Biden Urges Vaccinations Amid Omicron Variant Concerns
President Biden called the new Omicron coronavirus variant a cause for concern, not a cause for panic, and urged Americans to get vaccinations and booster shots. The variant has not yet been detected in the United States.

WASHINGTON By the time President Biden was briefed on the emergence of a fast-moving new Covid variant on the morning after Thanksgiving, he had a choice to make and little information to base it on.
In a secure conference call from a vacation compound overlooking Nantucket Harbor, the president listened as his health advisers told him that the highly mutated virus was far more concerning than other variants they had seen in recent months. It spread twice as fast as the dominant Delta variant and had the potential to evade treatments and vaccines.
Banning travel from southern Africa, where the variant was discovered last week, would not stop the coronavirus from finding its way to the United States, the officials told Mr. Biden, even though Britain and several other countries had announced similar restrictions. But the measures might slow the spread.
Heres what it does: It gives us time. Gives us time to take more actions to move quicker, Mr. Biden said at the White House on Monday morning as he called the new variant, named Omicron, a cause for concern, not a cause for panic.
In addition, Pfizer and BioNTech will ask federal regulators this week to , according to people familiar with the companies plan.

Ms. Fitch argues that while the justices have allowed state officials to protect womens health and defend lives, they continue to prevent them from enacting laws on abortion.
In these last 50 years, women have carved their own way to achieving a better balance for success in their professional and personal lives, Ms. Fitch said in a statement. By returning the matter of abortion policy to state legislatures, we allow a stunted debate on how we support women to flourish. It is time for the court to let go of its hold on this important debate.
The Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents the Jackson clinic, says that a reversal of Roe would leave large parts of the South and Midwest without access to legal abortions.
Pregnant women who cannot afford to cross state lines to get a legal abortion would attempt to end their own pregnancies, the center said, and put them and anyone who helps them subject to prosecution.
For many, the barriers will simply be too high, and they will be forced to endure the substantial risks of continued pregnancy and childbirth, it said in a statement.

Such a ruling would be flatly at odds with what the court has said was the central holding of Roe.
Chief Justice Roberts was the leading voice on the right for a narrow decision. The thing that is at issue before us today is 15 weeks, he said.

Walter Duranty’s Holodomor Coverage And Pulitzer
Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time however, he has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in which he summarized Russian propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: “Conditions are bad, but there is no famine”.
In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Duranty’s work. Printing The Nyt Costs Twice As Much As Sending Every Subscriber A Free Kindle
Not that it’s anything we think the New York Times Company should do, but we thought it was worth pointing out that it costs the Times about twice as much money to print and deliver the newspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers a brand new Amazon Kindle instead.
Here’s how we did the math:
According to the Times’s Q308 10-Q, the company spends $63 million per quarter on raw materials and $148 million on wages and benefits. We’ve heard the wages and benefits for just the newsroom are about $200 million per year.
After multiplying the quarterly costs by four and subtracting that $200 million out, a rough estimate for the Times‘s delivery costs would be $644 million per year.
The Kindle retails for $359. In a recent open letter, Times spokesperson Catherine Mathis wrote: “We have 830,000 loyal readers who have subscribed to The New York Times for more than two years.” Multiply those numbers together and you get $297 million — a little less than half as much as $644 million.
And here’s the thing: a source with knowledge of the real numbers tells us we’re so low in our estimate of the Times‘s printing costs that we’re not even in the ballpark.
Are we trying to say the the New York Times should force all its print subscribers onto the Kindle or else? No. That would kill ad revenues and also, not everyone loves the Kindle.

Why Is This Case Considered So Important
In recent years, Republican-controlled states have passed similar legislation only to have the laws struck down in appeals courts because they were in conflict with the precedent created by the Supreme Court. Those states, in effect, were vying for the chance to be heard by the court, especially after the retirement in 2018 of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, a cautious supporter of abortion rights.
Mississippis appeal of the lower court ruling sat on the Supreme Courts docket since the fall of 2020, about one month before Justice Barrett was confirmed to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had died.
In May, the court, with its new 6-to-3 conservative majority, agreed to hear the Mississippi case, known as Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization.
In its brief to the Supreme Court, Mississippi asked the justices to overrule Roe and the courts 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which said states could not impose an undue burden on the right to abortion before fetal viability.
The court probably will not rule on the Mississippi case until June. If the justices were to approve the law, Roes viability standard would no longer be the law of the land. The Supreme Court has reversed its own positions on various legal issues dozens of times, including several in the 16 years since Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. was appointed in 2005.

New York Times V Sullivan
The paper’s involvement in a 1964 libel case helped bring one of the key United States Supreme Court decisions supporting freedom of the press, New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. In it, the United States Supreme Court established the “actual malice” standard for press reports about public officials or public figures to be considered defamatory or libelous. The malice standard requires the plaintiff in a defamation or libel case to prove the publisher of the statement knew the statement was false or acted in reckless disregard of its truth or falsity. Because of the high burden of proof on the plaintiff, and difficulty proving malicious intent, such cases by public figures rarely succeed.
