How To Qualify For New York Marathon

New York Road Runners Club 9+1 Program

Apply for the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

Runners who enter the New York Road Runner’s 9+1 program can earn guaranteed entry to the race by fulfilling certain requirements. To qualify, you need to be an NYRR member and complete nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races, and volunteer for one event during the prior calendar year.

NYRR is allowing runners who completed the 9+1 program in 2021 to claim their guaranteed entry into the marathon in 2022.

The 9+1 program was affected by the race’s 2020 cancellation due to COVID-19, so NYRR members who completed the virtual 9+1 program in 2020 participated in the selection process in 2021 to compete in either 2021, 2022, or 2023. Runners who qualified for earned entry through the program and chose to run in 2022 will be eligible to claim their entry for this year’s race.

According to NYRR, members could earn 9+1 race credits in 2022 by:

  • Completing scored, qualifying races in 2021 .
  • Volunteering at one NYRR race or event in 2021.

To learn more about the 9+1 program for the 2022 NYC Marathon, check the NYRR’s website for the most up-to-date information.

The Nyc Marathon Lottery: My Conclusion

As you can see, there are so many ways to get into the NYC Marathon. In 2019 NYRR even offered to run avirtual 26.2 miles race to guarantee your entry in 2021. I havent seen anything about this for 2021 yet, but I will keep you updated.

All roads lead to Rome, right? Same with the NYC Marathon good luck in finding your own way to the NYC Marathon.

Qualifying For The New York City Marathon

I am running the TCS New York City Marathon on November 2, 2014!

I cannot begin to explain what the New York City Marathon means to me, or even how the process of committing to qualifying affected me . All I know is that I am literally so excited that I have found myself teary eyed on several occasions- on the train, during practice runs, at finish lines- thinking about how it would feel to actually be coming down the final mile. Its super embarrassing, but true.

Not only did I decide spontaneously that I would immediately begin fulfilling my 9+1 credits, but I decided in which left little more than four months to run nine races. And since I am no speed demon , I qualified via the New York Road Runners 9+1 Program.

From August 24th to December 14, I ran 9 races: the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K, Autism Speaks 4M,Bronx 10 Mile ,Gretes Great Gallop 1/2 Marathon, Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff 5M, NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K, Join the Voices 5M ,Race to Deliver 4M, and the Ted Corbitt Classic 15K.

Looking back on those races, two are tied for my favorite: the Bronx 10 Mile , and the Ted Corbitt 15K .

Now I just have to learn how to train for a marathon! Then again that is why I found myself signing up for a practice marathon this spring but that is another story. A whole new racing season is coming and I cant wait to get started.

You’re Not Going To Quit Now

I could barely stand, there was no part of me, that wanted to try this again. But, I knew, she knew, we both knew I had to try again. But my training needed to change. Like all problems, I needed to go back to the drawing board. What am I missing? What do I need to do? How can I get faster, stronger and emotionally stronger. I searched, searched and searched. I searched for the latest advancements running technology, training, equipment, and nutrition. I’m not as talented as other athletes, I never was. I was always too small, too little, but I was smart. I needed to use my smarts to help achieve the unattainable.

I Began The Race Excited But I Was Nervous

I remember the pain from the last race, would I suffer the same fate. If so, then be it. I’m willing to suffer, I will embrace the pain. I hit my first few miles, but I was suffering. Courtney rode alongside me on her bike. Not letting me slow down. As my legs turned, I tired. A new concerning thought occurred at mile 5, maybe I had grown soft over the years. Maybe my life has been too easy lately.

Hold the pace. Keep the speed. Stay in the saddle.

And then the miles started piling up.

7 miles done and I’m on track. I’m hydrated, I’m hurting, but I’m on pace.

I slow down to drink water and speed back up.

Mile 10, on pace 6:24.

On pace! I don’t feel great, but I don’t feel awful. If I can hold on I’m going to make it.

Mile 11, on pace 6:26.

I’m almost there, I need to finish! I need to tolerate the pain for two more miles, 13 minutes of pure hell. My legs are scorched, but they’re still moving at the correct rate. Come on, PUSH!

Mile 12 on pace 6:24.

Important Dates for Runners

How Do You Qualify For The New York Marathon What Are The Requirements

The popular New York City Marathon is traditionally held on the first Sunday of November, and this year wont be any different with thousands of people anxiously waiting for Sunday, October 7 after a long year of training, especially after the 2020 annual marathon was canceled due to covid-19.

However, qualifying for the race is a challenge for many. Many people think the only option to enter the race is to qualify by time, but the reality is that as the time standards are tough to achieve, there are plenty of other ways people can get guaranteed participation such as drawing, 15+ legacy program or charity partnerships.

When Does The Lottery Open For The New York City Marathon

This year, the lottery for places in the New York City Marathon will open on Wednesday, March 9, and close on Wednesday, March 23. The drawing for these entries will be on Wednesday, March 30. You can enter the lottery on the race website.

Those entering the ballot are referred to as non-guaranteed applications. There will be three different drawings, one for NYC metro area applicants, who are residents in and within 60 miles of New York City, another for national applicants, who are US citizens living outside of the NYC metro area, and one for international applicants, for non-US residents.

To be selected, runners must have provided a valid credit card, and authorization to charge the card should they be successful in the ballot. If the charge bounces, another applicant will be drawn.

Once youve entered the ballot, youve agreed for organizers to charge your credit or debit card upon being successful in the ballot. You can remove your name from the lottery prior to it being drawn, but once you are accepted, the entry see is non-refundable.

Other Ways To Qualify

The race is also iconic because you have to qualify. A New ...

The good news is that qualifying by time isnt the only way into the New York City Marathon. The New York Road Runners, the marathons organizer, holds its drawing every year. The application for the NYC Marathon opens in January, and you can enter the race through any of the following options depending on your circumstances.

Drawing

Qualifying by drawing is one of the toughest ones as it implies it is a non-guarantee entry. However, this procedure is carried out every year to ensure geographic diversity in the race.

Charity Partnerships

There are several charities where you can help with fundraising or donate a certain amount of money–which varies depending on the charity–and you automatically get a spot in the NYC Marathon.

Check out the full list of charities available for this years event here.

International travel partners

One of the most common ways of entry for those who didnt meet the time required is international travel partnership. This means that travel customers who have booked several flights or accommodation night stays at diverse hotels that participate in the program may be able to enter. If you love to travel and are willing to gain a guaranteed spot in the marathon this program could be the perfect one to go for.

For non-US citizens, running the New York marathon comes with a pretty hefty price tag. The cost of the bib alone is $358, which at the time of writing converts to £277. When you combine this with travel and accommodation costs, its definitely a marathon youll need to budget for. Its also worth remembering that, like other marathon majors, the entry fee is charged upon acceptance and is non-transferable and non-refundable.

Ways To Gain Entry For The Nyc Marathon

From January 30th, through February 13, runners can apply for entry to the NYC Marathon 2020. If your goal is to run the NYC Marathon this year, these are your options for getting into the race:

Here is a link to the NYC Marathon lottery, if youd like to apply. I would still try my luck regardless of the slim margin for success. If the NYC Marathon lottery doesnt work out though, there are always other ways to get into the race.

  • Run for Team for Kids
