    Early Celebrations First Ball

The first New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square was held on December 31, 1904 The New York Times‘ owner, Adolph Ochs, decided to celebrate the opening of the newspaper’s new headquarters, One Times Square, with a New Year’s fireworks show on the southern roof of the building to welcome 1905. Close to 200,000 people attended the event, displacing traditional celebrations that had normally been held at Trinity Church. However, following several years of fireworks shows, Ochs wanted a bigger spectacle at the building to draw more attention to the area. The newspaper’s chief electrician, Walter F. Palmer, suggested using a time ball, after seeing one used on the nearby Western Union Building.

Ochs hired sign designer Artkraft Strauss to construct a ball for the celebration it was built from iron and wood, electrically lit with one hundred incandescent light bulbs, weighed 700 pounds , and measured 5 feet in diameter. The ball was hoisted on the building’s 70 foot flagpole with rope by a team of six men. The ball would begin to drop at 10 seconds before midnight, once it hit the roof of the building, the ball was designed to complete an electric circuit to light a 5-foot-tall sign to light up on all four sides of the building, indicating the new year, and trigger a fireworks show. The first ever “ball drop” was held on December 31, 1907, welcoming the year 1908.

Its just as bad in DC. Im not afraid, the 64-year-old civil servant said as she waited to catch a train. Either you are going to get out and live your life or stay in the house, then youre just hiding out. Im not doing that.

So far in 2021, there have been 232 crime incidents in Times Square proper, including 22 felony assaults, five sex crimes and one rape, representing 5 percent of total crimes reported across the two precincts that cover it, CompStat data shows.

Even a costumed Minnie Mouse toiling in Times Square was socked in the face in January and the suspect a homeless man who lived at a nearby shelter was back on the streets less than 24 hours after the attack, cops said at the time.

Quality-of-life issues have also been popping up in and around the heart of New York City.

On Sunday, as cops investigated the latest shooting, a man was seen hawking plastic baggies filled with Hennessy $10 for one bag, or four for $20.

Last month, a crew of squeegee men, a relic of New Yorks worst days, were spotted aggressively soaking windshields on the edge of Times Square and were back the next day until cops chased them off.

Meanwhile, as the summer wears on, shootings are only expected to get worse citywide, said Herrmann.

The bad news is, gun violence peaks in New York City in August the numbers are going to continue to get worse until August and then well start to see them go down in September. Thats the good news, Herrmann said.

    Fuel cells

The building is partially powered by two fuel cells that are capable of 200 kilowatts each. They are installed on the fourth floor. The two cells could provide 50 percent of the exterior signs’ nighttime power needs but a minuscule amount of the daytime needs. They could generate eight percent of the building’s total electricity. The fuel cells cost $1 million and were made by United Technologies Corporation. As part of an agreement with Consolidated Edison , which operates much of New York City’s power-supply system, the cells must be turned off during a power failure, such as the Northeast blackout of 2003.

Fox & Fowle originally planned to include eight fuel cells, which would have been capable of generating 12,800,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually, including all of the exterior signs’ power needs. Along with the photovoltaic panels on the facade, the fuel cells would have been able to provide most of the power for 4 Times Square, with building managers purchasing power from the city’s electrical grid from Con Ed only as needed. The fuel cells would have to run continuously to operate efficiently, since they could not be turned off or on easily, but the building’s power needs were much lower at night during the day. Furthermore, each cell cost $600,000. Consequently, plans for six of the eight fuel cells were discarded in 1997.

    Dont Eat In Times Square

Lanie from Make More Adventures says, Times Square is great for a photo, but you do not need to spend time there and you definitely do not need to eat there. If you need to eat and you happen to be in Times Square, walk a few blocks east or west to find better and cheaper restaurants. Same for street food. It is more expensive the closer you are to Times Square.

    Art Is Hidden Everywhere

Enter Times Square, and youll be surrounded by hidden artworks. At the pedestrian corner where Broadway meets 7th Avenue, between 45th and 46th streets, visitors might hear a strange humyoull have to be alert to hear the sound emanating over the cacophony of visitors and street vendors. This is a work by sound designer Max Neuhaus, originally installed in 1977 and revived in 2002. And if youre in Times Square in the minutes before midnight, you might notice a synchronized art display on the districts billboards. Called Midnight Moment, the digital exhibits change every month. In March, Jeffrey Gibsons She Never Dances Alone will fill the screens of Times Square with a celebration of indigenous culture.

Where Is Times Square In Nyc

This is a great question because Times Square is actually a specific area. The official boundaries are 42nd Street to the south and 47th Street to the north and between Broadway and 7th Avenue to the east and west. This can be confusing because the billboards extend much further than that, and the theaters are everywhere, making Times Square look much bigger.

At the height of Times Squares bad old days, prostitution, child exploitation and drugs were on every corner and there was so much blood-soaked violence, only Broadway was barely hanging on as a tourist destination.

The Crossroads of the World has long since cleaned up its act but experts say recent broad-daylight shootings in the tourist hub reflect a new crime wave thats beginning to envelop every pocket of the five boroughs even the ones that have long been considered safe.

The Times Square shootings are a wake-up call on how far things have deteriorated in the city, Randy Mastro, a former federal prosecutor and the deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani, told The Post.

The latest shooting in Times Square is only going to feed the perception, if not the reality, that the city is far less safe.

Back in those original bad old days, the NYPD did not track shootings the way they do now only homicides and other major crimes. The Big Apples deadliest year in terms of crime was in 1990, when 2,245 murders were reported citywide, compared to 212 seen so far this year.

Christopher Herrmann, a shootings and homicide expert from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said comparing the crime in the 1980s and 90s to the surge in shootings seen today is like comparing apples to autoparts but the gun violence is cause for concern.

Its just a numbers game youre going to get some, you know, events that normally dont happen, in places that normally dont have shootings.
