Delight The Most Active Users
True story: a colleague of mine met Will Shortz a few months ago and, remembering my wife is a huge fan, recorded a video of him inviting her to play table tennis in Westchester.
Heres the clip
Crossword fans would crap their pants and tell everybody they knew if they got this.
Thats because nothing is better for word of mouth than delighting your fans.
The best part? It took Will 10 seconds to record that video. Im sure hed be able to pump out a ton of them if his team shared a list of randomly selected superfans every month. Yes, it would take a little effort, but in many ways the best marketing is unscalable.
Alternately, you could scale this idea by recording a generic message from Will and personalizing it with text. Think Facebook Memories. Even automated congratulations or pats on the back would work.
Aside from relying on Mr. Shortz, you could:
- Send appreciation or holiday cards by mail or email
- Get other crossword personalities to record messages and share with superfans
- Mail crossword merch to select winnerse.g., mugs, calendars, shirts, etc.
- Give away a trip to New York to tour the Times and meet the crossword crew
- Choose a winner and mail them an iPad with a New York Times case since the Crossword app is so much better on a tablet than a phone or computer
- Give away free Crossword subscriptions to randomly selected superfans who solved the puzzle every day in 2020

Improved Statistics & Coaching
The stats in the Crossword app are as disappointing as the ending to Game of Thrones.
All you can see is total number of puzzles solved, solve rate, current streak, and longest streak, as well as daily, weekly, and total averages.
Im no quant, but there have to be better metrics to share. People want to know if theyre improving, compete with themselves, and learn about their habits.
Heres what Id think about adding:
- Completion rate. Instead of only showing how long it took to complete a puzzle, show what percent of puzzles were correct before having to check or reveal. Thats a more sensitive indicator than solve rate to see if youre improving.
- Frequently missed words. If there are words you keep getting wrong , wouldnt it be nice to know?
- . Add amusing metrics like Hunch Rate , Power Hour , or Category Breakdown . Even though theyre only for shits and giggles, theyll add a ton of delight.
- Brute-force factor. Brute forcing is when you get to the end of a puzzle and theres only one square left so you rapidly punch in letters until the Congratulations! message pops up and delivers your daily dopamine rush. Is it cheating? Questionable. Regardless, hardcore enthusiasts want to know when theyve actually won versus hacking a square.
Why is it important to add stats like completion rate and missed words?

Better Engagement With Friends & Family
The apps ability to interact with friends is pretty much non-existent.
Done well, this could have an exponential effect on user acquisitionespecially when everyone is social distancing and looking to connect remotely.
The Leaderboard does allow you to add connections, but its limited to the Mini and it only shows the current days standings. Theres no history, no scoreboard, and no view over time.
Imagine a Leaderboard that allows you to
- See standings for the full puzzle, not just the Mini
- Compare weekly and monthly times in addition to daily times
- View friends badges & accomplishments
- Opt into a public leaderboard where you can connect with other crossworders in your community or around the world
In addition to a better Leaderboard, imagine messaging friends back and forth or adding people to challenges and taunting them along the way.
Betcha cant get the theme today!
27 down was a tricky mofo!
Tell me 18 across doesnt remind you of Cynthia LOL!!!
Heres where cheering, taunting, and messaging live in Fitbit, for example. Easy peasy.
Skys the limit. The more people engage inside the app instead of having to talk about it elsewhereor worse, not talk about it at allthe more theyll want to add others.

New York Times Cuts Off Third
The New York Timesannounced today that it is cutting off access to its popular crosswords for third-party apps. Previously, the Times made its crosswords available in .puz files in the Across Lite puzzle format. These could be used in a variety of third-party crossword applications.
The announcement was made in a post today by editor Everdeen Mason, who explained that the change will streamline the process for editors. It will make this change starting August 10:
Starting Aug. 10, we will no longer support crossword play on Across Lite. This means we wont provide downloadable .puz files for use on that platform. You can play the NYT crossword on our Crossword App and on desktop and mobile web.
Thank you for supporting our team as we improve and streamline our processes to allow our editors to do what they love best: edit fun puzzles our community submits to us.
As noted by Jason Snell at Six Colors, this change will mean that you will only be able to play Times crosswords on the Times website and in the dedicated New York Times Crossword app for iPhone and iPad. It will also have an impact on users who rely on third-party applications to make the crosswords more accessible.
A sad, sudden announcement from that they will no longer provide puzzles in Across Lite format. This means that it will no longer be possible to solve NYT puzzles using or any other 3rd-party app.

Records And Puzzles Of Note
Fans of the Times crossword have kept track of a number of records and interesting puzzles , including those below.
A few crosswords have achieved recognition beyond the community of crossword solvers. Perhaps the most famous is the November 5, 1996 puzzle by Jeremiah Farrell, published on the day of the U.S. presidential election, which has been featured in the movie Wordplay and the book The Crossword Obsession by Coral Amende, as well as discussed by Peter Jennings on ABC News, featured on CNN, and elsewhere. The two leading candidates that year were Bill Clinton and Bob Dole in Farrell’s puzzle one of the long clue/answer combinations read “Title for 39-Across next year” = MISTER PRESIDENT. The remarkable feature of the puzzle is that 39-Across could be answered either CLINTON or BOB DOLE, and all the Down clues and answers that crossed it would work either way . Constructors have dubbed this type of puzzle a Schrödinger or quantum puzzle after the famous paradox of Schrödinger’s cat, which was both alive and dead at the same time. Since Farrell’s invention of it, nine other constructorsPatrick Merrell, Ethan Friedman, David J. Kahn, Damon J. Gulczynski, Dan Schoenholz, Andrew Reynolds, Kacey Walker and David Quarfoot , and Ben Tausig have made use of a similar trick.
Unlimited Free Tier As Long As The Pandemic Lasts
NYT should offer the Crossword app for free as long as the COVID-19 pandemic lasts.
Beyond being a good acquisition move, its the right thing to doespecially since New York is the hardest-hit city in the world right now. Its a perfect time to say The only thing tougher than our citys crossword is our spirit. Well get through this, New York. In the meantime, heres a gift to make staying at home a little easier.
Alternatively, they could donate the proceeds to fighting Coronavirus in NYC. Anything to get the message across that theyre New York Strong.
Acquisition-wise, the benefit of course is that the Crossword is so addictive most people who try it during the pandemic will turn into long-term subscribers. Its got a short time-to-wow and early aha momentseverything the Reforge model extols.
Ahh, the joys of marketing a product people love.

Cross Words Over New York Times Puzzle Change
The digital version of The New York Times daily crossword puzzle will no longer be available in third-party apps from next week.
Instead the crosswords will only be accessible digitally through the publication’s own website or app.
They have been available in the Across Lite format, which allows anyone with a NYT subscription to download and open them in an app of their choice.
Crossword fans have questioned the move, describing it as “maddening”.
Across Lite is a free program that uses the .puz format, and enables users to create and open the puzzles on a PC or Mac.
The NYT’s Games subscription – which includes the popular crossword – is separate from the newspaper and costs $1.25 a week, or $5 a month.
One of the advantages of subscribing is that users can download any of the crosswords that have featured in the paper since 1993, and the change also applies to this service.
The decision to end support for Across Lite has infuriated some of the publication’s followers.
Crossword champion Dan Freyer claimed on Twitter that he believed the move was nothing more than a “cash grab”.
“This is maddening. This change benefits none of the millions of online #NYTXW solvers who pay an annual subscription for access to the crosswords.”
He continued: “It is a pure cash grab, removing the convenience that has been part of digital crosswords since the mid-’90s.”
Want To Sound More Intelligent Avoid These 15 Words And Phrases That Are ’embarrassingly Outdated’ Say Grammar Experts
As 2021 comes to an end, it’s the perfect time for reflection. And let’s be frank: Many of us wish the people in our lives would reflect on their communication skills. These days, there are some embarrassingly outdated buzzwords and clichés that make everyone want to scream.
Recently, we interviewed managers, recruiters and employees about the words and phrases they think should be retired in 2022 or at least go on a long vacation. Here’s that list, dashed with a healthy amount of our opinions as grammar experts:
If you’re talking about internet usage, go for it. But today, a lot of people use “bandwidth” to refer to human capacities to take on a task and it’s getting tired.
It has officially become a buzzword that your business partners don’t have the bandwidth to keep hearing.
As with “bandwidth,” here’s a computer word that spread to more general use, especially in marketing and advertising. Our main problem with it is that it’s dehumanizing and impersonal. Why not use people-centric words like customer, buyer or client?
Granular first made a major blip on the radar at the beginning of the pandemic. People talked about examining data on the granular level, looking at the smallest bits of information to make important decisions.
That’s legit, but it’s being used so often now that we seem to be avoiding a simpler word: “Detailed.”
5. ‘I did a thing’
Can’t she just say “I made this”?
6. ‘It is what it is’
