Have You Ever Wondered Whether To Buy The City Pass New York Or Had Questions About It Heres Our Complete Guide To Help You Decide

When we think about visiting New York , a lot of times what comes to mind are the big attractions that we definitely dont want to miss. They tend to be the most iconic sights and for people like me, who are looking to visit everything without waiting in long lines there are solutions. In the case of New York City we have the City Pass and, although I had already visited the attractions, I wanted to try out the City Pass to see exactly how it was used and if its really as easy and convenient as they say.

The City Pass is basically a coupon book full of tickets where, for 9 consecutive days , you are able to visit three attractions and then choose three others . For each attraction you choose, you will go up to the ticket desk and hand them your ticket book. They will give you a normal ticket for access to the attraction

Ny Pass Vs Ny Sightseeing Pass

The NY Sightseeing Pass is very similar to the NY Pass in many respects. Like the NY Pass, it is an unlimited scheme, so you can visit as many attractions as you like for the duration of the pass. They also offer discounted child passes for children aged 3-12.

There are some important differences to note:

  • The NY Sightseeing Pass includes over 90 different attractions compared to over 100 with the NY Pass.
  • The NY Sightseeing Pass includes One World Observatory instead of the Empire State Building. To me, this would not be a deciding factor since my favorite observation point is the Top of the Rock, but the Observatory is rapidly becoming one of New Yorks must-dos and I can see why people might prefer this option.
  • For each NY Sightseeing Pass you buy, you get a $40 credit that can be used towards the purchase of select items on CitySightsNY.com/additional-products.html to compliment your NY experience. Options include helicopter rides, other attractions, Broadway packages, day trips to places like Niagara Falls and Washington, D.C. and dinner cruises.
  • All the attractions and special offers available to NY Sightseeing Pass holders are detailed in a 250-page guidebook. The New York Pass comes with a 200-page guidebook.

You could easily spend a half day just walking around the aircraft carrier learning about all things space, sea and air.

Seeing serious action in WWII and the Cold War, collaborating with NASA to serve as recovery for astronauts and various tours in the Vietnam War, Intrepid has certainly had a colorful history.

Traveller #: Calmly See The Most Important Sights

We like to see all of the important attractions in a city, but we dont like to do it in a rush.

We also sometimes enjoy just wandering through the streets and neighborhoods of a city, instead of rushing from one attraction to the next. Just the same, we of course want to see the major highlights.

So we would rather distribute the attractions mentioned above across a longer time period, for example, 5 or 7 days.

For this scenario, weve also created two tables in which we show you which pass is the best solution for you then.

Savings without Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

Note: the Freestyle Pass is always good for only 3 days. We therefore havent included it in these two tables.

With the unhurried options, the savings arent so huge, like with the fully packed 3 day itinerary. The Citypass, the Sightseeing Flex Pass and the Explorer Pass are very close to one another here.

Savings with Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

Note: besides the Freestyle Pass, the Citypass isnt taken into account in this table, since it doesnt include busses or bicycles.

Because the Hop-on-Hop-off-Tours and bike rentals are relatively expensive, the savings are higher again. The Sightseeing Flex Pass or the Explorer Pass are once again the most lucrative here.

With all three passes, you can save between 54 and 88 dollars and can use the Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus for two days. You could, for example, ride through Manhattan one day and along the Brooklyn route on another day.

American Museum Of Natural History $28

NYC – city GO pass 2021 – is it worth the money?

The American Museum of Natural history is an incredible Showcase of the Natural World. Inside this cavernous facility is the complete history of the planets existence. Huge Lifesize Diaroamas depict the current diversity of life on the planet while the Fossil Halls host some of the best Dinosaur Skeletons ever recovered.

The Oceans are brought to life in the Hall of Ocean Life, while Earth sciences are represented in the geology and meteorite halls. There is so much on display and you can spend hours exploring the exhibits. Even Kids will be enthralled with the Giant Dinosaurs that appear in the Fossil Halls. All the Favorites, T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus are all present, there is even a gigantic Titanosaur on Display one of the largest land animals ever to exist.

Plus its the filming location of Night at the Museum!

We really love the Natural History Museum, but it is not everyones idea of a perfect New York Experience. As it is one of the Chosen attractions if the Museum is not floating your boat it might be worth looking at alternative Passes!

As you can see The NEW YORK PASS is a serious outlay. However, there is no doubt that by seeing a good number of the attractions on the Card you can save a serious sum of cash. But the reality is unless you are in New York for a number of days It can be hard to cram in enough attractions to make it worthwhile. The best attractions can take a fair amount of time to visit and you will inevitably spend some time queuing.

These Cards also receive some pretty bad press on some Travel forums. People arguing the cards actually cause more queuing than they save and the actual experience is deteriorated by using a card. So We headed to New York to investigate these claims.

How Much Does The New York City Pass Cost

The New York CityPASS costs $132 for adults, meaning that you pay an average of $22 per attraction. For kids from 6-17, the City Pass costs $108. A CityPASS is likely not worth it for kids younger than 6, as many attractions will be free for them anyway. Because the pass is already heavily discounted, there is no further New York City Pass promo.

One World Observatory $45

We have always been disappointed with the One World Observatory. Yes, its the highest in New York and one of the highest in the world but the fact it is indoors just robs it of a lot of Pizzaz. The views are stunning but just ruined a little by all that glass.

Which one to choose? With the New York Pass, there is no need to choose, they are all available on the Pass. They are all also very quick attractions. 1-2 Hours is all it takes to visit the rooftops of Americas tallest buildings.

We suggest doing all 4 if possible but alter your timings so you get nighttime views, Daytime views, and if possible a Sunset too! The One World Observatory fits perfectly in with your downtown day!

The Best New York Pass For First

Especially if you are in New York for the first time and want to see as many of the attractions and sights as possible, the day-based passes are a good idea. Here are my favorites the Sightseeing Pass NYC and the New York Pass.

They are quite similar and you will not go wrong with either one. The good thing about these sightseeing passes is that you can see as many attractions as you want or can manage!

Keep in mind that this is one of the either/or options on the New York CityPASS.

Difference #: Counting Time Or Attractions

Are NYC Attraction Passes Worth It ? More Questions Answered !

To start with, there are two types of New York passes:

  • Passes that are valid for a specific amount of time. In this time, you can visit all of the attractions included in the pass.
  • Passes that are only good for a certain number of attractions.
  • Both types of passes have their advantages and disadvantages. You can see which pass works by which model in this summary:

    Time-based passes:

    • New York Pass
    • New York Sightseeing Pass

    Attraction-based passes:

    • New York Sightseeing Flex Pass
    • New York Explorer Pass
    • New York Citypass
    • Freestyle Pass

The time based passes are especially worth it if you want to see as many attractions as possible. The longer the validity of the pass, the cheaper it becomes per day.

Besides that, these passes are a good choice if the additional offers, such as bike rentals, city tours or boat rides, are important to you. In these cases, you usually get away cheaper with a time based pass.

Is It Worth The Money To Buy A City Pass

I would honestly say, Yes. If you like the attractions that are included, you will save time and money, and since you have 9 days, you have time to visit all the attractions. Also, if you contact us, we can help you organize your trip according to what youd like to see and well even send you a plan with our suggestions on how to organize your time over the days youll spend in New York including the attractions offered in the City Pass.

Traveller #: As Much As Possible

Are you one of the travelers who wants to see as much as possible in New York? Then the time based New York Passes are interesting for you.

A typical itinerary could look like this:

Empire State Building Top of the Rock One World Observatory Metropolitan Museum of Art MoMA Museum of Natural History Bicycle rentals in Central Park Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus tour Boat ride, for example with Circle Line 2 further attractions according to your interests 2 guided tours Total price: $490

In total, thats 15 attractions, which you can manage well over 7 days. For all of that, youd have to spend around 500 dollars for individual tickets.

In the following table, you can see how much youd save with one of the New York Passes.

Note: the New York Citypass and the Freestyle Pass arent made for this type of travel, since they both only include relatively few attractions. Weve therefore not included them in this table.

If you want to see a ton of attractions in New York and also have some time for that , then the New York Pass is the best option for you.

The savings with the New York Sightseeing Pass is only a little lower, so its worth taking a look at the included attractions. Your own itinerary will probably look a little different than our example itinerary.
