To cut costs, customers unload bulkier products directly off a pallet. Some items, like produce, are priced per item instead of by weight. For items that are sold by weight, the customers weigh, barcode, and tag those items before they reach the check-out counter. Unlike the regular stores, the 365 stores offer a rewards program.
There were other future locations that would include five 365 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, and Florida.
In reviewing the new retail format, a reporter for The Motley Fool wrote that the new stores were “closer to a combination of a fruit stand, convenience store, and a restaurant than a traditional grocery store” while a reporter called them “hipster havens” due to their use of high tech as a cost-cutting and efficiency measure. Most reviews were very positive, although some customers said that they missed talking to actual people when placing food orders via tablets.

Labor Relations And Anti
Among its core values, the company lists “supporting team member happiness and excellence”. The company maintains that its treatment of workers obviates the need for labor unions: At its U.S. stores, after 800 service hours, full-time workers are given an option to purchase health insurance coverage starting at $20 per paycheck for themselves, and spouse and dependent coverage for an additional charge. Workers also have access to a company-funded personal wellness account, and the starting pay at most stores is highly competitive.
Whole Foods’ health insurance plan is notable for its high deductibles $2000 for general medical expenses, and $1000 for prescriptions. However, employees receive $300 to $1800 per year in personal wellness funds. Once an employee has met the deductibles, insurance covers 80% of general medical costs and prescriptions but not for any type of mental illness. CEO Mackey drew attention to the insurance program for its employees in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal. In the article he called his company’s insurance plan a viable alternative to “Obamacare”. Mackey summed up his antipathy toward universal coverage in his op-ed by stating:

Shopped here quite a bit whilst in Williamsburg. Such a variety of food you’ll be spoilt for choice! Beware though you need ID to purchase alcohol. My 54 year old OH was refused his beer stash because he didn’t have ID at the checkout. He…quite obviously looks older than 21 but still refused. Wasn’t happy. There should be some discretion on this when the customer is OBVIOUSLY old enough to buy and consume alcohol. Need to get with it Wholefoods Brooklyn. Wholefoods near Times Square never batted an eyelid, never asked for ID when we shopped over there but he had his passport just in case. Consistency needed. That said a great shop.More
We decided to have a picnic at water’s edge and watch the sun go down. Went to Whole Foods Market to pick up some tasty items. This is a very modern store with ready made food choices on the main level as well as in…the basement level where the hot and cold food bars are located. We decided on the Korean area on the first floor and picked up a couple of bi bim bap rolls with tofu skins and some beverages. We consumed our items on benches in the park at the end of 6th St. The food was good but rather under-seasoned and I did not care for the sauce that came with it.More

BL Companies was the lead A/E firm for the design of the Whole Foods store, at the corner of 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue, in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, New York. The site is bounded in the rear by the Gowanus Canal tidal wetlands protected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and was home to an abandoned auto repair shop, former petroleum bulk storage tanks, and masonry yard when Whole Foods purchased it in 2003. The scope of work included Environmental Engineering, Survey, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering and MEP Engineering. The project is an excellent example of the unique application of engineering principles to produce the greenest of possible designs. The store has received LEED Platinum status.
