Historic Flatiron Walking Tours

A stingy piece of pie …the greatest inanimate troublemaker in New York,” was the New York Tribune‘s assessment of the Flatiron. New Yorkers views on it have shifted, of course. The Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership will tell you all about it. After a COVID layoff, their Sunday walking tours are back in-person. The free explorations include notable landmarks like the New York Life Insurance Building, the MetLife Clock Tower, the Appellate Courthouse, and, of course, the Flatiron Building itself.

Commune With Nature In A Park

There are loads of parks in NYC, but these are our favorites:

  • Central Park with expansive green spaces and statues and monuments
  • Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village for great people-watching and a funky, fun vibe
  • Prospect Park is a bit off the beaten track and located in gorgeous Park Slope neighborhood

Know Where To Stay In New York

New York is famously known for its five boroughs , each with a unique atmosphere and fantastic attractions. While New York does have a top-notch subway system, its a good idea to remain central and find NYC accommodation close to the things youre planning to do!

Most of central Manhattan is laid out well with Fifth Avenue as its equator and the main streets labelled for easy exploration. Midtown Manhattan is one of the best NYC areas to stay in because its nearby to so many NYC haunts and landmarks, as well a sprinkle of iconic New York skyscrapers.

The best place to stay for easy access to bars and eateries is Williamsburg in Brooklyn. This hipster paradise is a New York staple and home to a myriad of coffee shops, bistros and bars. With everything from pub grub to NYCs finest cuisine, Williamsburg is the go-to stop for foodies.

We could go on about all the fantastic areas to stay in, but well finish it off with the unassuming Meatpacking District, the perfect place for anyone interested in high-end wine bars and fashion. With household names lining its cobblestone streets and Chelsea Market nearby, as well as the amazing High Line, this fantastic New York area hits the sweet spot.

What Should I Pack For A Weekend In New York

New York follows the seasons like a champ so pack for the weather youre going to get. In winter, youll be needing a super warm coat and shoes, as well as enough clothes to layer for the weekend. In summer, it gets exceedingly warm so dress lightly and have enough clothes to change if you need to, and dont forget to pack your sunglasses! Its also a great idea to bring a blanket or towel with you for any picnics you might have. In general, youll always need a pair of excellent walking shoes and an umbrella on the off chance you get caught in the rain!

How To Get Around New York

The best way to get around New York City is by subway. It may seem confusing when looking at the map, but follow Google Maps directions and youll be fine. Buy a multi-day MetroCard and pay per ride or get a 7-day pass for $33 for unlimited rides.

Taking an Uber or Lyft can be a good alternative to using a yellow taxi. They are completely legal and authorized for use in NYC. You can request Uber cars at any of the major airports, JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.

Fremont Woman Killed in New York After Being Shoved In Front of Approaching Subway Train

Stroll around Central ParkThe perfect way to relax in the city and leave the crowds behind is to spend the day in Central Park. Its free, there are lots of paths to walk , bike lanes, lakes to row in, and a zoo. Since the park covers over 150 square blocks, its easy to spend hours wandering around. During the summer months, there are often free concerts and theater productions . From the late spring to the early fall, there are free guided walks run by the parks service on Saturdays at 11am. Im a big fan of laying out in Sheeps Meadow on a hot, sunny day with a book, some food, and a bottle of wine.

Several excellent museums can be found in or on the edges of Central Park too .

Visit the The Metropolitan Museum of ArtThe Met is one of the biggest museums in the world, and if you only see one museum in New York, I recommend this one. It has a wide array of art, historical artifacts, photographs, and other exhibits. I like its expansive Impressionist and Greek exhibits. Its chaotic and filled with people, especially on the weekend, but since it is so big, you can usually find some quiet spots away from the crowds. Budget at least a half-day here as a few hours wont do this place justice.

1000 5th Avenue, Central Park, Upper East Side, +1 212 535 7710, metmuseum.org. Open SundayThursday from 10am5pm. Admission is $25 USD .

Things To Do In Queens New York: Finback Brewery

Most craft brewers start out by experimenting quite a bit and eventually settle for their favorites. Kevin Stafford and Basil Lee, on the other hand, are having too much fun experimenting to settle on anything just yet.

These two founders of Finback Brewery are introducing some never-before-seen flavors in their 20-barrel brewhouse on 77th Avenue in Queens with exotic ingredients like Szechuan peppercorns, apple cider, roasted coconut, and green tea. All their witchs brews have resulted in some very interesting and extremely drinkable beers that they personally distribute in kegs around New York bars and bottle shops.

You can stop by their modern, spacious taproom and try a few beers, have a chat with other craft beer aficionados, and play a board game with them while you are at it. Everyone has their favorite drink, but you might want to try their imperial stout with chocolate and coffee from Native Coffee Roasters and Mast Brothers.

You Can Hang Out Inside These Cozy Chalets Overlooking The Rockefeller Center Ice Rink

14 Things to Do In New York This Weekend via @Purewow ...

The eight custom-built huts are heated and decked out.

It’s official: Rockefeller Center is the place to be this winter.

In addition to its iconic Christmas tree, ice skating rink, delightful nearby restaurants, a potential new infinity observation deck and the beloved heated igloos on site, the New York institution is now also home to new cozy chalets that you can basically hang out in for free.

The custom-built heated huts, of which there are eight in total, are presented in partnership with Coach and are completely free to use as long as you order some fare from Hombre Taco. From warm churros with Nutella and/or dulce de leche dip to hot chocolate and apple cider, the entire menu on offer sounds delightfully sublime. You can check it out right here.

Once inside, you’ll be treated by beautiful interior decor by Coach. The brand has, in fact, outfitted each hut in its own holiday decor so you’ll basically never want to leave.

When roaming around Rockefeller Center, you’ll likely notice the Coach Holiday Truck in the area as well.

Promoting the launch of the brand’s ski-themed holiday campaign, the truck sells merchandise from the line and even offers personalized monogramming services on weekends through the end of this month. The vehicle will stay put through the end of this month

The chalets are open on the south esplanade of 30 Rockefeller Center daily from 11am to 7pm now through January 31, 2022.

New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show

A dazzling and detailed replica of Manhattan, made entirely from plants, leaves, seeds and bark. There are at least 14 electric trains running in loops around the city, which showcases more than 175 scaled iconic buildings and structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, and the Statue of Liberty. The exhibit is great for both kids and adults, and makes an especially beautiful date night with cocktails on “Bar Car Nights” in December. Located in the Bronx, accessible by Subway and Metro North.

Tickets: Holiday Train Show All-Garden Pass

Just like NYC, twinkling lights go on at night with both city and holiday lights. All NYC landmarks and buildings are created entirely from botanical “ingredients” such as, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, poppy pods, pine cones, berries, mushrooms, nuts, bark, leaves twigs and dozens of other plant parts. Humming along between familiar sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center, large-scale model trains cover a quarter-mile of track to bring life to this traditional holiday landscape. The is definitely one of those “not-to-be-missed” and “only in NYC” unique and memory-creating things to do for couples, families and children.

How To Get To And From The Airport

There are three airports in the New York City area. If youre flying internationally, youll land in either either JFK or Newark Airport.

From JFK, the AirTrain runs to Jamaica Station, where you can connect with the subway to Manhattan and Howard Beach, to connect with the subway to Brooklyn. The fee each way is $7.75, payable only by Metrocard. Alternatively, book a private transfer with door-to-door service.

From Newark, the AirTrain serves the New York Penn Station, where you can change to a subway. The journey from Newark to the city is about 30 minutes and also costs $7.75. Or book a private transfer here.

LaGuardia Airport is the closest airport to Manhattan but it doesnt have any rail service. From LaGuardia, take the Golden Touch Bus which has 3 dropoff locations in Manhattan: Grand Central Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal and Times Square. Alternatively, book an airport shuttle for $38 that provides door-to-door service.
