before, or east of, Fifth Avenue. The neighborhood is Midtown East.

The Tanger Outlets are also not far from NYC you can get there in about 1.5 hours and enjoy the shopping paradise on Long Island. Since we had rented a car it was easy for us to swing by and snap up some great deals. If you are going to these outlets in the summer, I recommend taking a trip to the beach which is not far away! We took a tour to the Hamptons this summer and ended our tour at the Tanger Outlets.

All prices indicated on goods in New York do not include the sales taxes. You need to add an 8.875% sales tax to the total of all purchases. This number is comprised of the sales tax of the city of New York and the sales tax of the state of New York . Several outlet malls, for example, the Jersey Gardens Outlets, are located outside of the city for this very reason, here there are reduced tax rates on most goods and no sales tax on clothing items!

On the Upper East Side around Lexington Avenue, you will find a nice mix of luxury brands and more common brands like Zara and H& M. The Upper East Side is also home to Bloomingdales, one of the most famous and beloved department stores of New York City. When you purchase an item here it will be placed in one of their signature, world-renowned, Little Brown Bags for you.

    Garden State Plaza Mall

There are many malls in NYC, but we cant forget about the malls close to the city as well. Approx. 200,000 square meters filled with 400 stores Garden State Plaza promises the ultimate shopping experience. It is the largest mall in the state of New Jersey, and it is only 12.5 miles away from Manhattan. If you are an avid shopper, your pulse will double once you arrive in the small town of Paramus, New Jersey. You will also be saving here as you shop due to New Jersey not having a sales tax on shoes and clothing.

Due to its size, the selection at the Garden State Plaza Mall is huge. Outlets often feature many unknown brands trying to pedal their leftover products from the previous season but not here. Our jaws dropped when we looked at the map to see which stores could be found in the mall. In addition to the big department stores like Macys, J.C. Penney, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Neiman Marcus you will also find other great name-brand stores like Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, Superdry, Apple, and Abercrombie.

The list goes on with Converse, Gap, Hollister, Steve Madden, H& M, GUESS, COACH, MAC Cosmetics, and Lacoste. And this is just a small sample of what you can expect. Check out the complete list of stores in the Garden State Mall!
