Where To Get New York Times Newspaper

New York Times V Sullivan

How U.S. Police Took a Hands-Off Approach to Armed Groups in 2020 | NYT – Visual Investigations

The paper’s involvement in a 1964 libel case helped bring one of the key United States Supreme Court decisions supporting freedom of the press, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. In it, the United States Supreme Court established the “actual malice” standard for press reports about public officials or public figures to be considered defamatory or libelous. The malice standard requires the plaintiff in a defamation or libel case to prove the publisher of the statement knew the statement was false or acted in reckless disregard of its truth or falsity. Because of the high burden of proof on the plaintiff, and difficulty proving malicious intent, such cases by public figures rarely succeed.

Gender Discrimination In Employment

Discriminatory practices used by the paper long restricted women in appointments to editorial positions. The newspaper’s first general female reporter was , who described her experience afterward: “In the beginning I was charged not to reveal the fact that a female had been hired”. Other reporters nicknamed her Fluff and she was subjected to considerable hazing. Because of her gender, any promotion was out of the question, according to the then-managing editor. She remained on the staff for fifteen years, interrupted by World War I.

In 1935, Anne McCormick wrote to Arthur Hays Sulzberger: “I hope you won’t expect me to revert to ‘woman’s-point-of-view’ stuff.” Later, she interviewed major political leaders and appears to have had easier access than her colleagues. Even witnesses of her actions were unable to explain how she gained the interviews she did.Clifton Daniel said, ” I’m sure Adenauer called her up and invited her to lunch. She never had to grovel for an appointment.”

Washington Post Free To Edu

  • Feds, military and students can have free access to Washington Post digitalBy Josh Hicks September 9, 2013

The Washington Post started an online paywall system in June, but the organization now offers free digital access for federal employees, military personnel and students in higher education.

The new policy, which began last month, is an extension of the companys original paywall plan, which provided access to people in government, the military, and education while at work or on campus. Now those readers can view the Web site anywhere at no cost by logging in with their .gov, .mil and .edu e-mail addresses.

Instructions for signing up are available on the Posts registration page.

The Post paywall, technically known as a metered subscription model, limits all other non-paying readers to 20 free online articles or other items per month. After that, they have to subscribe using one of three options: check the current prices.

You’ll Stress The Health Care System

Over the weekend, nearly a quarter of the more than 5,000 hospitals that report into the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said they were suffering a “critical staff shortage.”

That’s a larger number than any other time during the pandemic, the data showed.

Staffing shortages are expected to grow even more as frontline health care workers are either infected or forced to quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19. The dearth of health care staff couldn’t come at a worse time — more than 138,000 Covid-19 patients were in U.S. hospitals as of Saturday, according to HHS.

In addition, the HHS data found that ICUs across the country are more than 80 per cent full, with almost 30 per cent of the beds being used to treat COVID-19 patients.

Elective surgeries are being cut, and health care officials are worried that the nation’s health system won’t be able to do its job.

“The health care system is not just designed to take care of people with Covid. It’s designed to take care of kids with appendicitis and people who have heart attacks and get into car accidents,” Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health, told CNN on Sunday.

“And all of that is going to be much, much more difficult because we have a large proportion of the population that is not vaccinated, plenty of high-risk people who are not boosted,” he added.

    How Much Does This Matter

Firstly, the Times isnt ending its relationship with Apple entirely. Naturally, it will still have its own iOS app on the App Store, for example, but it also plans to continue working closely with Apple on podcasts such as The Daily.

More importantly, however, The New York Times hasnt had a significant presence on Apple News in quite some time, since it actually began pulling back on its participation over a year ago, and over the past year, the Times has only offered Apple News a few stories per day, according to a statement from Apple.

In other words, theres already been so little Times content on Apple News that you might not even notice that its gone.

However, the bigger concern isnt whether youll miss The New York Times in Apple News, but whether a decision like this on the part of such a major news publisher is going to simply be the first step in a bigger exodus from Apples News service. The Times historically marches to the beat of its own drum within the publishing industry, but this is definitely a decision that other companies are going to sit up and take notice of, and it could inspire those who are on the fence to have the courage to pull out as well.

This article is part of our series on the Future of Transportation, which is exploring innovations and challenges that affect how we move about the world.

Electric vehicles are getting a lot of buzz. Yet sales of electric vehicles, or EVs, are expected to amount to less than 4 percent of passenger vehicle sales in the United States in 2021.

One reason: the inability to easily recharge on long trips, known as range anxiety. And the concern is valid: Range, charging time and availability of charging stations all still have a long way to go.

EVs are getting a boost, though: They are prominently featured in a $7.5 billion initiative from the Biden Administration, signed by the president earlier this month, with the goal of building a nationwide network of a 500,000 high-speed electric vehicle charging stations by 2030.

But that would solve only part of the problem, in part because charging times are still lengthy. The real sweeping change in the next decade may address that: roadways that electrically power cars as they travel, using a technology known as inductive charging.

For the Purdue project, its the start of the road trip.

You’re Spreading The Disease To Children

Just over half of children between the ages of 12 and 17 eligible for COVID-19 vaccines have been fully vaccinated in the U.S. Only 23 per cent of children between ages 5 and 11 have received their first dose, according to the CDC.

Because booster doses — considered a key warrior in the fight against Omicron –were just approved by the CDC for children as young as 12 last week, few children have received that third shot.

That means any risky behavior that might expose you to Omicron, such as not wearing a mask, not following social distancing guidelines, or gathering with crowds, especially indoors, will potentially expose others who may then carry the virus to their children.

Data from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows an upward trend of infections in children, which far exceeds “the peak of past waves of the pandemic.”

“For the week ending January 6th, over 580,000 child COVID-19 cases were reported,”according to numbers released Monday by the AAP.

“This number is a 78 per cent increase over the 325,000 added cases reported the week ending December 30th and an almost tripling of case counts from the two weeks prior,” the AAP stated.

COVID-19 Infections in children have typically been mild so far in the pandemic, but the sheer magnitude of cases caused by the very contagious Omicron variant is sending children under age 18 to hospitals in record numbers, according to data from the CDC.
