Who Is The Mayor Of New York City

The Mayor And State Governor Often Clash But The State Legislature Has The Ultimate Say

FOR MANY New Yorkers the covid-19 pandemic has felt like being a child trapped with two bickering parents. Andrew Cuomo, the states governor, and Bill de Blasio, New York Citys mayor, have spent the past year blaming each other for the coronaviruss heavy toll on the city, taking credit for what has gone right and undermining each others authority. Mr de Blasio recently declared that the city would fully reopen by July 1st, only to be rebuffed a few hours later by Mr Cuomo, who said it could open sooner. Mr de Blasios time in office is almost at an end the next mayor will probably be the winner of the Democratic primary election on June 22nd. But the question many are asking themselves is: who is really in charge of their city?

Who Is Eric Adams

Adams, 61, was born in Brooklyn and describes himself as a son of Brownsville, which is a predominately Black neighborhood. He grew up in a working-class household and was raised in South Jamaica, Queens.

When he was 15, he was beaten while in police custody, he said, which sparked his desire to become a police officer and change the department from within.

I was arrested, I was assaulted by police officers, Adams told CBS in July. I didnt say, Woe is me. I said, Why not me. I became a police officer. I understand crime, and I also understand police abuse, and I know how we can turn around not only New York but America.

In 1984, Adams joined the department and later served as the head of the Grand Council of Guardians, a Black officers group. In 1995, he formed 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group that sought to fight racial profiling and police brutality while restoring trust among Black residents.

During the 1990s, Adams was briefly registered as a Republican. He left law enforcement in 2006 when he was elected to New Yorks state Senate. He served as a Senator until 2013.

New York is going to show America how to run cities, Adams also said in July. Because I know how to run this city. I know how to lead.

Who Is Eric Adams What To Know About The Democrat Likely To Become New York City’s Next Mayor

NEW YORK Democrat Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa will face off Tuesday in New York Citys election, a contest Adams is heavily favored to win.

Adams, the Brooklyn borough president and Democratic nominee who campaigned on a message of public safety, has long been considered the frontrunner to lead the nations most populous city, which has a strong Democratic majority.

If elected, Adams would be the citys second Black mayor. He defeated a large of field of Democratic challengers in the June primary and won in the first major test of ranked choice voting in the city.

A former police captain and state senator, Adams is generally considered a moderate Democrat compared to some of his primary challengers, though he has a history of pressing for reform in the New York Police Department.

When you look at all the other mayors who have come up from where they came up from, there is no one like him. He is unique, Sid Davidoff, a fixture in New York City politics and adviser to former Mayor John Lindsay, told USA TODAY in June.

While two recent mayors, Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, won their first elections as Republican candidates, Democratic voters now outnumber Republicans 7-to-1 in the city, and Sliwa is seen as not coming from the citys mainstream Republican Party.

What To Expect From Eric Adams If He Wins

Berg predicted Adams success in his first term would largely depend on where the city is in its COVID-19 recovery in January, and addressing public safety will probably be his first test.

If he can handle police reform early on, and make everybody reasonably happy I think that that would be a very successful first year for him, Berg said.

Davidoff said Adams would take on a role he has never faced before in his political career, handling the citys large budget and appointing heads of its vast bureaucracy.

Beyond vowing to strengthen public safety, Adams has said he plans to make the city more friendly to business. We have been defined as a business-enemy city instead of a business-friendly city, he said in a September appearance on Bloomberg Radio.

Adams also recently signaled his support for the city schools gifted and talented program, which de Blasio said he would being to phase out.

De Blasio and Adams agree on COVID-19 vaccine mandates for city workers, including police officers, though Adams said he would have had more discussions with union leadership opposed to the requirement before instituting it.

Former sanitation department head Kathryn Garcia had 19.5% in third. And Yang, the entrepreneur riding the momentum of his 2020 presidential run into the mayor’s race, sat in fourth with 11.7%.

Adams, 60, made public safety his campaign’s central message at a time when the city has seen an uptick in crime. He’s also been an advocate for police reform in the past and promised to address racial inequities in the city.

Though briefly registered as a Republican in the 1990s, Adams was first elected to the New York Senate in 2006. He became Brooklyn Borough president in 2013. He would be the city’s second Black mayor.

Bruce Berg, a political science professor at Fordham University who specializes in New York City politics, said Adams, a “homegrown” candidate, gained credibility from both his police and political background.

Eric Adams Needs To Tackle Traffic Mayhem In Addition To Criminality

Add one more headache to the next mayors growing pile: inflation.

Over the past few months, Americans have been seeing big hikes in the day-to-day cost of living for the first time in four decades. Inflation hits the city budget, as well. It doesnt have to be catastrophic for public services but keeping it in check at the local-government level requires a firm stance with labor unions.

The numbers back up what people see every day, from McDonalds raising its menu prices to the record-high cost of Thanksgiving. Over the past year, the Consumer Price Index rose 5.4 percent, but some day-to-day items cost far more: The price of meat, poultry, fish and eggs is up 10.5 percent.

For now, the Biden administrations argument is that inflation will go away. Stuff costs more because of supply chain issues, code for people not going to work .

Maybe. But private-sector labors power, the biggest factor in inflation right now, isnt going away. Amazon, adding another 125,000 workers to its million-strong force, is effectively setting the minimum wage for the country. The company hiked its average starting pay in September to $18.

This cant be reversed. People whove worked for $18 arent going to go back to work next year for $15 or $12 or $10. Wages never fall, unless there is a full depression.

So what does that mean for New Yorks budget? Already, spending rose by 3.2 percent this year, to $104 billion.

Adams Focused On A Centrist Approach

Adams will be the prohibitive favorite in the general election against Curtis Sliwa, the Republican founder of the Guardian Angels. Democrats outnumber Republicans 7-to-1 in New York City.

Adams, 60, is a moderate Democrat who opposed the “defund the police” movement.

“We’re not going to recover as a city if we turn back time and see an increase in violence, particularly gun violence,” Adams said after three people including a 4-year-old girl were shot and wounded in Times Square in May.

“If Black lives really matter, it can’t only be against police abuse. It has to be against the violence that’s ripping apart our communities,” he told supporters the night of the primary.

But Adams is a study in contradictions who at different times has been a defender of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a registered Republican and a Democratic state senator thriving in a world of backroom deals.

Adams speaks frequently of his dual identity as a 22-year police veteran and a Black man who endured police brutality himself as a teenager. He said he was beaten by officers at age 15.

Adams became a police officer in 1984 and rose to the rank of captain before leaving to run for the state Senate in 2006.

While in the police department, he co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, a group that campaigned for criminal justice reform and against racial profiling.

The Greatest Mayor: How Would Dinkins Have Done Had He Come After Giuliani

Chris Smith: What qualities make a great mayor, let alone the best mayor?

John Mollenkopf: How could you be a great mayor without doing a good job of delivering basic services? And the unique challenges of the time: The extent to which the mayor understands those and responds to them creatively is the other half of being great.

Bob Hardt: When youre a kid, you imagine what would happen when Superman fights Batman, who would win. Theres a similar kind of fun to comparing mayors. How would, for example, Giuliani do if he were coming in in 1978 versus 94? Or how would Dinkins have done, had he come in as the Bloomberg after Giuliani?

Jennifer Cunningham: Its all contextthe right person and the right time come together, and youre a great mayor. And if youre not, well, shit happens.

Rev. Al Sharpton: I think what separates good mayors from great mayors is when theyre tested in a real crisis.

Mollenkopf: And symbolic leadership: expressing the citys values, the bully-pulpit side of it.

Smith: Rudy Giulianis allies say he saved the city twiceby driving down crime and then by rallying spirits after September 11. Is Giuliani the best ever?

Sharpton: I am probably the most anti-Giuliani guy in the room, and I think Giuliani set the right tone after 9/11. But even a broke clock is right twice a day.

Smith: Ed Koch steered the city through economic crisis and was a brilliant cheerleader.

Smith: Conventional wisdom says we shouldnt even discuss John Lindsay.

Who Is Curtis Sliwa And Is He Running For Mayor Of New York City

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will deliver remarks at ...

Curtis Sliwa, who is running for mayor of New York City, is the founder and chief executive officer of the Guardian Angels.

The non-profit Angels, launched in 1979 in the Big Apple, is responsible for creating hundreds of safety patrols chapters throughout the United States and worldwide, according to the organizations website.

In the mayoral race Sliwa has captured the Republican nomination, but will be considered the heavy underdog in the general election in November.

Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by 7 to 1 in New York City.

Sliwas likely opponent is former police officer Eric Adams, who has the lead following the Democratic primary. Adams did not get enough votes to clinch the nomination.

I know Eric, Im certainly going to take him to task, Sliwa told reporters the morning after the primary.

Curtis Sliwa in his younger days

Im going to ask him to join me in solidarity, if in fact he turns out to be the winner of the Democratic primary.

Sliwa is a radio host who still wears his red Guardian Angels beret when he appears in public.

He got an endorsement from former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani, who called him my great friend in a robocall to Republican voters.

Sliwa promised a general election campaign focused on crime.

Sliwa has ripped Adams for vowing to carry a gun instead of using police protection in certain circumstances, according to the New York Daily News.

A New Mayor For New York

In one glaring aspect he summed his city up.

New York City.

Penthouses and pent up energy. Buildings reaching into the clouds, and subways that flood when those clouds unload.

Not that this guy was giving it all that much consideration. He was asleep on the sidewalk. Unlike many of the homeless he lacked a shopping cart stacked with plastic bags. He lacked just about everything, even shoes.

But he had a big stogie in his mouth, locked in place as he slumbered on this West Side avenue. Thankfully, the cigar, that enduring symbol of success, was unlit.

Cuomo Is Resigning Now What

But it wasnt just in predominantly Black areas that Adams ran up the score. He was the first choice of 47 percent of voters in the True-Blue Bronx, which does have a sizable non-Hispanic Black population but is mostly Hispanic . While there was still a strong correlation between Adams support and the Black population in this political borough , he must also have won significant numbers of Hispanic voters in districts like Belmont and Fordham Manors, where the population is 73 percent Hispanic and 16 percent non-Hispanic Black but Adams got 42 percent of the vote. One potential reason: Like the Black Bloc, the True-Blue Bronx is heavily working class .

Similarly, New York Citys most conservative political borough, the Lands of Contradiction, is 46 percent non-Hispanic white, 26 percent Asian American, 19 percent Hispanic and only 5 percent non-Hispanic Black, but Adams still received 25 percent of first-place votes there. He was especially strong in plurality-white Assembly districts like Howard Beachs and Homecrests . However, Yang outran Adams in the political boroughs many plurality-Asian American neighborhoods , edging out Adams for first place in the Lands of Contradiction overall with 27 percent. Of note, both Yang and Adams excelled in the Assembly district that covers Borough Park and Midwood, home of several conservative Orthodox Jewish communities.
