The Impact Of The Broadway Theatre On The Economy Of New York City

GENERAL

The availability of live theatre in New York and other major urban centers across the country has always been recognized as a unique and powerful attraction, but no reliable estimate of the economic contribution of theatre existed. In the usual course of affairs it is impossible to separate theatre-connected expenditures from figures for the total economy. However, an unusual situation presented itself in the fall of 1975, when nine Broadway musical theatres were closed for twenty-five days as a result of a strike by Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, reducing total attendance and theatre revenues by some 70 percent. This strike presented the opportunity for a near-controlled experiment indicating the economic impact of the Broadway theatre on the earnings of closely related business activities.

Realizing that such an opportunity might not occur again, and recognizing the importance of understanding theatre’s role in the on-going economy of the nation’s cities, Professor William Baumol of Mathematica, Inc., Princeton, New Jersey, conducted the first systematic investigation of the indirect economic contribution of the Broadway theatre: the expenditures of audience members related to their theatre attendance. Actual theatre expenditures were also considered to achieve a total picture of the industry’s economic impact.

Early Theatre In New York

New York’s first significant theatre presence arose about 1750 when actor-managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street, which held about 280 people. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas such as The Beggar’s Opera. In 1752, William Hallam sent a company of twelve actors from Britain to the colonies with his brother Lewis as their manager. They established a theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia, and opened with The Merchant of Venice and The Anatomist. The company moved to New York in 1753, performing ballad operas and ballad-farces like Damon and Phillida. The Revolutionary War suspended theatre in New York, but thereafter theatre resumed in 1798, the year the 2,000-seat Park Theatre was built on Chatham Street ” rel=”nofollow”> Park Row). The Bowery Theatre opened in 1826, followed by others.

The plays of William Shakespeare were frequently performed on the Broadway stage during the period, most notably by American actor Edwin Booth who was internationally known for his performance as Hamlet. Booth played the role for a famous 100 consecutive performances at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1865 , and would later revive the role at his own Booth’s Theatre . Other renowned Shakespeareans who appeared in New York in this era were Henry Irving, Tommaso Salvini, Fanny Davenport, and Charles Fechter.

Producers And Theatre Owners

Most Broadway producers and theatre owners are members of The Broadway League , a trade organization that promotes Broadway theatre as a whole, negotiates contracts with the various theatrical unions and agreements with the guilds, and co-administers the Tony Awards with the American Theatre Wing, a service organization. While the League and the theatrical unions are sometimes at loggerheads during those periods when new contracts are being negotiated, they also cooperate on many projects and events designed to promote professional theatre in New York.

Of the four non-profit theatre companies with Broadway theatres, all four belong to the League of Resident Theatres and have contracts with the theatrical unions which are negotiated separately from the other Broadway theatre and producers.

The majority of Broadway theatres are owned or managed by three organizations: the Shubert Organization, a for-profit arm of the non-profit Shubert Foundation, which owns seventeen theatres the Nederlander Organization, which controls nine theatres and Jujamcyn, which owns five Broadway houses.

For Performances Starting January 3 2022 And Beyond Theatre Owners Anticipate A Review Of Policies Will Be Determined By December 1 Of This Year

The Broadway League announced today that the owners and operators of all 41 Broadway theatres in New York City will continue to require vaccinations for audience members, as well as performers, backstage crew, and theatre staff, for all performances through the end of the year. Under the policy, guests over the age of 12 will need to be Fully Vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine AND present a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. “Fully vaccinated” means on the date of the performance a guest is at least 14 days after their second dose of a two dose COVID-19 vaccine OR at least 14 days after their single dose of an approved single dose COVID-19 vaccine.

Competing With Motion Pictures

A look at New York theaters on Broadway and Upper West ...

The motion picture mounted a challenge to the stage. At first, films were silent and presented only limited competition. By the end of the 1920s, films like The Jazz Singer were presented with synchronized sound, and critics wondered if the cinema would replace live theatre altogether. While live vaudeville could not compete with these inexpensive films that featured vaudeville stars and major comedians of the day, other theatres survived. The musicals of the Roaring Twenties, borrowing from vaudeville, music hall, and other light entertainment, tended to ignore plot in favor of emphasizing star actors and actresses, big dance routines, and popular songs. Florenz Ziegfeld produced annual spectacular song-and-dance revues on Broadway featuring extravagant sets and elaborate costumes, but there was little to tie the various numbers together. Typical of the 1920s were lighthearted productions such as Sally Lady Be Good Sunny No, No, Nanette Harlem Oh, Kay! and Funny Face. Their books may have been forgettable, but they produced enduring standards from George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, and Rodgers and Hart, among others, and Noël Coward, Sigmund Romberg, and Rudolf Friml continued in the vein of Victor Herbert. Live theatre has survived the invention of cinema.

The Coronavirus Pandemic: Key Things To Know

A new U.S. surge. The C.D.C said that the Omicron variants rapid spread in the U.S. may portend a surge in infections as soon as January, but cases are already spiking, leading offices to cancel holiday parties, Broadway performances to be shuttered and college finals to be moved online.

The Omicron variant. The new Covid variant has been detected in dozens of countries. While Omicron appears to be able to partially evade antibodies, it could be less severe than other forms of the virus, and new laboratory studies indicate that vaccines, and especially boosters, may offer protection against severe disease.

The J.& J. vaccine. An expert panel to the C.D.C. voted to recommend that Covid vaccines other than Johnson & Johnsons should be preferred, citing increasing evidence that those shots trigger a rare but potentially serious blood clotting disorder.

U.S. surpasses 800,000 deaths.Covid deaths in the United States surpassed 800,000 the highest known number of any country. About 75 percent of the 800,000 deaths have involved people 65 or older. One in 100 older Americans has died from the virus.

The closings began almost as soon as Broadway reopened. On Sept. 28, the Disney musical Aladdin resumed performances at the New Amsterdam Theater the next day, the show canceled a performance, citing breakthrough cases, and then, after another performance, it detected more cases and took a 12-day pause.

The Week In New York Theater Reviews:

One is tempted to say that thus Broadway ends the year on a high note. But its an artificial high. This is a show built around the slenderest of premises the documented fact that Cary Grant, Clare Booth Luce and Aldous Huxley each took LSD in the 1950s. after sitting through the nearly three hours of this unique fusion of high-minded spiritual contemplation, gossipy biographical tidbits, subtle comedy and fabricated hallucinations all presented in song and dance, I was never completely persuaded that these three famous figures belong in the same musical

Company is perfectly timed, sadly. It is also, as it turns out, sublimely entertaining. The production, an import from England directed by Marianne Elliott, cannot be called definitive. Its most attention-getting feature is the switching of the genders of several of the characters, which at its best feels like an interesting thought experiment about the difference in our attitudes towards men and women. Even when the gender switching feels less than completely thought out, the musical proves to be sturdy enough to allow for such noodling around without undermining the essence of the show. It helps that this Company also showcases a company of some of the finest actors on Broadway, and several must-see performances Patti LuPone, yes of course, but also Christopher Fitzgerald and Matt Doyle.
