Early Celebrations First Ball
The first New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square was held on December 31, 1904 The New York Times‘ owner, Adolph Ochs, decided to celebrate the opening of the newspaper’s new headquarters, One Times Square, with a New Year’s fireworks show on the southern roof of the building to welcome 1905. Close to 200,000 people attended the event, displacing traditional celebrations that had normally been held at Trinity Church. However, following several years of fireworks shows, Ochs wanted a bigger spectacle at the building to draw more attention to the area. The newspaper’s chief electrician, Walter F. Palmer, suggested using a time ball, after seeing one used on the nearby Western Union Building.
Ochs hired sign designer Artkraft Strauss to construct a ball for the celebration it was built from iron and wood, electrically lit with one hundred incandescent light bulbs, weighed 700 pounds , and measured 5 feet in diameter. The ball was hoisted on the building’s 70 foot flagpole with rope by a team of six men. The ball would begin to drop at 10 seconds before midnight, once it hit the roof of the building, the ball was designed to complete an electric circuit to light a 5-foot-tall sign to light up on all four sides of the building, indicating the new year, and trigger a fireworks show. The first ever “ball drop” was held on December 31, 1907, welcoming the year 1908.

Fox & Fowle originally planned to include eight fuel cells, which would have been capable of generating 12,800,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually, including all of the exterior signs’ power needs. Along with the photovoltaic panels on the facade, the fuel cells would have been able to provide most of the power for 4 Times Square, with building managers purchasing power from the city’s electrical grid from Con Ed only as needed. The fuel cells would have to run continuously to operate efficiently, since they could not be turned off or on easily, but the building’s power needs were much lower at night during the day. Furthermore, each cell cost $600,000. Consequently, plans for six of the eight fuel cells were discarded in 1997.

The Crossroads of the World has long since cleaned up its act but experts say recent broad-daylight shootings in the tourist hub reflect a new crime wave thats beginning to envelop every pocket of the five boroughs even the ones that have long been considered safe.
The Times Square shootings are a wake-up call on how far things have deteriorated in the city, Randy Mastro, a former federal prosecutor and the deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani, told The Post.
The latest shooting in Times Square is only going to feed the perception, if not the reality, that the city is far less safe.
Back in those original bad old days, the NYPD did not track shootings the way they do now only homicides and other major crimes. The Big Apples deadliest year in terms of crime was in 1990, when 2,245 murders were reported citywide, compared to 212 seen so far this year.
Christopher Herrmann, a shootings and homicide expert from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said comparing the crime in the 1980s and 90s to the surge in shootings seen today is like comparing apples to autoparts but the gun violence is cause for concern.
Its just a numbers game youre going to get some, you know, events that normally dont happen, in places that normally dont have shootings.
