The small, shiny packets that claim to hold only scented potpourri look harmless. One, a bubble gum variety of Scooby Doo Snax, bears a classically goofy image of the clue-sniffing dog. Another, Barely Legal, hints at naughtiness with a cartoon rendering of a womans torso.
But the police and city health officials say that the contents, drugs known loosely as synthetic marijuana, or K2, is wholly illegal and dangerous. A particularly toxic batch was responsible for a mass overdose in Brooklyn over the weekend, sickening at least 56 people and leading to at least 15 arrests since Saturday.
Investigators are working to determine the source of the drugs involved in the overdoses, and officials warned the public to exercise caution.
K2 in and of itself is very dangerous, Terence A. Monahan, the chief of department, said at a news conference at Police Headquarters in Lower Manhattan. But what were seeing over the last couple of days 56 confirmed overdoses there is a very dangerous batch circulating right now in Brooklyn.
The warnings on Tuesday carried particular urgency for the citys homeless population: Three shelters were among the five places identified as epicenters. The largest number of patients, 21, came from the Fulton House shelter in East New York.

One street corner in Brooklyn appears to be the epicenter of the citys K2 problem, with first responders handling nearly 90 overdoses in and around the area in 2018 alone, according to police and local officials.
City Councilman Robert Cornegy Jr., who represents the area, stood on the corner of Broadway and Myrtle Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Monday and renewed his call for the NYPD do more to rein in the sale and use of the substance.
Back in May, at least 84 people in northern Brooklyn were hospitalized over a three-day period in what police described as a particularly toxic batch of synthetic marijuana, according to the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Fifty of those hospitalizations were connected to the corner of Broadway and Myrtle Avenue, per Cornegys office.
It was the largest number of K2-related incidents over a three-day period since July 2016, when 33 people overdosed near the same corner. Since 2015, more than 6,000 emergency room visits have been linked to the use of synthetic marijuana in New York City.

NEW YORK — Police in New York City are cracking down on the illegal sale of the K2 drug after reporting more than 50 overdoses and a dozen arrests in Brooklyn in recent days, reports CBS New York. At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan said there have been 56 confirmed overdose cases since Saturday, when police responded to an intersection in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
More than 25 people in the area were hospitalized with bad reactions to the synthetic marijuana.
“A lot of people standing on corners looking like zombies spaced out tripping out or fighting each other,” one witness said.

“We want to get the word out that there is a dangerous batch of K2 out on the street in Brooklyn,” he said. “K2 in and of itself is very dangerous, but what we’re seeing over the last couple of days with 56 confirmed overdoses, there is a very dangerous batch circulating right now in Brooklyn.
Eight of those arrested are accused of selling the K2, a synthetic compound that mimics the effect of THC, the most psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The drug can be many times more potent than the THC in marijuana.

As a result, New York lawmakers are aggressively trying to combat the surge in usage and distribution of this weaponized marijuana. The NYPD is conducting raids, prohibiting businesses from selling it, and dishing out $500 fines whenever possible. The buck doesnt stop there. Great effort is still being made to increase the fines permissible under law. Lawmakers want to hand out stiffer punishments to businesses caught distributing K2, including license revocation, shutting businesses down and even prison time for up to five and a half years for sellers caught with 16 ounces of the substance. The sale of synthetic marijuana has been banned in New York following a warning issued by the state’s health department.
The “legal pot” products have been popping up in bodegas and smoke shops around the state under innocuous names such as Mr. Nice Guy, Spice, and K2 .
In New York City alone, skyrocketed from just four in 2009 to over 110 in the last year.
The legal loophole of these products is that most of them are sold as “incense” and the packaging often warns that it’s “not for consumption.”

A prime example of the epidemic can be found at 125th Street in Harlem, which is frequently referred to as K2 Nation and is being touted as a ground zero of sorts.
