What Do I Need To Move To New York

Have Your Checkbook Ready

WHY YOU NEED TO MOVE TO NYC | Living in New York

Renters: When you rent an apartment, prepare to have a lot of money handy, usually in the form of a bank-certified check. You’ll need to pay the broker fee if there is one, a months rent as a security deposit and the first month’s rent within a few days of signing your lease. One way to cut down on upfront costs is to find a roommate or apartment-share situation .

Buyers: Mortgage rates are still low, so you’ll probably want to take advantage of financing but if you can offer all cash you can speed up part of the buying process. Brokers tell Brick that deals are taking longer than usual to close these days and since time equals money, that can cost you a little: Buyers are having to extend their leases, find temporary housing, or even pay to extend their mortgage rate lock.

New Yorkers Cold Attitude

Ask MG: Im Moving To New York, What Clothes Do I Need ...

New Yorkers are known to be cold and indifferent, which, however, isnt necessarily a bad thing. On the bright side, people are all busy with their own lives, so no one will have the time to judge you for how you look and act.

On the flip side, urban loneliness is common here. Many people say it is hard to find someone to be with. Also, if you are in trouble, everyone might pass you by thinking its someone elses responsibility. However, I have seen incidents that contradict this. Once, a baby stroller got stuck in the gap between the train, and the platform, and people all stepped up and helped.

You Pay A Lot For Almost Nothing

It is not exaggerating to describe it this way: every inch of New York is a fortune, which is especially true in Manhattan. Even though you are paying over a thousand for housing, what you will get in return is a small, the so-called microscopic apartment often snuggled in a pre-war building.

I remembered that my first apartment near my school was so tiny that you could almost bump into the bed if youve turned too hard from the desk. That said, you need to be creative about how to arrange things. I recommend getting a few of these storage organizers to help you utilize the air space. For anything that you dont need often or at all, you can stuff them into the suitcases which often take the most space. Or, just get rid of anything that you dont need or sell them on eBay or Craigslist for some extra money.

How Do I Get Around New York City

One of the best perks of living in the Big Apple is that public and private transportation is plentiful. In most cases, you wont need your own car, and having one may actually be a burden due to heavy traffic and limited parking. The average commute time for a New Yorker is 37 minutes.

Many New Yorkers prefer to use the citys buses and subways as their primary form of transportation not only is public transportation more affordable than traveling by car, its often much faster with traffic. Google Maps estimates that a commute from Lower Manhattan to Rockefeller Plaza only takes 15 to 20 minutes by subway during morning rush hour, while the same journey can take up to an hour in a car or taxi.

If you purchase an Unlimited Ride MetroCard, you can use the Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses and subways as many times as youd like for a flat weekly or monthly fee. The cost of a 7-day pass is $33, while a 30-day pass is priced at $127.

If taking the subway isnt your thing, ridesharing apps and taxis are also readily available. Prices for each can vary, and each charges riders in different ways. For example, Uber uses surge charging when things get busy, while taxis instead charge a higher rate if the vehicle is moving slowly in traffic.

The city has also teamed up with Citi Bike to create a bike-sharing system with over 13,000 bicycles.

You Need To Engage Professional Movers

Everything You Need to Know Before Moving to New York City

Relocating to New York without engaging NYC movers is only possible if you have nothing to move but simple items. If you decide to drive a truck full of bulky appliances, heavy furniture, and other large items in New York without previous experience, it will be upsetting.

The best option is to hire household or office movers who have the experience and the right tools to make the moving process stress-free.

However, ensure you compare offers, customer ratings, and their affiliations to make sure you are dealing with trustworthy professional movers.

What To Do To Get Away From The Hustle

Living in a city that never sleeps can be exhausting, both physically and mentally. You can, for sure, try to stay away from the bustling areas and stay at home, enjoying a cup of tea or an old movie. But, thats not a long-term strategy.

Despite its dins and chaos, NYC is home to plenty of beautiful parks, classic museums, public libraries, and secluded gardens, where you can escape from the hustle and gain your inner peace. Some of my favorite spots in the city are Conservatory Garden in Central Park, the Temple of Dendur in The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, the Cloisters Museum And Gardens and Wave Hill in the Bronx.

Central Parks Conservatory Garden flanked by cherry blossoms.

Another great way to relax is to go to a spa, such as the one snuggled in the 5-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a neck, shoulder, and hand-focused treatment. If you are looking for a more luxurious retreat, try one of their wellness rituals like the three hour Thai Yoga Journey that uses Thai yoga massage to help you find balance inside and out. Other popular spas in the city are Aire Ancient Baths, Ohm SPA & Lounge, and Shibui SPA.

What Are The Safest Areas In New York City

According to Neighborhood Scout, the three safest areas in the city are West 218th Street and Broadway at the very top of the island, Madison Avenue and East 50th Street in Midtown, and Roosevelt Island.

But before choosing a place to live in New York City, you should check crime data for the neighborhood. In some areas of the city, dangerous areas and safe areas are only a few blocks away from each other, so its important to get as specific information as possible. The New York City Police Department makes crime data available through its CompStat 2.0 online portal.

There Is Much More To Do Here Than There Is Time For:

This city never sleeps but you will need to try if youre going to fit everything in that you want or need to do. As mentioned above, this city isnt short on things happening every minute of the day. In fact, there are so many bars open until 4am in the morning that literally hundreds have popped up since they were all legalised around 20 years ago.

Use An Address From Your New City So You Look Local

Things To do In New York City

Probably the most important trick I used when moving to a new city with no job was putting a NYC address on my resume. I used one of my friends . Whenever someone asked me during an interview how long Id been in NYC I usually said Id just moved a few weeks ago and was excited to start looking for work in the city.

It didnt really bother anyone that I was a newcomer. After all, its New York.

When It Rains It Pours

New York isnt quite as cold as say, Boston or Chicago, or as dreary as Seattle, or as hot as Houston. But one aspect of its weather may catch some newcomers off guard: the rain. It rains a lot in NYC, and much of it comes in the form of heavy downpours. If you dont have an umbrella, youll get drenched. Occasionally, theres also a giant snow storm, which can cause the city to shut down for a few hours or days.

Seasons For Apartment Hunting In Nyc

A large factor that can affect the real estate market in NYC is the season you are apartment hunting in. For instance, fall and winter are considered off seasons where there are fewer apartments available for rent and there arent a lot of people looking to move during that time. Due to this, it can be more difficult to find the exact apartment you want since there are limited options. However, since the market is in lower demand, the rental prices are lower and can be more affordable!

In contrast, the housing market is a lot more competitive during the spring and summer time where there are a lot more people looking to move to NYC. While there are a lot more apartments available for rent, it is also a more competitive market where these spaces tend to go faster. So if you are apartment hunting during the spring/summer, you might have to make apartment decisions a lot quicker or certain spaces you like will be off the market quickly. Additionally, rent prices will be higher compared to fall and winter due to demand.

Tips & things to know before committing to an apartment in NYC

Here are a few tips for moving to NYC and things you look out for before you put down that security deposit and first months rent on your new place in New York City!

  • Start by searching online listings four to six weeks before your planned move!

  • Think about the the type of space you need
  • Furniture
  • Hire movers
  • Pick A Nice Neighborhood

Why I Moved to New York How to Start in Consulting | ASK KCHOI #3

First things first, pick a neighborhood that you like. NYC is a city of neighborhoods, and each is distinctly different from the others, with a different culture and vibe.

  • Quietness: If you are looking for a quiet, safe and big place with a variety of dining options around, aim at the Upper West Side, which, however, is a bit pricer than its east counterpart – Upper East Side. Despite this, the east is equally nice just with fewer restaurants and grocery stores. Also, Midtown East, Battery Park City, Lincoln Square, Kids Bay, Long Island City, and West Village are good options too for anyone looking for a quiet neighborhood in NYC.

However, if you like to live in a more lively neighborhood, try Hells Kitchen, Midtown West, East Village, Financial District, and Astoria. But be sure to find an apartment that is high enough as it can be pretty noisy if you live at a lower level in these neighborhoods.

My second apartment was on the second floor of a pre-war building in Hells Kitchen, where the siren and traffic noise were on pretty much all night. Another drawback is the price, which can be a bit high in these neighborhoods, for instance, $3,700 per month for a one-bedroom apartment.
