What Are The Current New York Times Best Sellers

What Does It Take To Be Named A Best

How to Get on the NYT Bestsellers List

The general consensus is that if you want to make your way onto a best-seller list, any best-seller list, you have to sell at least 5,000 books in a week, or maybe 10,000. Beyond that, things get complicated depending on which list youre looking to end up on.

Thats because the different lists dont all use the same data. No one has access to all of the sales made by every single book published in the US in a given week. It takes months for publishers to assemble that data its impossible to get it all in time to publish a weekly best-seller list. At the end of the day, the publishers will have a hundred percent understanding of what was sold, says Jim Milliot of Publishers Weekly, but they wont have it by the end of the week.

So all of the different best-seller lists have established their own methodologies to gather sales data and once theyve got it, they break it down differently. They put the break between one week and another in different spots they use different categories to sort the lists they weigh digital and print titles differently. Heres a breakdown of how the five major lists Publishers Weekly, USA Today, Indiebound, Amazon, and the New York Times work.

Publishers Weekly, which Regnery has cited as the benchmark it will be following henceforward, pulls its data from the Nielsen service BookScan. BookScan is also the service that most publishers use to track their competitors sales, so its more or less the industry standard.

A Library Demand List

This tableThe table below takes the current New York Times Best Sellers list for combined print and e-book fiction and adds a bit of information for each title reflecting the demand for its e-book edition at a collection of U.S. public libraries, selected for their size and geographic diversity.

Here’s how it works. I take the fifteen current NYT Best Sellers and re-rank them according to:

the number of holds, to get a sense of the relative number of patrons waiting for each e-book.

the number of copies owned, to get a sense of which e-books libraries have purchased/licensed in great quantity. These tend to be books that have lingered on the list and/or were well-promoted ahead of time.

the ratio of holds to copies owned, to get a sense of not just which books are popular, but which are more popular than expected think acceleration instead of velocity. These tend, conversely, to be newer books and/or surprise hits.

In the table, for each book, I give you a sense of how widely those new library ranks diverge from its NYT rank. A book at the top of the NYT list but with low demand at these public libraries will be coded with red arrows a book low on the list that is hotly demanded will be solid green.

A dash indicates no divergence in rank. A typographical dagger indicates that no library holds any copies of the e-book.

Is It Really Possible To Game The New York Times Best

New York Times Best Sellers Nonfiction 2021

Buying your way onto the New York Times best-seller list is not all that difficult, although it is, as noted beacon of morality Tucker Max points out, basically cheating. The most widely accepted version of this play is to identify independent bookstores that you believe report to the New York Times and go to those specific stores on tours. Slightly more crassly, Mitt Romney boosted the sales figures for his 2010 book No Apology: The Case for American Greatness by requiring his book tour hosts to buy between $25,000 and $50,000 worth of copies of his book.

The publishers of Handbook for Mortals made their way to the top of the New York Times list via the expedient measure of calling up various independent bookstores and asking if they reported to the New York Times. If the stores said they did, the publishers placed a large order for copies of Handbook for Mortals with the knowledge that the order would go directly toward the books ranking on the Timess list.

The New York Times is aware of this vulnerability in its methodology, and it has systems in place to counteract it. If a books sales appear to be artificially inflated by bulk orders, the Times will usually place a cross next to the books appearance on the list to alert readers to the fact that something hinky might be going on. Sometimes it will delete books from the list altogether if it thinks theres reason to doubt that a books sales are legitimate.

The Usa Today Bestseller List

Keep in mind that the Bestseller List only gives a snapshot of what is selling really well during any given week. That means a book that sells well consistently but never sells thousands in one week may never hit the list. Likewise, book that sells really well one week but stops selling well later on or even goes out of print can still make it. Even books that are several years old can rise to hit the charts with a good promotional strategy behind them. Usa TODAY List adds up sales from previous Monday through Sunday to determine bestsellers for that week. So if youre going to make a go at it, plan your run for those days.

The New York Times Updates And Expands Its Best

Monthly Lists Will Now Include Mass Market Paperbacks and Combined Graphic Books

Today The New York Times Book Review announced changes to the Best-Seller Lists, in print and online. The Best Sellers team will begin tracking Mass Market Paperbacks and a combined list for Graphic Books .

Previously tracked by the Best Sellers franchise until 2017, these lists are returning due to continued reader interest and market strength. These monthly lists will begin publishing on October 2 and October 20 .

We are thrilled to bring back to our readers graphic books and mass market best sellers as two monthly best-seller lists, said Pamela Paul, editor of the Book Review. Our new monthly graphic books list combines the format as it exists across all platforms hardcover, paperback and digital in order to represent the range of ways in which publishers create and people of all ages read these books. And readers are passionate about the many genres from horror to romance represented on the mass market fiction list.

In addition, there will be two new monthly childrens lists: Middle Grade Paperback and Young Adult Paperback. The monthly Science and Sports lists are being retired as the titles on those lists are frequently represented on current nonfiction lists. These changes reinforce the mission of the Best-Seller Lists to track what is broadly popular in the bookselling industry.

All Best Sellers lists are available at nytimes.com/books/best-sellers.
