Now, it is 150,000 copies of a 626-page book called Moon Witch, Spider King, with a luminous cover that glows with neon pinks and greens.

While digital media completely upended industries like music, movies and newspapers, most publishers and authors still make the bulk of their money from selling bound stacks of paper.

Serena Williams Mixed Up With Sister Venus In New York Times Print Article

Serena Williams spoke out Wednesday after The New York Times inaccurately used a photo of her sister, Venus, to identify her in its print issue.

The article detailed Williams Serena Ventures, which recently announced an inaugural fund of $111 million to support early stage startups.

Normally, Black founders receive 1.2 percent of venture funding, according to Serena Ventures. However, 76 percent of the organizations portfolio founders come from historically underrepresented backgrounds, its website said, and 47 percent of the founders involved with Serena Ventures are Black promoting equity and inclusion in the financial sector.

No matter how far we come, we get reminded that its not enough, Williams tweeted alongside a photo of the Times article. This is why I raised $111M for @serenaventures. To support the founders who are overlooked by engrained systems woefully unaware of their biases. Because even I am overlooked. You can do better, @nytimes.

This was our mistake, the publication tweeted. It was due to an error when selecting photos for the print edition, and it did not appear online. A correction will appear in tomorrows paper.

While such mistakes usually occur without bad intentions, they may further perpetuate feelings of exclusion for marginalized communities.

Williams is among several notable Black celebrities who have been misidentified in media coverage.

An Inside Look At Where The New York Times Gets Printed

On a recent Thursday night, New York-based blog Arthurious headed to Flushing, Queens, for a tour of the printing facilities where the New York Times gets made. When the editor arrived at the gigantic warehouse, it was 10 pm, and production of Friday morningâs paper was just beginning.

This same process gets repeated every night at the Timesâ massive printing plant, producing nearly 250,000 newspapers which are then packed for delivery at sunrise every morning.

Arthurious is an online journal exploring city life through photo essays and interviews. They had this to say about the New York Times printing plant series:

âIâve been a New York Times subscriber for as long as I rememberâââlike magic, every Saturday morning a hefty stack of freshly printed newsprint sheets arrive at my doorstep. I settle in the most comfortable chair in the house and flip through the sections of the paperâaccompanied by a double espresso. Magic aside, I have often wondered how each and every section of the paper comes about in such coordination, when are the last edits sent to print, and how does the paper arrive to each subscriberâs doorstep, rain or shine.â

Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time however, he has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in which he summarized Russian propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: “Conditions are bad, but there is no famine”.

In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Duranty’s work. Von Hagen found Duranty’s reports to be unbalanced and uncritical, and that they far too often gave voice to Stalinistpropaganda. In comments to the press he stated, “For the sake of The New York Times’ honor, they should take the prize away.”The Ukrainian Weekly covered the efforts to rescind Duranty’s prize. The Times has since made a public statement and the Pulitzer committee has declined to rescind the award twice stating, “…Mr. Duranty’s 1931 work, measured by today’s standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Board’s view is similar to that of The New York Times itself…”.
